Mike Patey’s undeniable passion, exceptional drive, and work ethic (Back to Work) have led to him designing and building some of the most unique and incredible aircraft - while his infectious enthusiasm has inspired thousands of people to enjoy RC and full-scale aviation along the way! Starting with a Wilga 2000 and replacing its Lycoming O-540 piston engine with a Pratt & Whitney PT6A-28 turboprop boasting about twice the power at half the weight, then many additional modifications later, Mike proudly unveiled his “ultimate bush plane.” It could go to the same places as a Carbon Cub but climb twice as fast, reach altitudes up to 28,000 feet, and cruise cross-country at 180 MPH while carrying four people plus gear. Changes from the Wilga were so extensive that the FAA approved Mike’s redesign as an experimental exhibition aircraft. The E-flite DRACO 2.0m was equally unique and astounding, and since its release, it’s become one of the best-selling RC aircraft ever! But many pilots have asked for a smaller version that’s more convenient, easier to fly, and most importantly - is more affordable too. The Micro DRACO 800mm delivers in every way to offer the most practical and fun to fly replica for intermediate to experienced pilots yet! More info about Mike Patey: Mike Patey was born in Gresham, Oregon along with his twin brother Mark, numbers 5 and 6 in an 11 child family. Growing up in a low-income family, they were 15 when they launched their first business together, Deck-It, building decks for their neighbors in Orem, Utah. Before they graduated high school they had built it into a company with nearly 200 employees. Their hard work and drive led them to create additional businesses, successfully building and selling each one. Today, both continue applying their passion for work to their own businesses, Mark with Best Tugs, and Mike with EcoVap. Mike is married to his wife Chandra and they have four children. Mike’s aviation journey began in a 1971 Cessna 172L in 2002 when both Mike and Mark had independently decided to pursue aviation. In a strange “twin moment”, on the same day both had attended airshows in different states and been inspired to pursue their pilot’s license without the other knowing. When they shared their decision by phone, they were so blown away at the coincidence of the whole thing that Mark immediately bought a used 172, and the rest is history. Mike continues his passion of flying and aviation while balancing family, work, and community. “Our parents taught us that if you are blessed with a talent or finances you must give to others or you don’t deserve it in the first place. We were raised dirt poor but our parents gave anything we had in excess to someone who had less than us.” Mike continues to give his time, talents, and energy to search and rescue missions for local law enforcement, as well as building the aviation community through his UA-cam channel where he shares his passion. He is incredibly giving of his time and knowledge as well, often taking time away from his builds for visitors though he really just wants to get “back to work”, a phrase that has become a tagline for his channel. “Back to Work means to get after something. I use it for my life in general. It means give your all, enjoy the process, and work hard.” A mantra Mike truly lives by. Mike holds multiple world speed records and has plans to break those records again. From drag cars to hill climbs to airplanes, Mike has always been driven to race things. He likes to build bigger, stronger, and faster aircraft, innovating new ideas and making them realities in his builds. Mike’s enthusiasm is infectious, often seen chatting with fellow aviators and giggling over new ideas or theories to improve designs, he is a huge asset to general aviation and has inspired many to pursue their dreams of flight by earning their private pilot’s license. For those who might not see this response to some of the related comments here: There is no industry standard when it comes to how terms like ultra micro, micro, mini, etc. are applied to various models. This model is larger, has more features AND more performance than UMX models....which is why we call it "Micro" and not "Ultra Micro". We believe micro models are larger than ultra micro models, yet should still be under the 250 gram weight limit set by the FAA and other organizations (which this one is). And "mini" models are larger/heavier than that: Ultra Micro < Micro < Mini Also, this model is fully factory assembled...the wing installs in seconds with one screw to make the box smaller (which reduces the amount of material used/potential waste, shipping costs, and to make it even easier to store/transport). We've done the same (made the wing removable) with the recently released UMX Conscendo (ua-cam.com/video/9Pj_XjNpODo/v-deo.htmlsi=345cxZ4gtXQjM9qh ), and will do that with more ultra micro and micro models in the future. But they will still be fully factory assembled otherwise!
Draco cant wait to see the build, engineering, and performance . Back to work! 2024 will be a great inspiring innovative year for avaiation thnks to Mike Patey.
I love the easter egg of the tail of the actual Draco X in the background at the start of the video. Thank you my heart needed that I miss the airplane building!
Congrats Mike and HH! I clicked that buy button as soon as I could this morning. I also have a feeling I will be watching this video back a bunch while I wait for my UMX Draco to join the Big Draco in the hangar 👊🏻💥👊🏻
Nice !!! I placed my order this morning for Combo kit and some extra batteries as this one is for my wife to fly with ! This one will be much easier to transport to the field over my 2.0.
It's a bit larger, has a few more features, more power and capabilities overall...so anyone who loves the UMX Turbo Timber Evolution (and most people do!) will love this one too :)
10 year old me would have stars in his eyes seeing how far HH would come with some LEGENDARY collaborations and releases. Truly incredible work from Team Horizon! I love everything yall are doing, keep it up!
Mike, I just wanted to thank you, for allowing us to enjoy your EPIC Build!! I watched HOURS of your video's Building 'this part' then remaking the same part, Better Still Such dedication to your field! The 2.0 was just to big for me... NOW we get the Micro... Next payday, its mine, I'm sooo Excited!!
Mike’s reaction is priceless! Awesome video. Can’t wait to get my Baby Draco. Draco X?!? Awesome. I’ve gotta see that. Thanks Mike! And thanks HH/Eflight!!

Everytime see Mike happy it makes me realize I chose the right field in Aviation. Even though it's very stressful at times moments like these have a way of making you feel 12 years old again.
Great looking plane! I'll pick one up. Curious why EPS is the foam type rather than something more durable such as EPO. The parts break and dent so easily. Is it due to weight constraints? I can tell it's going to fly like a dream! I just need to not let me kids fly it hah.
Here's our response to a similar comment/question on another video: "Because EPO and EPP are heavier, not as stiff AND you cannot mold in all the rivets, panel lines or other surface details at this size/scale like you can with EPS! This model would have FAR less detail, would be heavier AND not fly as well if it was EPO or EPP. And because it's so light, due to the EPS foam, it's still very durable if you crash! We will use EPO and EPP for ultra micro and micro class models when scale details and/or lighter weight matter less than durability (that's why the UMX Ultrix is EPP and the ultra micro Apprentice STOL S is EPO, yet all of our similar class scale and high-performance models are EPS)."
As an indian , I also wish to get these planes , but we don't have horizon hobbies here , and if I import something , a $200 product Costs us $700 due to customs and shipping. We're left out . And those of the present indigenous hobby centers went bancrupt
If you guys can get horizon hobby to do a Scrappy build I think that would be the best looking R/C STOL plane. And preferably a large scale like the Draco
I got mine on way I’m in uk and it’s ment to be in 16th march so I’ve not got to long to wait I got 4s battery coming with it and I’ve picked up a couple of 3s batteries already in anticipation of it getting delivered to me , I would love the big one maybe if I win the lotto but this one will certainly do till the lotto win drops lol 😂
This has to be the hottest micro of 2024. It flies like a bush plane but can still do crazy aerobatics on 3s. I bet it could be hovered on 3s. So sick! I need this! As much as I love Draco I would love to see Scrappy and Turbulence made into micros too. Those two planes are my dream planes.
Still waiting for mine in uk 🇬🇧 was told 16 march but now saying April 6th expected supplier stock due I ordered it on 15th feb I paid for it straight away so hopefully mine will get sent out straight away as I didn’t pre order hurry up draco lol
Can anyone help with regards to if I can operate this with the Spektrum DX6e? I'd rather not have to spend the extra money for an NX6 if I dont need to. I'm just getting into planes and am wanting to get a Conscendo 1.5m glider and this 800mm Draco and hopefully a DX6e will happily fly them both. Any advice would be gratefully received 👍
The NX6 has a 7th channel that can be very useful for more complex models that have flaps plus retracts and the option for SAFE Select as well as thrust reversing. The DX6e will work great for the Conscendo Evolution 1.5m and the Micro DRACO 800mm so you don't "need" the NX6 to fly them, but you may come up short on channels for larger and/or more complex models in the future...especially if you plan to use SAFE Select. The NX6 has a nicer feeling case with rubber grips, a rechargeable battery, WiFi for easier firmware updates, a USB port so you can connect it to a computer to use it with RealFlight, and other features over the DX6e that make it more expensive but also a better option for many people because they won't outgrow it (a lot of people outgrow the DX6e and end up having to spend more by buying an NX6 or NX8 after).
@HorizonHobbyProducts ... thanks so much for the quick response. I did know about the extra features on the NX6 but unfortunately my home is so full of your cars (😀), I'll only have room for 2 planes, so I don't plan on getting anything beyond a glider (the conscendo) and a general purpose plane (the 800mm Draco). Just to check... are you saying I won't have the option of beginner mode if I get the DX6e? My local model shop offers both of these planes with the far cheaper DXS, so surely the twice as expensive DX6e would let me fly these 2 planes in Safe mode?
Is it easy to fly for beginners who have some experience flying RC? I've Flown Slow Stick, Flying Wing & BNF Small Collective Pitched Helicopters... It's been maybe 10 yrs since Touched RC... This looks like easy plane to fly... Can it be launched by hand as opposed to taking off from ground?
Yes, it can be hand launched easily! And based on your experience you will likely have no issues flying it. Here is what we say officially about the skill level for Micro DRACO: Skill Level 2 - Some Experience Required Skill Level 2 aircraft, like this one, are suitable for RC pilots with some experience and the skills to assemble and/or set up and fly similar class models. Although this is the easiest to fly DRACO model yet, it's not a suitable first-ever RC aircraft for new pilots or a “next step after a trainer” model for low-time RC pilots. You should have the experience and skills necessary to successfully fly higher performance ultra-micro models like the various UMX Timber models or larger models like the Slow Ultra Stick 1.2m, Valiant 1.3m, Turbo Timber Evolution 1.5m, or other similar class models before attempting to fly the Micro DRACO. Are you new to flying RC (Radio Controlled) aircraft? If you are, Micro DRACO is not a suitable first-ever RC model, and we recommend learning to fly with one of our purpose-built trainer aircraft, such as the HobbyZone Carbon Cub S 2 1.3m. Based on the Carbon Cub Mike's wife, Chandra Patey, used to fly, it's equipped with exclusive and innovative SAFE technology that makes it possible for almost anyone to learn to fly successfully! The Ready-To-Fly (RTF) Basic version includes nearly everything needed to fly (except for a compatible LiPo battery and charger that are sold separately or together in a money-saving Powerstage bundle) and is a perfect choice if you're a new RC pilot.
so absolutely no info on the bigger version there? is it electric or a turbine build? is it display only or will it be available? Really kind of disappointed you didnt even talk about it sitting right there on the table..........
The larger E-flite DRACO 2.0m has been out for almost three years now. There's tons of information available for it, including in the many videos on this playlist: ua-cam.com/video/2U0if2nYsKI/v-deo.html
@@JeffinLowerAlabama Sweet! I have the new dash but not seen the improved gear. I modded mine myself. Glad to hear that HH has took notice and made these improvements. Kudos to them for that. 👍👍
@@mikebird8290 lol me too after I got the xfly f22 I said I must not buy anymore till I’ve flown a few lol when the email dropped couple days ago I just had to click that button lol 😂
Is there a bike mounted under the left wing of the real plane? If only there were a fishing boat mounted under the other wing then this is the best project ever build.

That's pretty neat Mike. I have a room full of r/c planes that I never fly anymore. I love these electric planes though.
I might actually be able to afford this one!
Pretty cool.
Freaking awesome! Ordering!
That is awesome, and it is under the stupid 250g thing. I'll have to get one!
Very cool, i may be able to aford this one 😁
Hell ya! Such an awesome flying airplane!
That is friggin AWESOME!
Pre-ordered 😳😮😀👍🏼

Yeah ... but does it have REVERSE thrust!?

Hopefully it will haul two of the rc dirt bikes and be able to charge them and power my home when the power goes out
plz come out with a DRACO X rc that whould be cool

Yes, starting in March of 2024 from our UK distributor, Logic RC: www.logicrc.com/?s=c:0,s:draco,c:10,c:10-30,c:10-30-10&ItemId=A-EFL13550
I love my❤ micro Draco❤, but when are we gonna see an rc scrappy, please 🙏🙏🙏
Can we have a Scrappy then we could have a miniature Mike Patey fleet
Oh HELL YES! I WAS WATING SO LONNG FOR THAT!! And Mike looks chuffed too! He is probably taking this one into bed tonight to snuggle with it :D
When is it aviable in Europe?
Micro DRACO will be available in the EU, UK and other regions in March of 2024!
I'd love to see HH make a model of Turbulence next. Scrappy is cool, but we need Mike's record breaking plane, large scale with big power.
Draco X ... the BAAP! (as we say it here in India !)
With the mountains in the background, the aircraft appears to be the full-size aircraft.
Here is what we say officially about the skill level for Micro DRACO:
Skill Level 2 - Some Experience Required
Skill Level 2 aircraft, like this one, are suitable for RC pilots with some experience and the skills to assemble and/or set up and fly similar class models.
Can we get a micro Turbulence?
so absolutely no info on the bigger version there? is it electric or a turbine build? is it display only or will it be available? Really kind of disappointed you didnt even talk about it sitting right there on the table..........
The larger E-flite DRACO 2.0m has been out for almost three years now. There's tons of information available for it, including in the many videos on this playlist: ua-cam.com/video/2U0if2nYsKI/v-deo.html
Alright HH can't wait for my Mighty Draco, Jeff in LA USA
Jeff. This one is going to be a big hit. Now all HH needs to do is come out with a V2 of its bigger brother. 😉
@@payitfwdrcl6171 Adam said on the 2.m Dracos being sold now they have an upgraded landing gear, stronger carbon and a gator'ing proof dash.
@@JeffinLowerAlabama Sweet! I have the new dash but not seen the improved gear. I modded mine myself. Glad to hear that HH has took notice and made these improvements. Kudos to them for that. 👍👍
