I would have to say hello Great Scott after watching your demonstration of Hultafors 1.5kg felling axe, your filing definitely is a plus, l agree totally on your points about the handle, l have just ordered the axe from the Netherlands €100 all told, l intend using it primarily to drive plastic felling wedges while felling trees with a chainsaw ( l am a climbing arborist ) in viewing the power and speed you generated with that 1.5 kg axe , l knew this is going to work for me, l was a little anxious it may be too light, l don’t want to lug around a Seven pound sledgehammer, looking forward to my forestry ax, so thanks again for the help, confirmation, greetings from Ireland, stay safe always !!!
Same axe as wetterlings, except the top of theaxe is not glued andsealed with glue 1/4" inside the axe head made by hults bruk and the handlegrain is perfect. Can get for £34. Brilliant axe!
Only 40? Sounds cheaper than it costs now!! I finally found it in stock, after years of searching around, and it's the only time I don't have enough money to get it! I'm sure it will be out of stock, when I raise the money they ask for. Happy new Year Ben!!!
Hi Ben. I’ve stumbled on your channel while researching for an axe to buy and got hooked on your videos. I’m currently on a verge of buying my first axe, and I’m considering two, the hultafors hy 10- 1.5 sv and the ochsenkopf universal gold 1600gr. They cost roughly the same and I need to cut down and limb medium size trees and split wood. Can you help me choose? I’ve seen your good reviews on both brands. Thanks a lot! Best regards
Love all the vids you put out. Is this axe the same as the Hults Bruk Atran ? I see the price at $130 usd, which seems quite a bit more than you mentioned. If it is the same , would you say its worth the cost?
We have virtually no Beech here in Wisconsin, at least not wild. Apparently it makes decent handles as the Basque use it. It looks to be pretty dense. How does it compare to European Ash and American Hickory? I thin handles to just under 3/4" for light axes and just over 3/4" for 3# abd up. My glove size is "large."
I can't decide between this one and the 1.2 kg version of the same axe on a 28" handle. Which one would you recommend for an all around chopping felling splitting limbing for the wooded backward and requires always a lot of cleaning up.
Just picked one of these axes up for about 130$ Canadian which is not terrible considering the gransfors version selling for 270$. A bit tough to get my hands on one here. Did some filing to reach a similar angle but don't have a gauge. Should the file be flush with the face for my primary angle? I think im close but don't want to take too much off. Thanks for all your great videos!
@@benscottwoodchopper thank-you! I'm probably at about 18 degrees now so I'll see how it cuts. Also, how do you like to shape your pommels? I put more curve in it but seems like its giving my hand some cramping... Do you have a video on handle shaping?
@@Sk8ter-Dad i prefer the style seen on racing axes, might do a video on it in the future. Really though you just need to find what is comforta ble and works for you
@@benscottwoodchopper yea sounds good. I find the curve great for splitting but uncomfortable for felling or limbing. Thanks a ton, from the great white north, eh!
@@Sk8ter-Dad The Hultafors HY 1.5 can both chop and split. If you pair it with a slightly smaller Forest axe, with a thin edge, that can chop and limb a tree, you have all your bases covered! The Hultafors will be able to fell bigger trees and buck the tree into logs, and the smaller axe will be the one to delimb or cut fell the smaller trees. I'm trying for years, to get the Hultafors you own!! It's only once I found it in stock in a shop, but I don't have the money to order it. I'm sure, when I raise the money to get it, it will be out of stock again.. You're lucky, enjoy it! Happy New Year!!!
I got one of these earlier this year as I wanted something between the Arvika and a boys axe and it was the worst put together axe I've ever bought, as well as the work you have to do as standard on a new axe the head was wonky and the handle was bent sideways. So I rehung it, steamed the handle straight and all the rest and its... Ok. Cutting some knotty softwood left a bit of the edge in the cut so I reground it slightly more obtuse and took out some of the extreme curve in the edge and its back to ok but I more often reach for a Boys axe or Arvika 😂
@@benscottwoodchopper tbf I don't hate it and I still think it's a good option. I did make it really thin and and a softer hatchet folded up in the same knot. I forgave it
@@benscottwoodchopper I'd say it's more than good enough for 99% of people. A lot of that 99% would put a fat, polished convex on it and be happy with their 'razor sharp' edge for occasional stick chopping or splitting. You're right tho: if you want a 3.5 ish lb axe there's not a lot to choose from
@@rogerharvey9863 yeah its that or the council tool jersey, whick is flat ckeeked sticky af and doesnt pop chips for shit. Best use for yhem is to send them to owen to mod them into 2.5lb kent fellers

The hultafors 1.5 is slightly better but both need thinned
@@benscottwoodchopper Great! Thanks for your help. I already ordered the hultafors and bought a couple of files to thin those cheeks!

Its the same axe, just rougher finish made for hultafors. 130 is high for it, go for a council tool 32"
Getting really good bite from that axe, nice work!
yeah its working great, especially when you consider that beech is harder than most oaks!

Much denser than ash but shorter fibres, it works very good

1.2kg is better for 10" diameter and smaller chopping, 1.5 32" is better for 12" or more trees

i file as flat a possible, play around with the angle till it cuts the best without taking damage

Nice. Just nabbed a good as new Basque axe for 45 quid on ebay.
lucky bugger!
It (you) made short work of that wood Ben.
Its working so well because of the grind, i might try making it even thinner

Yeah starting to think german steel is far superior to swedish, some of these seem to chip up bad. Arvikas are known to do the same

What sheath would you recommend for this axe, the one I ordered did not come with one.
Thanks in advance.
I don't know of any you can buy pre made, making your own isnt too hard though
Please, where I can get that template (is that the name?) to take measurement of the angle of the bevel that are you using?
called veritas angle gauge, see whats the best price
