I've just the same situation at my garage door, taking off cloves, getting out the key etc. My opener seems to be very similar to yours so many thanks for this video. It will help me a lot get this done.
@@AndreasSpiess we use to do the same here, however, we have most of the garage doors on rolling code. how we do it, plug the original remote into the headlight and with a relay, you simulate a button press via the HIGH BEAM switch on the handlebars. In this way, you dont have to broadcast your private garage code all the day long along your tour.
So far I was happy to not having to press a button. But you can add one if you are concerned. My car mostly moves when the 12V is on. So it is hard to track.
Very nice job and so interesting! I know it takes a long time to make those videos. If that makes you feel any better, after watching your videos, I too spend a long time reading related content (thanks for the links) and hacking around ;-)
Just noticed and watched this video. Better late than never! :-) Now I'm wondering why I have to push buttons in my car to get into my gated community and into my garage, or use a key to get into my house and office. Some companies should be in the business of automating these tasks. I'm surprised it hasn't become commonly available yet...
I use a extra opener remote. I soldered in a relay that simulates a button press when I honk the horn. I power 85 from the horn. 86 connects to ground. 30 and 87 connect to the remotes button solder points. I use the battery in the remote. It lasts fo years.
Also a good idea. I wanted to have it waterproof under the saddle of my Harley. So I had to go this way. But in a car, your method would be preferable.

+XerotoLabs Good Idea. I Think, It should be possible to create a 40 MHz signal using internal timers. And if not, 13.3 Mhz (40/3) should be possible. And because the ESP creates a square signal it should have lots of 3rd grade harmonics to open a garage...
+XerotoLabs By the way: This timing procedure is my standard procedure because it is non-blocking. You can do something in the loop. And it is more precise because it takes the rest of the code also into account. Delay() does not do these two things. There is only one small issue: If millis() or micros() gets big enough it starts at 0. This loop has no delay because millis() is smaller than entry right at the beginning. This is why I usually use unsigned long numbers.
+XerotoLabs I saw the video. It is really interesting. For my case, I have to hit the two frequencies quite exact as I cannot trim the receiver as it was possible in the old TVs.

Awesome video very well put together man, my only issue is riding around with a constant transmitted, meet personally I probably would have hooked it up to my last turning signal if I had to turn left to get into my street on a norm then I would go ahead and program the power to that you left turn signal for infants or to your horn neighbors might not like that so turning signal might be better. The reason I say this cuz there's enough radio traffic out there already, unnecessary traffic is just that unnecessary

Great work done ;-) Do you have a guess, why you had to adjust the frequency? Deviding the frequency of the used quartz should give an exact frequency, shouldn't it?
The chip I used can produce all frequencies up to more than 40 MHz. So, I had to tell it, which frequency I want. But it is quartz based and you program the output frequency by setting the division factor

At the 5m17s mark, what is meant by the 'sender uses "short" 500us signals, while the "long" uses 1ms'? Also when re-creating the signal, I assume the transmitter repeats the signal over-and-over while the button is pressed?
Excellent informative video and I have a question. I took a 20 year old remote control key fob that broadcasts on approximately 315 mHz and recorded the data stream using an SDR radio and displayed it using the Audacity program as you have done in the video. I recorded both the "close door" and "open door" signals in the AM mode because this was the only mode that gave me a clean data stream. Both data streams seem to have the same duty cycle. The only difference is that each time they are broadcast, they appear on a slightly different carrier frequency with the "close door" carrier signal always being higher than the "open door" signal. My question is since there seems to be no difference in the duty cycle between the two signals, do you think that they are using the frequency difference to differentiate between the two signals? Why do you think the signals change frequency every time the signal is broadcast? Is this part of the design or is it the result of a faulty oscillator?
Frequency modulation usually uses only one burst and changes the carrier frequency. Maybe you watch my newer video about 433MHz hacking with SDR. AFAIK you can use the software used there also for other frequencies.

Hi Andreas, this is an amazing video. I've been waiting to do it for a long time, but only recently got my SDR dongle. I have an E.T. Blue 2 button dual code remote and although advertised to operate on 433.92, it actually works at around 433.87. However, I did not see two different modulated frequencies, only one strong in the middle, and then a few going outwards, and when I recorded and viewed in Audacity, there was no defined binary, only what looked like a sound wave. I'm not sure if it has something to do with security, or if it works differently, but most probably I'm doing something wrong. I would greatly appreciate it if you, or anyone reading this could help me out. Cheers 👍

hi Andreas, What did you use for an antenna, because in my experience at a relatively low frequency like 40Mhz this id the most difficult and indeed the most important thing to condense to a small size, and 'ordinary' ferrite is very unhelpful here in a transmitting antenna.
I use a wire under the saddle. But because the motor cycle is of metal, the reach is not big. I want to try once a ferrite antenna, and maybe I will add a transistor and 12 volts to increase output power.
If you can hack it you can build another receiver. But if it is a modern design it probably uses a rolling code (not easy to hack) and you would have to connect to its receiver outputs.

You seem not to use an antenna or amplifier, is the ad9850 sufficient to have a earible signal ? I have a very weak signal as I roll away from the sdr antenna. I tried with my garage as you did but I faild miserably :')
+bobz The AD9850 has a 5volt signal. If you connect a few 10 cm of cable it should be capable to bridge a few meters. Ideal would be lambda/4 which is about 2.5 m ;-)
Hello Andreas, do you mean plug a quarter wave antenna with, on sine-wave output, the vertical radiator, and on the GND, the ground plane ? Should I use some sort of SMA connector, plugged on sine-wave output of the AD9850 and on the ground ? Thanks
How about the FCC ID if it is available in the United States it must have FCC ID and has a test report and includes Frequency. I have never heard of a garage opener using that frequency here in the US though.

+Yasin Demircioglu You have to find out in which band your transmitter works. Usually, you can google this. If not, try at least around 433 MHz, because many remote controls use this frequency. Without knowing the band, you have to check the "millions" of frequencies.

Many modulations exist, so, if you use the wrong one to demodulate, your audio file is useless. You can also not judge from the audio file which modulation was uses. So, google and experiment. It has to contain digital signals...
I watched your recent video #209 where you performed a similar concept with a Raspberry Pi instead of an Arduino. Do you think this is possible to implement for this use case? Or is the Pi too slow to output a signal as fast as that. Also, could I use Universal Radio Hacker with in Phase mode or Freq. Shift mode to replace the audacity process?

Andreas Spiess Seytonic has made a tutorial with a Raspberry Pi Zero and a piece of copper wire to send wav files. Let's assume that I could Zend the wav file at the same frequency as the original remote. Could the wav file open the garage door ?

I might be doing something wrong, but I am not able to detect anything ralated to my Opener. Using SDR# I am able to listen to radio so it works for sure. But I don't know how to find frequency of my Opener. Looking at IF spectrum I am not able to find it. In main screen I can see only narrow frequency range and I have no idea how to find the one I need

+Venkatesh E Saleae sells great small usb logic analyzers. The software runs on you PC and can decode all kind of protocols including SPI and I2C. There are many copied versions on aliexpress or ebay. But, of course, the use of the software with these devices is illegal, but working.
@@AndreasSpiess Isn't it a bit too loud? I mean this thing doesn't consume that much but keeping it constantly turned on result in such a great waste of power. You could use the geo-localization on your phone (or in your device if you want) so that any time you reach your home it detects that specific area and then eventually it sends the ok to the transmitter.

Wow, hast Dir ja echt viel Arbeit damit gemacht. Ich bin den leichten weg gegangen und hab einfach nen zweiten billigen 433Mhz Empfänger dran gehangen. Dafür gibt es schicke kleine Sender die an den Schlüsselbund passen. Besser als der Klotz der bei dem Garagentorantrieb dabei war. Bin mir nicht sicher ob Deine Methode mit meiner Fernbedienung funktioniert hätte, da die keinen festen Code, sondern einen alternierenden Code schickt. Werde mir aber trotzdem mal so einen SDR Emfpänger zu legen und das testen.

Ich bin übrigens gerade am Thema RF Verbindungen und habe heute morgen so eine 433 MHz Fernsteuerung ausgepackt. Leider hat sie noch nicht richtig funktioniert. Vielleicht verwende ich sie in einem späteren Video.
Dann geht das natürlich nicht. Habe z.B. auch den Schlüsselschalter durch einen RFID-Leser ersetzt. Weil das Schloß im Winter immer zugefroren ist. Das hab ich aber noch mit nem PIC gemacht. Bin erst seit kurzem mit der Arduino Plattform zugange. Unter anderem weil ESPs in Lua-Script zu programmieren ein Krampf ist. Hab hier auch ein paar ganz billige 433Mhz Sende- und Empfangsmodule liegen. 90cent das paar. Will damit versuchen Funksteckdosen zu schalten und auch ein paar andere Spielereien. Auf dem Computerclub UA-cam Kanal wurde auch das SDR Modul verwendet um 433Mhz Wetterstationen auszulesen. Hab mir so eins auch gerade bei Gearbest für weniger als 7,-€ bestellt. Any of you guys know if its possible to track the signal from a gate's remote control? My gate (its a couple of feet from car) opens by itself when im working on my car, i suspect someone is opening it on purpose when im around. Is there any way i can track where the signal or which direction the signal is coming from? I need to find the bastard thats doing it.
wouldn't it be easier if you connected your remote to your bike's battery and shorted the button? or extended the remote button to the bike handle and stuck the remote on the bike permanently? or even easier, glue the remote to the bottom of the bike seat so you always know where it is? in any case just use the existing remote. cheaper, faster and easier.
+Ady Price You are right, it could be possible to do hat. There were a few reasons to do my way: We have only one remote and now, I can leave this one in our car. And I hope, I will be able to get it smaller than the original one. Because of humidity issues on a bike, I want also to be able to cover it completely with hot glue. I have to admit, I had a third reason: I wanted to play around with the new technology of SDR radio and DDS and found, this is a good example to do that. I am just an engineer ;-)

Cool, but hard. went a simple way. bought an extra remote. solder a 2x0,25mm cable to the push contacts and added 3 push buttons on a side pannel. I know control main access + 2 garage door inside for less than 30euro in 20min. It runs on the remote control battery. just need to be replaced every few years.
I am working on decoding my fixed code garage door opener code. I get 41 bits of binary that looks like 10011011100110111001101110111001100110001 when decode in inspectrum. This cant be correct because the end part of the code does not repeat. There are 9 dip switches that are the following code - 101010110. I figure the 1001 = 1 and the 1011 =0 but that doesnt complete the code correctly towards the end. Any thoughts? A copy of the transmitted code can be found at github.com/jfender1/garagedooropener. I do not understand a lot about these remote codes. This video was intended to show the different technologies, Its primary goal was not the "hacking". For 433MHz, you get many self learning remotes. Maybe this is for you.
That is too much work. Also to find the frequency and code you could just buy or rent a handheld frequency Counter. I would try to purchase an extra remote.

Andreas Spiess You’re absolutely correct. You need the dongle to record. Once you recorded every button, replay is done only with the Pi. And a chip is better than having a Pi in your motorcycle. The only good thing is you can skip te demodulation part, which is the most difficult part.

Maybe because the car is not delivered by the same company as the remote?

The openers "guts" are in a waterproof plastic case and I sealed it where the wires go in with silicone. It's waterproof. It's under the seat.

After watching CNlor 's video about getting a ESP8266 to broadcast color TV , i half expected to see you use a ESP v12 for the transmitter . Great projects as always.
+XerotoLabs Good Idea. I Think, It should be possible to create a 40 MHz signal using internal timers. And if not, 13.3 Mhz (40/3) should be possible. And because the ESP creates a square signal it should have lots of 3rd grade harmonics to open a garage...
+XerotoLabs By the way: This timing procedure is my standard procedure because it is non-blocking. You can do something in the loop. And it is more precise because it takes the rest of the code also into account. Delay() does not do these two things. There is only one small issue: If millis() or micros() gets big enough it starts at 0. This loop has no delay because millis() is smaller than entry right at the beginning. This is why I usually use unsigned long numbers.

Awesome video very well put together man, my only issue is riding around with a constant transmitted, meet personally I probably would have hooked it up to my last turning signal if I had to turn left to get into my street on a norm then I would go ahead and program the power to that you left turn signal for infants or to your horn neighbors might not like that so turning signal might be better. The reason I say this cuz there's enough radio traffic out there already, unnecessary traffic is just that unnecessary

Do you have a guess, why you had to adjust the frequency? Deviding the frequency of the used quartz should give an exact frequency, shouldn't it?
The chip I used can produce all frequencies up to more than 40 MHz. So, I had to tell it, which frequency I want. But it is quartz based and you program the output frequency by setting the division factor

If I remember right they are compatible. If I remember right, you have to use different constants. You find examples with google.

200m is a lot. And for sure highly illegal. I think, you would need an amplifier for that.
At the 5m17s mark, what is meant by the 'sender uses "short" 500us signals, while the "long" uses 1ms'? Also when re-creating the signal, I assume the transmitter repeats the signal over-and-over while the button is pressed?

Excellent informative video and I have a question. I took a 20 year old remote control key fob that broadcasts on approximately 315 mHz and recorded the data stream using an SDR radio and displayed it using the Audacity program as you have done in the video. I recorded both the "close door" and "open door" signals in the AM mode because this was the only mode that gave me a clean data stream. Both data streams seem to have the same duty cycle. The only difference is that each time they are broadcast, they appear on a slightly different carrier frequency with the "close door" carrier signal always being higher than the "open door" signal. My question is since there seems to be no difference in the duty cycle between the two signals, do you think that they are using the frequency difference to differentiate between the two signals? Why do you think the signals change frequency every time the signal is broadcast? Is this part of the design or is it the result of a faulty oscillator?
Frequency modulation usually uses only one burst and changes the carrier frequency. Maybe you watch my newer video about 433MHz hacking with SDR. AFAIK you can use the software used there also for other frequencies.
Is it legal to keep the transmitter on all the time? I understand it is low power but it seems to me you do create QRM to save adding a... button.

Hi Andreas, this is an amazing video. I've been waiting to do it for a long time, but only recently got my SDR dongle. I have an E.T. Blue 2 button dual code remote and although advertised to operate on 433.92, it actually works at around 433.87. However, I did not see two different modulated frequencies, only one strong in the middle, and then a few going outwards, and when I recorded and viewed in Audacity, there was no defined binary, only what looked like a sound wave. I'm not sure if it has something to do with security, or if it works differently, but most probably I'm doing something wrong. I would greatly appreciate it if you, or anyone reading this could help me out. Cheers 👍

What did you use for an antenna, because in my experience at a relatively low frequency like 40Mhz this id the most difficult and indeed the most important thing to condense to a small size, and 'ordinary' ferrite is very unhelpful here in a transmitting antenna.
I use a wire under the saddle. But because the motor cycle is of metal, the reach is not big. I want to try once a ferrite antenna, and maybe I will add a transistor and 12 volts to increase output power.
Andreas, any thoughts on how to use the homelink buttons in a car to control other things? For instance, exterior lights
If you can hack it you can build another receiver. But if it is a modern design it probably uses a rolling code (not easy to hack) and you would have to connect to its receiver outputs.

You seem not to use an antenna or amplifier, is the ad9850 sufficient to have a earible signal ? I have a very weak signal as I roll away from the sdr antenna. I tried with my garage as you did but I faild miserably :')
+bobz The AD9850 has a 5volt signal. If you connect a few 10 cm of cable it should be capable to bridge a few meters. Ideal would be lambda/4 which is about 2.5 m ;-)

Self answer : I put a lambda/2 just on the sine output and it works well for my need :)
How about the FCC ID if it is available in the United States it must have FCC ID and has a test report and includes Frequency. I have never heard of a garage opener using that frequency here in the US though.

+Yasin Demircioglu You have to find out in which band your transmitter works. Usually, you can google this. If not, try at least around 433 MHz, because many remote controls use this frequency. Without knowing the band, you have to check the "millions" of frequencies.

Many modulations exist, so, if you use the wrong one to demodulate, your audio file is useless. You can also not judge from the audio file which modulation was uses. So, google and experiment. It has to contain digital signals...

I watched your recent video #209 where you performed a similar concept with a Raspberry Pi instead of an Arduino. Do you think this is possible to implement for this use case? Or is the Pi too slow to output a signal as fast as that. Also, could I use Universal Radio Hacker with in Phase mode or Freq. Shift mode to replace the audacity process?
It is not only about speed, you also need to create the exact frequency on 40 MHz. I do not think you can do that with a "barefoot" Pi

Andreas Spiess Seytonic has made a tutorial with a Raspberry Pi Zero and a piece of copper wire to send wav files. Let's assume that I could Zend the wav file at the same frequency as the original remote. Could the wav file open the garage door ?

I might be doing something wrong, but I am not able to detect anything ralated to my Opener. Using SDR# I am able to listen to radio so it works for sure. But I don't know how to find frequency of my Opener. Looking at IF spectrum I am not able to find it. In main screen I can see only narrow frequency range and I have no idea how to find the one I need

+Venkatesh E Saleae sells great small usb logic analyzers. The software runs on you PC and can decode all kind of protocols including SPI and I2C. There are many copied versions on aliexpress or ebay. But, of course, the use of the software with these devices is illegal, but working.

You could use the geo-localization on your phone (or in your device if you want) so that any time you reach your home it detects that specific area and then eventually it sends the ok to the transmitter.
My Harley is probably louder and consumes much more current ;-)

Wow, hast Dir ja echt viel Arbeit damit gemacht. Ich bin den leichten weg gegangen und hab einfach nen zweiten billigen 433Mhz Empfänger dran gehangen. Dafür gibt es schicke kleine Sender die an den Schlüsselbund passen. Besser als der Klotz der bei dem Garagentorantrieb dabei war. Bin mir nicht sicher ob Deine Methode mit meiner Fernbedienung funktioniert hätte, da die keinen festen Code, sondern einen alternierenden Code schickt. Werde mir aber trotzdem mal so einen SDR Emfpänger zu legen und das testen.
Wenn meiner auf 433 MHz laufen würde, hätte ich das vielleicht auch versucht. Aber meiner läuft auf 40 MHz.
War eigentlich auch nur ein Projekt zum spielen und lernen, ob ich es kann...

Ich bin übrigens gerade am Thema RF Verbindungen und habe heute morgen so eine 433 MHz Fernsteuerung ausgepackt. Leider hat sie noch nicht richtig funktioniert. Vielleicht verwende ich sie in einem späteren Video.
Dann geht das natürlich nicht. Habe z.B. auch den Schlüsselschalter durch einen RFID-Leser ersetzt. Weil das Schloß im Winter immer zugefroren ist. Das hab ich aber noch mit nem PIC gemacht. Bin erst seit kurzem mit der Arduino Plattform zugange. Unter anderem weil ESPs in Lua-Script zu programmieren ein Krampf ist.
Hab hier auch ein paar ganz billige 433Mhz Sende- und Empfangsmodule liegen. 90cent das paar. Will damit versuchen Funksteckdosen zu schalten und auch ein paar andere Spielereien. Auf dem Computerclub UA-cam Kanal wurde auch das SDR Modul verwendet um 433Mhz Wetterstationen auszulesen. Hab mir so eins auch gerade bei Gearbest für weniger als 7,-€ bestellt. Für Arduino gibts auch noch das hier:

My gate (its a couple of feet from car) opens by itself when im working on my car, i suspect someone is opening it on purpose when im around. wouldn't it be easier if you connected your remote to your bike's battery and shorted the button? or extended the remote button to the bike handle and stuck the remote on the bike permanently? or even easier, glue the remote to the bottom of the bike seat so you always know where it is? in any case just use the existing remote. cheaper, faster and easier.
+Ady Price You are right, it could be possible to do hat. There were a few reasons to do my way: We have only one remote and now, I can leave this one in our car. And I hope, I will be able to get it smaller than the original one. Because of humidity issues on a bike, I want also to be able to cover it completely with hot glue.
I have to admit, I had a third reason: I wanted to play around with the new technology of SDR radio and DDS and found, this is a good example to do that. I am just an engineer ;-)

went a simple way. bought an extra remote. solder a 2x0,25mm cable to the push contacts and added 3 push buttons on a side pannel. I know control main access + 2 garage door inside for less than 30euro in 20min. It runs on the remote control battery. just need to be replaced every few years.

I am working on decoding my fixed code garage door opener code. I get 41 bits of binary that looks like 10011011100110111001101110111001100110001 when decode in inspectrum. This cant be correct because the end part of the code does not repeat. There are 9 dip switches that are the following code - 101010110. I figure the 1001 = 1 and the 1011 =0 but that doesnt complete the code correctly towards the end. Any thoughts? A copy of the transmitted code can be found at github.com/jfender1/garagedooropener. I would just focus on copy what the transmitter transmits. You do not need to understand the content.
@@AndreasSpiess I can copy the code and replay it no problem. I have a hackrf one and a yardstick one. I want to understand how it works, what the code is and how it translates to the dip switches in the remote

Hello sir, thank u for the awesome video, I have a question, am trying to hack Somfy motor remote to open and and close the curtains via an esp8266, but the remote is using a "rolling code", my question is, will this method in the video work in such scenario?? By the way, the remote is using 433.42 frequency.
I do not understand a lot about these remote codes. This video was intended to show the different technologies, Its primary goal was not the "hacking".
For 433MHz, you get many self learning remotes. Maybe this is for you.

That is too much work. Also to find the frequency and code you could just buy or rent a handheld frequency Counter. I would try to purchase an extra remote.

And what about the RTL-SDR dongle? I made quite a few videos about this topic. Very interesting! But under the saddle of my Harley, a Pi would not be the right choice ;-)
Andreas Spiess You’re absolutely correct. You need the dongle to record. Once you recorded every button, replay is done only with the Pi. And a chip is better than having a Pi in your motorcycle. The only good thing is you can skip te demodulation part, which is the most difficult part.

No, the signal is not encrypted. And probably yes. I never used hackRF
