Whitey Herzog, who was director of player development for the Mets at the time, was ordered to stay away from that funeral lest there would be any speculation that he would be named manager. He never forgave the Mets for that. I've always believed that had Hodges remained alive, the Mets never would have tanked the way they did in the late 70s.
