We visited India’s perfume capital, Kannauj to see how craftsmen make "attar," or natural perfumes using a centuries-old steam distillation method.

ATTARS are the soul and source of all perfumes in this world. Budget and Heavenly smell
Love attars. The only thing concerning to me is the decline, conditions / wages of the workers and cleanliness of these factories.

Gandhshastra that is science of Perfumery is found in India long before Mughal invasion.
Gandasara, a Sanskrit text from 12th century has methods to make different scents.
And Mughals invaded India in 16 century.
You had plastic surgery, nuclear weapons, aeroplane thousands of years ago, we know that.😂😂
@@ImranKhan-he8bd vase wo sahi kha rha h. By the way the father of medical science , medicine and surgery are from India that the person is know as sushurta and charak
@@ashoksinghal4626 Apparently " drip irrigation " was used by invaders in the desert for growing rose, khus etc and they brought it to India and made perfumes, while using the same technique to "introduce" Turk , Mongol and Arabic names too lol. No point educating stone age nuts who become Turks one day and Arabs the next .
@@ImranKhan-he8bdno not nuclear weapons. Only weapons 😅
Very good and useful video. Those like us who love PERFUMES and try to make it, are interested in watching more videos like this.

It's the proud of India 👍
I find it disgusting how the owner is in nice clothes, and looks like he makes good money from his attars, yet his employees are woking in such horrid conditions and their clothes are all dirty, no shoes, and obviously poor. If you're not going to increase pay, at least give these humans a better, cleaner working environment.
I agree, well said.
Agree. Looks like the owner is not from Kannauj itself, probably a Punjabi who's exploiting the workers there. It's shameful.
It is what it is.
I see Indian workers. Equality doesn’t exist like in the west. But these people don’t look malnourished at all.
They have the boss in the shirt who have the higher education.

Bought 25ml mitti attar, smell of rain, for $100. Shipped from Delhi, and delivered in California after 5 days. There’s a dominant smell of clay pots for a couple of seconds and then, nothing. Nothing. Like how your hopes of supporting an ancient craft and owning a decent perfume would smell like after being crushed; smell of clay followed by nothing. Maybe some technology must be incorporated into this so the workers don’t suffer so much, the owner don’t make profit from their suffering and some others’ sympathy, and the perfumes can meet this age’s standards.
I was shopping for a scent, came across this video, and it seemed like the best option; buying a unique perfume and supporting hardworking craftspeople. It wasn’t the best decision. I wouldn’t want to wear a garment made the same way it was 5k years ago. Why did I thought I would do that with a perfume?
Last, if you’re out shopping for a scent, try something that’s you, that makes sense, maybe something from New York or Grasse.
Hi, from where you brought. I too want to buy
You purchased from them?
who doesn't like the smell of that first rain....
I don't like
@@asisgayen8489 Than your father is fly
All I want to ask is are the workers getting paid good enough????
Nope, the max salary they get probably would be below 15000 rupees
Kanauj is producing since 5000 years
I just wanna know if they sell these attars online because I need it. I need it so damn much!!
Where can I buy this
May i know the name of the buiness?
We always support you 👍
I love seeing old traditions like this still exsisting. I just wish it was more popular and made more money - that workers made better money. This needs to become more popular and more widely known about - because it is worth it and supporting such an old tradition is worth it. Thigns like this need to be preserved.
Mitti ATTAR AND RUH KHUS ATTAR SMELLS LIKE.. AYURVEDIC MEDCINE
what about the smell of rain on saturn
I still use attar. Believe me or not I used those western perfumes. They are costly and sometimes pure synthetic.
Attar is pure natural and the perfume smells awesome. Western perfumes are based on alcohol, other side attar based on oil. Longest lasting perfume ever.
Yeah..western perfume often lost its essence and effect because of alcohol.
@@kalyanibadwaik2719 perfumes have alcohol in it because of the projection and sillage. A perfume has more projection and sillage than an attar. Attar is like pure version of perfume. In terms of longetivity on skin and on clothes attar has no competition it is the most potent of all the perfume, edp, edt, edf and colonge.
Where can i buy a real Attar? I live in Europe. 🙄
@@elisabeth400 Saudi Arabia and India are best place to buy
@@Must_77785 Thank you very much.
Incorporating the most basic of modern technology would make this process sooooooo much more consistent and so much easier on the workers. Leave it to India to still be working with Stone Age equipment.

The most difficult part is measuring the water? What?
I imagine that each crop of flowers has a different concentration of fragrance oil- depending on weather conditions. I notice that in my own garden. So every time figuring out the correct amount of water would be challenging.
