When a young boy in a galaxy far, far away, my Dad would take me to the Royal Oak, Michigan public library and read the Mulford books. The huge difference between that Hoppy and William Boyd's never really dawned on me. Now I can read Mulford online and watch these great Hoppy's and still enjoy them both, many times over.

I was born in the 1970s and all I can say I love these old black and white western movies. Life seem joyous and simple back then. To much of the fast lane today.

being a kid in the '30s would make you a very old guy/gal now- I know the sentiment but believe we were born for the age in which we live- know for a fact I'm happy not to have to go through the 'growing' pains of teens and '20s again.

I'm reading the Hopalong series by Clarence Mulford. Hoppy is a far different character in the books. He's coarser, tougher and meaner. But the movies use the same book characters which is nice.

The locations of the movie are damn good and suits. Each Hoplong storie is interesting to watch unlike other movies. In fact i have become a fan of that serious of movies. Thanks.

I've been reading the Hopalong Cassidy books by Clarence Mulford, and there is a significant difference between the Hoppy of the movies and the Hoppy in the books, but I still think Bill Boyd was the definitive Hopalong Cassidy. The films were obviously tailored to be family-friendly so the kids would have fun at the Saturday Matinees in the 40's. Here's an excerpt from the original book "BAR-20". I typed it as it appeared in print (you'll see how Mulford loved to use colloquial language). In this scene, a corrupt, barrel-chested sheriff came in a saloon threatening Hoppy and the Bar-20 cowboys. Hoppy punches him between the eyes in mid-sentence, knocking him down:
'‘Hopalong walked over to the marshal, jerked him to his feet and slammed him against the bar. Then he tore the cheap badge from its place and threw it on the floor. Reaching down, he drew the marshal’s revolver from its holster and shoved it in its owner’s hand. “Yore th’ marshal of this place and it’s too good for me, but yore goin’ to pick up that tin lie,” pointed at the badge, and yore goin’ to do it right now. Then yore goin’ to get kicked out of that door, an’ if yu stops runnin’ while I can see yu I’ll fill yu so full of holes yu’ll catch cold. Yore a sumptious marshal, yu are! Yore the snortingest ki-yi that ever stuck its tail atween its laigs, yu are. Yu wants to keep to yoreself or some papoose or I’ll slide yu over the Divide so fast you won’t have time to grease yore pants. Pick up that license tag an’ let me see you percolate so lively that yore back’ll look like a ten cent piece in five seconds. Flit!” The marshal, dazed and bewildered, stooped and fumbled for the badge. Then he stood up and glanced at the gun in his hand and at the eager man before him. Cursing streaks of profanity, he staggered to the door and landed in a heap in the street from the force of Hopalong’s kick. Struggling to his feet, he ran unsteadily down the block and disappeared around the corner.’

Eddie Dean is my favorite cowboy singer. According to what I read, he never made it "big" because his wife wanted them to do their own management.

How come he doesn't hop ? In the books he hops because of an injury . Hoppy always reminds me of the Kindly Uncle we would all like. I enjoy Hoppy movies. But I also feel they are way too high on the Goody Two Shoes meter.
