- Singapore's employment growth slowed in the first quarter of this year, according to the Manpower Ministry's latest labour report. Total employment grew by 4,900 in the first three months of this year, while unemployment also ticked up slightly to 2.1 per cent in March. Meanwhile, retrenchments in Singapore fell for the second straight quarter, with 3,000 people laid off from January to March this year. The Manpower Ministry said business restructuring remains the top reason for companies axing staff. Nicolas Ng and Richa Mathew report.
Workers’ Party is advocating for more government support for SMEs in various areas, including talent acquisition, international expansion, rental assistance, and more accessible grant applications. The party proposes that such support could alleviate the non-wage costs of doing business, allowing SMEs to continue driving innovation and employment.
Its getting worst as more companies exit Singapore due to high operating cost !!!
There will also be other companies coming here
Progress Singapore Party’s Secretary General Hazel Poa calls for a living wage, more support for the unemployed, and enhanced work-life balance in her Labour Day message, urging immediate government action to support Singapore’s workers.
PSP:We are committed to creating a prosperous, fairer, and more equal society where work-life harmony is key,” Ms Poa concluded, highlighting the party’s ongoing efforts to support Singaporeans in adapting to today’s fast-paced environment.
WP has called for better protections such as a Redundancy Insurance Scheme
Workers’ Party Secretary-General Pritam Singh in his May Day statement highlights economic uncertainties and the party’s commitment in advocating for more government support for SMEs and worker protections.
Hazel Poa reaffirmed PSP’s dedication to advocating for workers’ rights and welfare across Singapore. The message emphasized the necessity of compassion in economic progress and the government’s role in safeguarding workers’ interests.
Singapore faces its own set of challenges, characterized by slow economic growth coupled with high inflation. Mr Singh noted that this scenario has left many Singaporeans grappling with employment concerns and the rising costs of living and doing business.
Ya lah becos the construction workers hv switch their jobs to grocery n parcels delivery!!!.
Sometimes i wonder r those work permits given one time without any reviews n checks??y r they allowed to do lalmove jobs n grabfood??
a scheme which the People’s Action Party has previously rejected and ridiculed-and improved skills transfer from foreign professionals to Singaporeans.
If we learn to say, "aiya, this one is the bo bian one leh", then we will just lan lan accept
We must believe the statistics. Even if we cannot audit it. Together we come together
Hustle corner or if cars can put like a job of carwash such thing will be nice "collect cleaning tools at ..."(Issit desperate)? Was thinking each carpark to have a box to request wash, it's $70-$150 per vehicle is fun easy money. Wonder how this spread will happen, a sudden ruling-movement from jealousy or not?
Giving one time work permit without any checks frm MOM is y we see tis trend happening rite now..look at most of the vans they drive to deliver grocery..they make the vans look like trash n its scary to park beside them even if theres empty lots available..
We wanna know who gave them the right to work in tis industry,MOM must be sleeping!!
Bravo to Singapore, still acheive the lowest unempoyment among Asean countries.
Now, even the private sector is pissed with PAP. PAP government is making it increasingly difficult for business with more crippling labor policies and taxes. I applaud Yahoo and Ninjavan for taking punitive measures to have their retrenchment exercises just before Labour Day in order to embarrass NTUC and PAP. I urge all business unions to join forces and lobby against the PAP. Campaign for more win win policies by supporting opposition parties.
But reality is what you painted is just a minority situation. Majority are happy. To they, got food to eat, bed to sleep they can already. Happy already. Politics? Nah, they no interested.
There’s nothing crippling about labour policies! They are there to PROTECT workers from exploitation by powerful employers.
Its ok... we have cdc vouchers.
