I have pondered this since I was a kid on the school bus and saw a fly inside....I have waited my whole life for this moment
Phil Michmerhuizen Search UA-cam for Balls Out Physics Atmosphere
@@webstercat lmao you're a lunatic flat earther. At least you're so woke bro you have that going for you, do you put that on resumes? 😆 Phil skip the video if you cherish your brain cells
Same lol
Same here
seriously, i’ve always thought about what would happen if i stood at the front of the bus, facing the back while its driving and give one good jump straight up and see if the whole bus moves and i end up towards the back? same thing with a boat
“Do not try this at home”
*I don’t think that’s even possible bro*
You mean your house doesn’t drive? I feel bad for you man
Its called a rv
GPS would try to maintain a fixed geographic position.
A camera assisted guidance would try to move with the van.
Helium balloons would move towards the front when the van accelerates and towards the rear when decelerating.
A balloon that was neutral buoyant would maintain its position.
This experiment did more to test the effectiveness of the GPS or visual modes ability to do what they claim.
That's for a helium balloon though and is a different effect. In that case the positive or negative acceleration causes causes a pressure differential whose high preasure area lies opposite to the direction of acceleration. When accelerating forward in a a vechicle the air molecules are forced rearward or rather they tend to stay in place until the pressure in the rear reaches an equilibrium with the acceleration. This pressure differential is what causes the ballon to move forward.
Same thought.
Mark Daniel
So much effort to prove Isaac Newton has been right since 1686.
Who knew?
cprogrck
please don't make the balloon problem sound so complicated. You can just explain it in one sentence.
Because of first law of motion, air in the car tend to go to the rear of the vehicle during acceleration relative to the position of the vehicle that the air pushes the balloon forward.
The question you should ask is will it have the same result if the vehicle have it's rear open where the air can just escape?
cprogrck or, more easily explained, air is a fluid. It moves the same way any other fluid does, and as such anything in that fluid moves according to mass.
I can’t quit laughing. I think we share the same crazy curiosity about physics and what ifs. Great video!😂
Glad you enjoyed it Hoyt!
This video just answered all of my life questions
Same thing with a flying insect in your car ... they don't smash on the rear window.
Very good point!
My childhood questions are answered
that's because in an enclosed space the flying or hovering object/insect is protected from any headwind by the moving vehicle/vessel where they are enclosed. :)
they smush!
Sort of like when I was a kid, I thought you could throw a coin up in the air while riding in a car and it should land behind you but it never did, now I know that it’s because the coin starts out moving in the same direction and speed as the car you’re riding in.
Now i can finaly go to sleep
Hahaha btw I was being sarcastic
Lucky you.
Yes bro 😌
Lol!!!!
Yes so true
Hey I’ve got a physics background.
What happens is this, if you start the drone before moving the car, the drone will *not* move with the car because it has no acceleration in the direction that the car does.
However if you were to get going 20mph in the truck and fly the drone straight up relative to the car, it would stick with it.
@MysticalKO because when you’re driving at 60mph, you and whatever you’re holding is going 60mph already with the car
@@ashevilletrainman6989 but then it should begin to decelerate?
@@EliFuller20 There is nothing to cause it to decelerate. Since the drone is inside the truck, there is no air resistance to slow the drone down. If the drone was resting on the bed of the truck, and then the truck went up to 60 mph, and then the drone went straight up relative to the truck, it would move with the truck. Now, if the walls of the truck magically disappeared, then the drone would experience drag from the air and would decelerate from 60 mph down to 0 mph.
@@jamesonian90 yeah it would move with the truck but for how long? We're assuming that it'll just continuously move at that 60 even for a whole hour staying same speed with the truck throughout. Idk I just feel like that needs to be tested
For how long?? How long would it stick with it. If the car was driving for 5 hours in a straight line, would it still stick with it?
If you want the drone to move with the truck you have to let the truck get up to speed and keep that consistent speed then you can fly the drone. This way the drone is already going the same speed as you are.
SkyGuyChris no lol
dan k you are incorrect
SkyGuyChris your wrong mate, science says so
SkyGuyChris is not wrong. He is correct. If the drone would make no attempt to follow the truck (through GPS/ATTI mode), then it would not follow the truck if it was standing still initially, since they have no contact. If flying would begin when the truck is already moving, then it would retain the relative speed of the truck, and thus follow the truck.
Mortac exactly.
FINALLY, I’ve been asking this question this whole time and no one knew
It moves
Boom saved u 10 mins😎
Thanks
You're doing god's work my friend
Thanks man
Thank you, I went straight to the comments
This video is 5mins longer than it needs to be.
Van Balion II ...or your attention span is 5 minutes shorter than it needs to be.
More like 9 minutes
Van Balion II 9 minutes longer then it should be
This video is 10 minutes longer then it needs to be
GamerPoets do you know how attention spans work?
A video that has to be max 2 minutes is 10....
Then stop complaining and dont watch it
I don't agree with him.. This should've Ben a 1:30 video max
bc after 10 minutes they videos make ad money
This is a comedic entertainment channel, not an academic demonstration.
Its easy to explain with newtons 2nd law
F = m * a
Force is applied when an object with a constant mass accelerates
That means that the drone will stay stationary when the truck stands still or drives with a constant speed.
The reason for that is that an object wants to keep its current movement state.
So when the drone is in the truck and tge truck accelerates the drones mass wants to stay stationary and the friction is not high enough to hold against the force that is applied to the drone.
When the truck breaks after it drove with a constant speed its the same. The drone was stationary relative to tge truck, but not to the ground so it wants to keep its movement and crashes into tge front "wall" of the truck.
Sorry for my bad english.
Whatever is in motion, stays in motion
It's even easier to explain with Newton's first law.
It seems the only times I laugh are when I watch your videos. You are a ton of fun and you make my life a little nicer! Thanks so much!
Thanks Barry, that's why I do this.
I'm so glad you enjoy my silliness!
I've watched demonstrations of angular momentum and inertia with 🎈 balloons in a car but not a houvering craft.
This was a great idea!
Thank you Ken.
Ken I was worried the door was going to open to the whirring buzzsaw of death machine to reveal you impaled by a Phantom 4 Pro. Whew, you are one crazy SOB but I love it!
Thanks!
I was a bit nervous when the door was shut. Really loud too.
KEN ... they say consistency is the key to, well Everything, but especially UA-cam... i know not a more perfect example of Consistency than that of Ken Heron.
You sir are an Oak among a stand of Buckthorn. Love it.
Wait... "DO NOT try this at home!" but "we encourage you to create your own experiments"?
So "don't try this at home, but actually do try this at home"?
Haaa!!
No, don't do this particular thing, but DO experiment with OTHER stuff at home.
Ken Heron Well, let's check what happens if I use knifes as propeller blades... ;)
Honestly, that would be kinda awesome, but not something anyone should ever do.
Dude, common sense, watch it again.
He meant to not lock your self inside a van with a flying drone that can kill you
isn't this how the terminator started? yea Science
Brilliant experiment.
Gotta reach that full 10 minutes to get paid.
what does this means? You mean money from UA-cam? Please explain (yeah 4 years later)

Ken I’m disabled and I find very few things I’m passionate about. Your excitement and presence in your videos at first was off putting; how is this guy so comfortable with himself; his message, and his audience...?
But; I’ve learned that I never hated it; it’s just the raw pure ENVY of someone else enjoying a hobby or something they like to do; and it was never YOU I never liked; I was mad at my OWN self for never picking the hobby up after many failed attempts-
After your review of the Mavic mini; I am now a drone pilot; insured; and learn more everyday from your content. Love it.
Hey bud, that is so great to hear!
Welcome to the wonderful world of drone photography. We have a great community here and I'm glad you're part of it now!
I didn't catch your conclusion. The van has no pull or push on the drone. If you could just hover the drone in place, the van would drive away from it. Reasons why the van might not: the GPS function, the camera function, air pressure (high inside the van, low outside the moving van or vise versa).
Stanton Taylor and also, dji drones have got anti-collision sensors !!!
alberto imperiali - Phantom 3 does not
I don’t think there was!
Ken you are the best person that I have ever seen, with a drone and I watch a lot of video but you are my Favorite. Keep up the good work my friend
Thank you Ike.
3:48
thanks
Now that’s what I call having fun 😅🙌
A great example of the mechanics of an inertial frame. The same reason that if one of the guys jumped, they wouldn’t get slammed into the back of the Uhaul
I enjoyed watching YOU take the risks, rather than me. Dumb risks, but entertaining!
Thanks Doug!
You sure did a really great job on this video! I like you from the beginning, nice camera setup and really good audio! Test itself was really interesting, helped me alot to understand how dji drones are thinking and reacting.
keep up the good work! greeting from austria!
Hello Austria!!
This is a funny experiment on motion and how we perceive it love it
That's a cool video, Ken! Thanks for answering many questions!
Hi Tom! Hope you are doing well.
Thanks for stopping by the channel Tom! We're looking forward to having you on TNL June 7th!!

Love your channel, Tom, I've been watching it for a while now.
Thank you for this experiment
hey its crazy zack! i love how you said its a little dangerous but lets give it another go! the things you do and risking your drone for a good video
Thanks bud!!
You had me at "Let the professional idiots do this." LOL
YOU ARE BRILLIANT!
Ken, you asked why, and I have to respond with why not! Good stuff.
because the air molecules in the vehicle are traveling *with* the vehicle, open the windows, or back door, and you get a different effect. great experiment.
Why no prop guards?
Please be careful my friend. I don't think I could afford another go fund me just yet LOL :-)
HAAA!! Very true.
This is actually a entertaining video. It's kind of like when you're riding in a train and you jump up...what happens? Cool video and great job on debunking everything.
Beard Bro when you jump up your head hits the ceiling you get knocked unconscious and land in the same spot you jumped from.
I always wondered this concept with a house fly in a car. Interesting to see what happens with a drone.
A house fly, balloon, and feathers all have sufficient buoyancy and density in proportion to the volume of air around it to be carried along within the air that's in the car...a drone does not.
Ken you are amazing and inspiring...
Thanks!
Prop Guards would of been nice
IMRROcom *would have....learn ur own language ffs
U mut no have any ting beta to do with yo lif id10t
And you can't do any better...whats worse?
he did have glasses at least
Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Makes no sense there are no prop guards...
This was great. Good examples of GPS and VPS and what can screw with them.
"Dont try this at home" i cant fit a uhal in myhouse
Very cool vid. Thanks guys
Wow I've question myself that seens my brain started to think.
Except not a drone and myself jumping in a bus. Cheers
Drone: “I’m not locked in here with you. You’re locked in here with ME!!”
Physics 101 F=MA. (force equals mass times acceleration). Given a good GPS signal, the drone cares nothing about the truck being stationary or moving. It will try to maintain it's position relative to the satellites only not to the truck. The sensors on the bottom only manage height (z-position) but don't manage x or y position. With some drones the bottom sensor will try to land in a specific place (during RFH landing mode ONLY). Your video, while confusing physics concepts, was a good caution to those who want to launch a drone from a moving boat. Even a slow moving boat (with little or no relative wind) will leave a drone behind as the drone either stands still in GPS mode or stands still in ATTI mode as there are no forces to accelerate it forward (unless you move the stick forward during launch to create a force).
You are 75% correct.
The downward facing VPS cameras are there to take up the GPS slack with the X and Y positions.
Yay science!
Ken Heron it would be better to use a cheap one without GPS
Or we could blame it on magic
gps is ground based...for those assuming satellites are involved
GPS is not ground based. Orbiting satellites are used to determine positioning.
The Global Positioning System (GPS), originally Navstar GPS, is a satellite-based radionavigation system owned by the United States government and operated by the United States Air Force. It is a global navigation satellite system that provides geolocation and time information to a GPS receiver anywhere on or near the Earth where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites.
Don't know why there are so many dislikes. I really enjoyed this video.
You're very kind. Thank you.
@@KenHeron Ey, you make great content :-) I'm just simply enjoying it :-)
Thank you my friend. 🤓👍
I'm not sure what its GPS effects were, but I suspect that the shifting air density in the closed cabin, during acceleration, may have interfered.
umbraemilitos the GPS failed due to line of sight
Good catch on that drone
What if you jump while the truck is in motion? Would you land in the same spot or will you be dragged to the back of the truck?
MecoDroide you will move back a little bit
Ive wondered this my whole life, thank you
That was a great vid.... But... Next time try to think outside the box.
The rented moving box

Great video Ken! I noticed the RSD sticker on your case in the cab. Nice touch!

Ken Heron in a T-Shirt? Inconceivable!!!
@@KenHeron free kick
I laughed when you smacked his butt and tummy with your pad. Cool experiment. I always wondered how it worked.
My most anticipated question is answered
Same with sir Phil Michmerhuizen. I always wondered how a fly copes with speed when it's in an airplane or a closed vehicle? Is it moving with the airplane/vehicle? Is it one with the plane/vehicle?
I asked my physics teacher explained how was it possible that when you jump on a train you stand exactly at the right spot. He said that when a moving vehicle is at constant speed, that will happen. However when you are in the state above the ground and the vehicle accelerated, you will not stay on the same spot. You will end up opposite the direction where the vehicle is heading. Great experiment
try flying the drone in a airplane
GREAT idea!!!
Ken... You are hysterical
Thanks Edward!
Take a boat ⛴ and you will see the drone doesn't following you
GPS????
Yes, that's because a boat doesn't carry the air mass with it like a panel van.
Well,it's not a dog! but if the drone is horizontally faster than the boat ,it will even pass the boat.
Wait correct me if I'm wrong but for the first one if the drone is hovering in the air if you drive your just driveing away from the drone so it didn't move it stayed in place and the car moved correct
Hey Ken. I see you now have 50,000.... Brilliant!
And this is why the U-haul 'You can't do this with our truck' exclusion list is getting longer and longer :)
Locking urself in a van with a drone... Yea wtf
Hahahahahahah
OMG thank you a lot, a lot, I was wondering that sooooo much before I watch this video. Tbh I search this video.
Van u believe it..... U haul better believe it
Andrew Riddle such an overlooked comment... props to u bro
Almost like the age old question of if you jump while on a moving train does the train move around you.
Nice I always wondered about this ha
Ryan Miller Then you shouldve watched the Action Labs vid 6 months ago xd
So Random Or go to 6th grade class.
Beaving ok?
To anyone curious about the correct answer to this question ill sum it up in my own words:
You can fly a drone in a bus/train/airplane/car as long as it is traveling at a constant speed and not accelerating. If you were to take off while any of these were still getting up to speed then it would appear to either fly forward or backwards.
The same goes with turning, if the bus youre flying on takes a right while youre hovering, the drone will not turn with the bus. Same would go with an airplane.
But if you were riding an airplane, waited until after takeoff, and knew the plane was traveling in a straight line with no elevation change, you could fly your drone around.
You would just have to be careful of turbulance from the propellers in a small space (and security 😂).
Also, why does every video do this experiment using some dangerous drone with knives as propellers. Should definitely be doing this test with a ducted whoop.
CRINGE LEVEL OVER 9000
Bacon Monster how old are you
Its over 8000 cringy uncanon bullshit.
8:36 though 😹
This is very informative. Great video!
things get weird when you think about the earth spinning 100s mph and moving around the universe.
what if the earths rotation created gravity and atmosphere pulling things inward?
Gamer007 nah then it would have a vortex
Soak a tennis ball in water then spin it... things being spun don’t naturally want to go inward... they want to go outward. As you spin said soaked tennis ball the water droplets fly away from the ball not retained on the surface. This proves earth is not spinning 1100mph as the oceans wouldn’t maintain level stuck to the surface of solid earth.
The earth spins at
1000mph on its axis. But is actually traveling through space around 18,000mph while orbiting the sun. The atmosphere and everything on the planet is held on by the Earth's gravity. All of these statements can be proven with mathematics and observational evidence.
Mr. Beaulieu what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard.
At no point in your rambling incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought.
Everyone in this comment section is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul.
Mr. shuffett, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard.

Everyone in this comment section is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points and may science have mercy on your soul.
For this experiment you need a "dumb" drone. One that does not auto hover or gps or ANYTHING. A cheap one that is fully manual.
Now, if you hover it with the van stationary then move the van forward, the drone WILL smack the back wall (if you do not move the controler due to reflex). You feel this effect every time you push the gas pedal down. This is the force that pushes you into your seat so essentially YOU are smacking the back wall but the back wall is your seat. Someone mentioned the bug in your car does not smack the back window. That is because the bug is grounded on a surface of the car and when it starts flying, it flies with the momentum of the vehicle. If it comes through the window while you are moving, it will indeed smack the back or whatever surface it hits first...... It does not automatically and instantly accelerate to the speed of the car just because it enters the air inside the cabin (or your mouth if you have ever swallowed a bug lol).
If you land the drone, move the van forward, then take off the drone will have the momentum of the van and hover and slowly move to back wall as it "coasts" to a stop just as if you stop from a full speed sprint, it will coast to a stop unless you put it in reverse to "throttle brake" it.
And fony
none the less, that was really interesting, great video thanks for sharing
You bet Faith!
The earth is flat this proves it.
Wrong lol
FPS Dovah keep on trolling bro but your game is weak. The flat earth trigger is played out. Be subtle about it make it seem like you are nice and mean well but are ignorant. Then after some nice but condescending responses hit them with the Bible argument. Unless you are serious about the Earth being flat. In that case good luck to you this is going to be a confusing life until inevitably you eat a tide pod eliminating yourself from the gene pool.
FPS Dovah your brain is flat your comment proved it.
You guys realise that this is a joke right?
This is copyrighted yes,but if the world was flat the species called cats would knock us all off the world and take over.
If you are on a train travelling the speed of light and then u walk from the back carriage to the front, are u travelling faster than the speed of light?
Thank you so much I always wondered what would happen in this exact situation thanks for answering it!
Its funny i asked myself about this when i was driving to work now this exist.... its lit
I wish you had tried taking off from the floor of the truck while the truck was moving in a straight line at a steady speed, and your GPS and visual stabilizers were turned off. Under such conditions I'd expect the drone to maintain a continual position, but it would still be interesting to see.
Smaller drawn prop guards bigger box I've always wondered this myself cool video
