- A televised comment by Bridgerton star Adjoa Andoh about the Buckingham Palace balcony being “terribly white” has become the most complained about moment of 2023 so far, Ofcom has said.
More than 4,000 complaints have been filed about the remark, which was made when the actress, 60, appeared on ITV’s live coverage of Saturday’s coronation celebrations.
TalkTV’s Julia Hartley-Brewer is joined by Free Speech Union’s Ben Jones to discuss Adjoa Andoh's “terribly white” comment.

yes I witnessed it here in Canada for the first time at 56 although my daughter at 6 was denied help at school and she was intellectually disabled with no understanding of English language and a indigenous boy took her spot because he was behind in reading. I was told it was because of my privilege but 15 years later this is what happened to me personally.. I knew there were differences with indigenous and the rest of Canada (saying the rest because there is multi culture here like UK) I brought my disabled clients to a dance at the Ukrainian center and a indigenous worker called me a colonizer....in a dance that was for the disabled clients she brings her politics...unbelievable for her to be so arrogant.

As someone from a family that is “terribly white” I found her comments very offensive. Our country is 80%+ white and our Royal Family represents over a thousand years of British history and whether she likes it or not they are white. The Coronation was a wonderful ceremony, a great mixture of pomp and ceremony but at the same time acknowledging how diverse our country has become over the last 70 years and her remark was totally unnecessary.

As an older white man I recently had the obvious "cold shoulder" treatment from a young black female Sainsbury's staff member. When I needed a bit of help I was deliberately left stranded. I reported the incident. The preaching of "white guilt" is having an effect on many young black people I think.

The problem with our society is that it is fundamentally hypocritical. It purports to want and to always strive towards equality whilst at the same time accepting and even encouraging double standards across the board. It's quite simple, you can't both have equality and allow double standards based on race, gender etc. People can clearly see this hypocrisy and are rightly annoyed and frustrated.
Our society is run by hypocrites from top to bottom, like racism against whites has been normalised, so has hypocrisy.

The King's Coronation was a wonderful diverse spectacle for the whole world to see ruined for ITV viewers by someone with an obvious 'chip on the shoulder'. I think 4000+ complaints was just the tip of the iceberg

Can you imagine that being said the other way around? That person's career would be ruined. The woman who commented on the royal family claims she didn't mean to cause offense, but what was she expecting? She knew exactly what she was saying, she doesn't appear to be an unintelligent woman, and she ssid it for a reason or agenda. The fact she doesn't think it should cause offence in itself, is pretty racist, because if it were a comment about black people, she wouldn't have said it at all.
Adjoa Andoh knew exactly what she was saying and meant it, it was one of those moments when the mask slips and the truth comes out, no different to Diane Abbott and her letter to the Guardian but then they get to row it all back whereas if the situation was reversed they would be screaming for retribution on the person who made such a comment.

No, she’s embarrassed of her black heritage. Biracial people who make comments about racism always are. Meghan Markle for example states herself to be a proud black woman, yet she was appalled that arriving in Britain she was welcomed as having black blood and joining the Royal Family, no-one had ever called her black before! Because of that comment she has black followers from everywhere supporting her racist royal family opinion, yet what she actually said was, how dare you call me black. Who are the racists in these examples? The ones who don’t want to be black.

I dislike the way that period dramas set in the Regency Era are portrayed as terribly black when the country was overwhelmingly white and incidentally still is. I think we’re too late, the long march through the institutions is complete. I’m just pleased my lot avoided it. I live in one of the most racially diverse boroughs of London, it’s only recently that I’ve noticed a feeling of unrest. White racism has been made acceptable by these woke TV stations. My children and grandchildren were brought up without even noticing the colour of someone’s skin, their school friends and football teammates were all colours. It’s really sad, we’re going backwards…

Here's one to throw back at Adjoa Andoh - maybe if she'd not looked at the balcony but turned around and looked at the crowd she'd have noticed that, that too, was "terribly white". Rather than choosing to embrace the history and culture of the land they love to hate, the people of colour generally choose to show contempt, disinterest and disregard for the whole event.

If Paddy O'Connell honestly believed that Adjoa Andoh's comment was 'nothing to apologise for', then it is time for Mr O'Connell himself to be replaced.
Any show host allowing that sort of behaviour, especially in this context and at that time, should be stripped of his/her responsibility, strongly censured, and shown the way out of the buliding, and out of the profession. There is NO place for open racism in British Broadcasting, whichever direction it goes.
