Good tip “burning” the carpets.
A tip on fitting Velcro: When you have decided where to position your Velcro, either on the carpet or the car, stick the opposite Velcro to the one you just glued on and take the backing off. Then carefully fit the carpet in the desired position and your Velcro strips will line up 100%.
Correct
Great idea!
Glad you think so!
Another tip for installing carpet: use a hot soldering iron for making the bolt holes
I use an awl and heat it up - saves buggering the tip if the iron - works well for roof linings too
Carpets are great for retaining small particles of muddy water. And what a wonderful smell it produces.
It's just a Land Rover thing. Cheers King Mike. 🥃
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for this mike, I’m seriously considering binning all the puma carpets and re doing as it’s as thin as an extinction rebellions manifesto.
Rubber mats are the way forward for me in the footwells.
Cheers.,😉👍🏻
Go for it!
I can actually use this idea right now! Sweet! Already using the Velcro on the drivers side.
Lot better than contact glue for the front carpets where they need to come out
I was half expecting you to say you had painted the carpet to match lol.
Tempted..
You can buy what's called a bucket trowel. Which is made in that shape used for plastering
Just cut out loads of half inch squares and stick them on in a mosaic. Worked for the Romans.
Good tips Mike…I found that out about the trowel recently building a porch, I cut the end down, was a lot easier to use….Velcro tends to be pricey so I’d probably just use spray adhesive or find another method to keep them in, if I were doing it.
I’d like a Defender, but the wife prefers the relative luxury of the Discovery Sport I have!!
Velcro was $11 and did both sides - not too expensive
Mike, the Wright Offroad matting system is well worth it - problem is I guess the shipping to your parts would be prohibitively expensive. And IIRC it's only for the front (seat box & forwards). Love your approach to the carpet though! You could always dye the too light stuff you have no?
I know that matting - very expensive to ship - heavy!
Exmoor trim in the UK does nice Carpets
Yes pricey and the shipping is very expensive to Canada
@@BritannicaRestorations Plus 8 weeks minimum waiting time. Just got mine this week for my 130 crew cab, another job for the list 😂
Us older landrover owners don't bother with fitted carpets. I pick up some carpet samples (stiched all around) usuallly cost me about £1 each. Not too bothered on the colour.
Good to know!
I bought a shaped rubber mat for the tunnel for about £60-£80. It was a terrible fit! Sent it back.
I think it was you who told me about that - was really stiff and not rubber?
@@BritannicaRestorationsIt was me come to think of it!
Contact adhesive! Mines been on for nearly twenty years now…
Hi Mike.
Have you tried to form the LR carpet with the heat gun?
Just give it a bit of a warm up, bend it to shape as you glue it.
I've seen it done on carpeting stairs...
Just a tought.
Tata
Yes it melts this type of carpet - problem is you cannot heat it from the pile side as you just have to turn the gun on and the pile melts!
Other side is equally difficult = I did have a modicum of success with the steam cleaner - but you cannot glue at the same time! ( and it gets messy!)
@@BritannicaRestorations Right.
Also the carpeting that I saw being applied with the heat gun was a bit different of the automotive one.
I fitted a set of foam backed rubber mats from Exmoor trim in my CSW. They helped a great deal with noise and have been really good at dealing with the mud. They have a checker plate pattern and look really good. I have all the carpets stored in case I ever want to turn it back in to a townies car. A quick question if any knows the answer. Do you leave the pump lever up or down on the 300Tdi lift pump? I have a dim recollection of it mattering but can’t remember which way. Mines leaking so it’s going to be replace anyway but would love to know if it actually matters.
Pump lever up!
could you not put the carpet into your mould for the middle tunnel get it hot them offer up the one you made sandwitch it in as i am sure your torch would get them warm just a thought,my front mats are all in one piece transmission and floor mats all joined together
I discussed this with my Fibreglass man - we could make a second mould by laying 1/4 inch sheet wax in the original female mould and then take another cover copy - this will give a gap for the carpet and we can use steam to form the carpet as this dries super quick
A lot of work for one mat - but it could be done - maybe a winter project when we are not so busy?
@@BritannicaRestorations yup could be another project
Just saw the carpet is genuine only and £100 each only from LR if there is stock
Mike. Where's the 'Krown' rust proofing ? "Manuel from Malaga" is looking smart. Might have to drink up mid-week sir ! V.
Coming soon!
Carpet in a LandRover??? Mike, I was thinking exactly the same thing...
A pointless tool, that has a point.
I can see this video....
Could you dye the carpets?
Tricky...
Mike, i m from malaysia, may i seek for ur professional advise my defender is bare unit, i planned to apply the carpet before that need to apply the sound deadening layer. I m in doubt after installed the sound deadening Butyl Based Construction(3mm), do i still need to stick a layer of EVA closed foam (5mm)? Then follow by mass loaded vinyl layer (2mm). After this only apply carpet underlay then the carpet. May i know can i apply as the above method? Thanks Mike
When I did my last Defender I used the Kilmat butyl pads and then the 5mm EVA foam on top - made a difference to the drive as 5mm foam cuts another frequency of sound. I didn't put any underlay, just rot proof carpet on the top
@@BritannicaRestorations thanks for ur prompt reply Mike, if in this case can the EVA closed cell foam last? And the carpet required to stick permanently on the EVA closed cell foam? Thanks
Mine seemed to stick OK - and the backing on my carpet was very rough
@@BritannicaRestorations Mike thanks for ur precise advice. Like to watch all ur video especially ur details explanation. Easy to understand. Thanks a lot
Hey Mike... how about a workshop tour?
I did one a few years back
@@BritannicaRestorations cheers mate, I'll have a look for it.
Carpet in a Land Rover...whatever next....
I think Velcro is a rip off
I'll get your coat..
Lol!!
@@BritannicaRestorations Thanks...... do you think Exit Signs are on the way out?
lol!
