54: Neko Case on warrior women

Neko Case was raised in working-class Washington State and spent her turbulent childhood shuffling between divorced parents before leaving home at 15. By 17 she was playing drums and at 23 she moved to Vancouver to study art, where she played in local punk bands and began to explore country music. She released her debut record The Virginian in 1997 and 9 more solo albums have followed with her latest Hell On out this month. It's co-produced by Björn Yttling from Peter, Bjorn and John and includes collaborations with the likes of Beth Ditto, Laure Veiers, KD Lang, Robert Forster and New Pornographers cofounder Carl Newman. The record was borne in a literal fire. Neko was in the middle of recording in Stockholm when she got a 3am phone call telling her that her house back in Vermont was burning down and she'd likely lose everything. On today's podcast she tells us why she's inspired by the warrior women of history.
