      @@OhioTropicsI’ve just bought an orchid from a supermarket that was heavily reduced in price as it looked almost dead.
      I’m hoping to revive it!
      Some of the leaves were rotting as they were covered in compost but the remaining leaves look ok.
      It has just one stem.
      The white flowers on it are all wilted & drooping.
      The very top of the stem, where the flowers are still attached, is yellow, bent & looks to have been damaged.
      I’ve repotted the plant with orchid compost & watered it using orchid fertiliser.
      Do you advise that I cut the stem right back? If so do I cut above or below the very last node at the base of the stem?
      I’m nervous to cut in the wrong place!!
      Hoping you will kindly advise me!!
      Thank you!!!

    I have a beauty that I trimmed back to center of the plant when the blossoms dropped off.... in just a few months, low and behold, I discovered a new stem forming.... I water usually by misting the bark until it feels heavy enough and had read that you don't feed a flowered orchid... it's in a room with very bright light but not in direct sun really fun to see what happens! consider it a gift when one of them re-blooms (maybe they like my choice of Netflix viewing...)

    My orchid bloomed and then the flowers fell off, after that the stem started to dry out and go a yellowish colour, I then cut it off at the neared node and since then the rest of the stem has turned the same. It’s grew two healthy dark green leaves and a new one is starting to grow. What do I do with the dead stem? And will my orchid re bloom? And if it does when? Thanks

    • @OhioTropics
      @OhioTropics  4 роки тому +8

      Hi Rebecca! Sometimes that happens, and in that case, you would just cut the flower spike off as close to the bottom as you can. Your orchid will send out new flower spikes and will typically do it yearly if they're happy. They will typically send out new spikes in Fall/Winter, but I've seen some of mine do it at other times of the year as well. Hope this helps!

    I’m a first time orchid mom and I’m so afraid to damage it! I have two questions!
    In the example where you cut the stem at the base, once the plant has rested, and grown some new leaves…
    1)how long will it be before the stem grows back and tries to flower again and
    2) where will the new stem grow from? The same relative spot where the original stem was?

    • @OhioTropics
      @OhioTropics  11 місяців тому +1

      Usually, they will grow a brand new spike somewhere at the base of the plant where the leaves emerge from the potting mix. And usually it will be around now...Fall or early winter time. It can vary a little bit, but this is what usually happens in many cases.

    I cut much lower than the node below the flower. They were stressed store-bought orchids and I have actually just repotted them because their medium was in such bad shape. My friend, who is a florist, recommended I cut low and continue using flowering feed instead of growing feed to promote new flowering growth. Have I done anything wrong? I am really worried because I love these plants.

    • @OhioTropics
      @OhioTropics  5 років тому

      Hi Bryce! You can absolutely use the "bloom booster" fertilize to encourage better blooming. As far as cutting them lower, there is nothing wrong with this. But I would recommend cutting one, or two nodes max, below where the bottom flower was. I wouldn't cut much lower, but you can experiment. If anything, it will not kill the plant if you cut in the "wrong" spot. Sometimes you can actually see where the new flower stems are coming out, and this makes it easy to know where to cut. Hope this helps.

    Why do some people say cut above the first or second node from the base?

    • @OhioTropics
      @OhioTropics  2 роки тому

      There is no right or wrong, and sometimes it's just a matter of preference. Sometimes you may see a side spike starting to form on one of the lower nodes, so you can just snip the original flower stalk off right above that node. You can also experiment and see what works best for you. You're not going to kill the plant by snipping the stalk in the "wrong" area :-)

      The new sprout may or may not grow as tall. It will likely be a little shorter. Sometimes you will start to see the new side branches off the old flower stalk, so you'll know where to cut. But if you don't see any, just cut where I describe below the flowers and it most likely will continue blooming for you!

    I've been given a total of 4 orchids now, over a period of time, and they all appear to be doing well. The problem is that in addition to flowering well, they are adding new leaves and one or two of them are now so heavy, because of the weight of the leaves, that I can barely lift them. One has 19 leaves! They appear to be forming new leaves both from the top and the bottom. Is it OK to cut off any of the older leaves? Otherwise, I'll have to repot and find some huge pots for them! Hello! Sometimes the flower stalks won't branch off with new growth. You win some and lose some! :-) If I notice that there is no new growth on the stem after a year or so, I would just cut the whole stem off. There is no harm in leaving it though as long as it is still green. So if you don't mind having a bare flower stem (as long as it's green), then go ahead and leave it. Sometimes your plant will decide for you, and the entire flower stem will turn yellow and at that point you can cut the whole stem off. Hope this helps!

    Nice. You can try to propagate new orchid plants (or Keikis ) from the spike you just cut off by wrapping the spike in spaghnum moss and putting it in a tall plastic or glass vase, with just the bottom end of the spike touching the bottom. Add a few ounces of distilled water, put fenestrated plastic plant wrap over the top of the vase and secure with tape or a rubber band. Put in a sunny window and the greenhouse terrarium often will grow a new plant off one of the dormant buds in a few months. Once the new roots get a few inches long, cut the new plant from the old spike and repot. Try this each time your orchid is done flowering to try to make more plants from the cut flower spike.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago, he came home with another orchid plant! I’m determined not to let this one die. Some of the flowers are falling already but it does have a couple of buds that are ready to bloom.

    I repotted my orchid a year ago in potting soil 😬 I see alot of people use bark/moss etc. It has bloomed a couple time since then. Should I repot into a different substance? For having not been the best plant owner I would say it's doing pretty well. Has alot of big leaves at the base and they're dark green. Over all it looks healthy but I feel like I'm the only one using potting soil, in a Clay pot..... any advice?

    • @OhioTropics
      @OhioTropics  5 років тому +2

      Hi Brooke! You might have just the right combination of conditions for that to work! Usually that spells death for moth orchids! Phalaenopsis orchids are epiphytes which means that they grow on trees in nature. Their root systems are exposed to a lot of air. These particular plants don't grow in the ground in nature. Like you mentioned, they are either grown in a bark mix or in sphagnum moss. I personally grow almost all of my orchids in a bark mix. It ensures that they get enough oxygen. They need a chunky media really to do well and survive. I would have to see a photo of your plant, but I would suggest that you change to a bark mix. Maybe email me some photos first of your plant? I'm very curious now! You can send the email to theohiotropics@gmail.com

    Hi, i hope you read this and would kindly answer my question. So i have an orchid that have 5 spikes. All the blooms already dropped. My question is, if I cut all the spikes all the way to the base, how many new spikes will I get in the next season? Is it possible that it will grow 5 spikes again?

    • @OhioTropics
      @OhioTropics  3 роки тому

      Hi Naila! Wow, 5 spikes is a lot on one plant! I wouldn't recommend cutting all of them down. I would suggest cutting it right below where the bottom flower was on each stalk, like I talked about in the video. They should branch off and continue blooming. If the plant had 5 flower stalks when you obtained it, I would say it's unlikely to do that in your home. It was probably grown in very optimal conditions to generate that many spikes. If you cut all of them off, I can't predict how many flower spikes it will grow, but I'd be shocked if it grew 5 for you. Hope this helps.

      They probably won't be in bloom 100% of the time, but this can definitely help extend the blooming period! If you collect enough orchids though, you may be able to increase your chances of having at least one or two plants in bloom at any given time.

I’m debating if I should just cut it all the way down to the base or leave it to maybe produce more flowers. My question is, is it too late in the season for it to waste energy producing more flowers?
    And if I cut it down to the base, do I feed orchid fertilizer still?

    • @OhioTropics
      @OhioTropics  3 роки тому +1

      You can trim the flowering stalk at any time. I prefer not to cut it all the way down anymore because it gives your plant the opportunity to rebloom if you just trim it back to a node. They won't always rebloom off the original stalk, but they often do. I would still fertilize the plant year round for the most part. You can probably refrain during the winter time.

      You're very welcome! The pale green-gray strands that you see are aerial roots. Do NOT cut those off. I would mist those to water them. Even daily if you can. As far as the flower spike, it doesn't always rebloom. But as long as it's green, I would leave it on the plant and wait :-).
