- I need to get a set of heavy dray wheels repaired, but a wreck interrupted my plans. A movie is being filmed the next day after the wreck broke a swing tongue, so the rush is on to meet their schedule. Building and restoring horse drawn vehicles often involves adapting to the most urgent need of the day. Thanks for following along!

And the Oscar for Best Fabricator of a Vintage Wagon Part goes to Dave Engels!
Lol
The producer must have known the only place in the world that could produce this kind of work. And could turn it around overnight!
The show must (and can) go on!
Mr. Engels, your skills are exemplary. My wife and I thoroughly enjoy your videos. The fact that the movie company knew who to come to for such a masterful repair tells me that your reputation precedes you. What a fine job!
fancy bending there Dave, you are a cagey feller. Nice work. Keep smilin
It always amazes me how you get the irons first time. That rod bend right around to the width of the tongue, while heating and then it actually fits!!!. Truly you are a master of "Art To Part". Amazing video and work Dave!
*- It is so wonderful seeing you by hand's experience shape a perfect hitch point so quickly, Dave.*
When I saw this part at 13:13 my thought was "but where it's gonna fit, and how?" And then I watched the bending process, and thought "wow". That takes some skill to do it that way, and get it right... I mean, a LOT of it.
That was a really swell bend you pulled there. Years of experience say their word. Nice!
Loved that double U bend in the vice, I was scratching my head till the end and there it was!
Always fun to watch your videos. Even when it's one of those panicsville style quick jobs. I did smile at how you took the time to "clock" every nut square to the irons. It might be a rush job but no one is going to rush you by THAT much, eh? 😀
And a note to your video editor. These videos are always a great blend of talking and action. The pacing and proportioning between explanation/story and the sped up but not too fast action is really close to perfection. This is a big part of why the Engel's videos are so enjoyable. A big pat on the back to whoever is doing the editing and set the pacing.
His wife does them.😊
@@danaowen9014 They make a good team for sure.
If I recall correctly, her name is Diane, and yes I concur it is always an excellent production! 👋🤠 Howdy from Texas!
Her editing is without a doubt very professional. Thanks for pointing that out.
Actually Dave does it all. For some reason people have given me credit for it.
What a wonderful video it is a joy to see the precision of all of your work and endeavors. Thank you for sharing.
That hand-bending was insane. Thank you for sharing that.
The absolute best channel on UA-cam bar none!!!! As always, thank you for sharing your life and times with us, God Bless America and God Bless people like you.
Where else in the world does a coach shop get so much walk-in business? Cracks me up.
Wondering what in the world were you doing welding heating bending. and then a master peace appears, Awesome Sir
Watching you form the iron that was missing from the end makes me wonder, "How many people would know they could do that?" Then I realized that's only a minor part of it because "How many people would know HOW to do that?" You welded a straight round rod into holes you drilled into a piece of flat iron. What you did next was unquestionably a work of art as you put a precise bend in the round rod. That blew me away. Your near infinite talents in working with wood and iron never cease to amaze!
Watching the way you freehand made those bends with the torch was a an absolute joy , albeit just a hitch, you put as much skill and precision into building it up as you do any wheel or entire mud wagon.
Whilst you may find this work mundane us puriststs apreciate watching you perhorm these tasks.
Thank you fot sharing
that freehand eyeballing bending is awesome !!
Years on the job really have calibrated those eyeballs!
Great job Dave, dropping whats going on and doing something and getting on another job is the way this country got going years ago.
Outstanding work on that repair work. Hopefully the production company made it worth your while.
Thanks for sharing your ease of reacting to what Life gives you. It's going to be good for the movie crew and a spare to boot.
Mr. Engels, like most have already said, you continue to amaze me with your craftmanship and the ease at which you display with your work. I always look forward to Every video you produce and post. Your narration is calm and relaxing as well. Keep up the great work and thanks for including us on your journeys.
One of those videos you know where they start, but the end is a surprise.
Cool 👏
Another good one for the books, in and out with a spare to boot, that's good service. I enjoy watching all your videos but the iron work is especially intriguing, thanks Dave.
Watching him bend that rod with the oxy torch was literally mind bending. Pure wizardry.
You are the carpenter and mechanic that I aspire to be
Always educational and entertaining, sir.
I hope you get your name in the credits for fixing that swing tongue ASAP! Like they say "Expect the Unexpected" Thanks Dave 👍
I hope so, too, but I ain't holdin' my breath.
It was Yellowstone wasn’t it?
Theoretically could be "Rust" as they relocated the filming to Montana. Im not sure if id be happy having my name in the credits for that movie.
It's hard to turn a person down that's in need,THANKS for all you do🤗😎🤗😎
Just another masterclass day in the life of a true craftsman ..brilliant ! Thank you for sharing .
I went to the local museum the other day,, they have a wagon there that has 2 seats and both of them have the curved irons so they can be moved,, also the supports are pretty much like yours,,, curved, Had never paid much attention before watching your mud wagon vidio,, Thanks
How nice that you made them that blank. Very interesting about the boxings that did not fit properly.
Lucky for them that you were available to make the repair. Great job and video. Thanks.
"the show must go on" nice work!
That bend was super slick! Impressive. ✌🏻❤️🇺🇸
Great Job Dave, saved their bacon again!! Fantastic work well done. Thanks for sharing with us . And now the rest of the video on the axle and wheel save. Looking forward to how you do it. Stay safe and keep up the fun. Fred.
OMG, sir! how I love watching you make, fix, Wheels... its pure joy!
Ok, I have one complaint.. it was only 17mins :)
A true old-world craftsman taking care of his customers!
Magic!
Talent like you wouldn’t believe. This channel rates up there with the best of them. Where I am from wagons are a thing of the pass however the technical aspect of putting these wagons together is mind blowing.
This channel IS the best of them!!!
Head 'em off at the pass?
Amazing craftsmanship and attention to detail thank you
always a pleasure to look at you
Always enjoy being invited into your shop, great video
Good Evening Dave and Diane, lovely bit of ironwork made up. I know your sick of ghem, but nice to see some wheels might be on the books. Glad to see you have the same type of days I do.
Regards Richard 🇬🇧
Thank you For all the teaching to Us
beautiful, Dave-does-it-again!
Gotta love those old steel enameled refrigerator crisper bins. I keep several on hand for much the same as solvent pan/oil pans.
Your work is smooth and flowing and amazingly accurate.
Even with the hot wrench you are an artist. Great work Dave.
Always a pleasure to watch you work!
Hi friends enjoyed the video have a day love from TEXAS
Once again thanks for the video.
You make it all look so easy. It’s not for a long time.
Had to laugh realizing your the only person I have ever seen actually using bolt cutters to cut bolts🤣 God Bless you and your family. I really enjoy your content.🇺🇸
I love the bolt cutter trick! Gonna have to try that next time.
Love the grain on the tongue blanks. Thats some beautiful wood
Howdy from Sacramento! The work you do is fascinating and your workmanship unparalleled. Thank you for sharing!
" If you want something done, give it to a busy man. "
Incredible ... and you make it look so easy. Fabulous metal working and welding.
To be interrupted to do more urgent work means that your services are highly sought after and, with any luck, highly respected.
Wow, that is some nice metalwork.
Thanks Dave
Very good
You know, some day, out of the blue, he's going to casually bake and decorate a huge elaborate wedding cake from scratch, and he'll bake it atop his wood stove. And I for one won't be the slightest bit surprised when it happens. Is there no limit to this man's talents?
Nice work Dave. Stay safe
That was some impressive metal bending 👍🏻
Most interesting as always, Mr. Engle.
You truly amaze me ! Thank you and God Bless !
Interesting you mention movies. Anything I watch now from the 'West' i'm there looking at the wheels and cart. 1883 was particularly good in that respect!!
Thanks for sharing 👍
This is pretty interesting
we need this type of video
I wish I lived closer. I would come in and work for you just to work on some wheels and learn how. I’ve always wanted to learn how to repair them. I used to work at an outdoor theatre and we had several wagons that always needed repair. It would have been nice to know how to repair them.
Another nice job.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Fascinating metal working.
That was some ASMR stuff right there.
Nicely done! Thanks for the video.
Fantastic. The skills that Dave has, and demonstrates so well, are truly awesome. What on earth will the good people of Joliet do when he finally retires? Thanks as always Dave.
It is always fun to watch a master craftsman do his job. How effortlessly you bent those rods into those attachments!!!
Another great "Spur of the Moment job" I held my breath on those two 180 deg bends, kept waiting for "The split" that thankfully never came. and I can breathe again!. Thanks for sharing. ECF
Well done Dave!
thanks for sharing
Good Video David. I love to hear the metal ring.

your work is truly "KAMI-WAZA"
Very good show.
Ur work is amasing. Thank you for showin it to all of us
Amazing work.
Skills, skills and more skills! Dave, you're amazing!
Yet again Dave, an exemplar of a skilled craftsman delivering the goods to a customer who needs it yesterday.
Well Done
here again, yay! 15:50 piece is genius.
I really enjoy the bending of the metal round bar there. Awesome.
Another good one Dave
I really enjoy your videos on all the details of old wagons. It's so interesting to learn about how things were done before electricity. Again thanks for sharing 👍.
Masterful !!!
I hope movie emergencies pay double!!!! I always like watching you make wheels and hubs.
Stay safe and we'll see you next time.
Dave , WHAT ! that was amazing to see, how you made that metal end by heating up and curling it around, Fantastic job .
Well done again!
Respekt Meister ❤ Bravo
