Something worth knowing when living in NYC is that your bell will get rung randomly, by people you don't know, it happens. Just think about it, anyone on the street can just walk up and ring it. You just need to be smart about it, which you were, and not buzz anyone in that you do not know or are not expecting. Make sure your door is locked at all times. I would definitely feel better, however, being you and knowing you have two added points of security (a video camera and a doorman). I've always lived in a brownstone without either, you just have to be careful.

10000% definitely stay cautious. As the true-crime podcast I listen to says, f**k politeness! If the worst thing that happens is you come off annoying but it keeps you safe, then that's what you have to do!!!! I'm scared of everything and literally lock myself in my house with an alarm system. Don't feel bad about it

Totally normal to be nervous. I will say as someone who’s lived here for more than a decade: random buzzes happen all the time, in all neighborhoods. Some people might even forget their keys and just buzz their neighbors until someone lets them in. Or sometimes they even hit the wrong apartment - i was away from the city for the past two weeks, and was buzzed twice (my building has an phone app where there’s a camera and a buzzer on the app). It happens but you’re lucky to have a doorman that can filter out any bad apples, that are extremely rare.

Brooke I completely agree about being scared. I am always very cautious and aware of my surroundings as a fellow young single woman. I feel like i’m insane because i do get so scared sometimes over typically nothing but always better to be safe then sorry. Hugs!

You are absolutely right in being careful and in your mind annoying to others. God gave you a brain and your using it! This is how you survive living by yourself in a city. Brooke I had almost the exact same experience last week with a strange man knocking on my door, literally piled my furniture in front of the door and slept with the lights on that night 🙃 never open the door for strangers ladies!!!!
Brooke i would react the exact same way!!! I've had a few run ins with men in cars/vans when i'm out walking and that genuinely makes me fear for my life, even when they don't stop the car. So i can't imagine how you felt in that situation!!! Honestly if i was you i would tell your security guys everything and make sure they understand the online following stuff because cyber stalking is soooooooo dangerous and your security matters most!!! So glad it was just a misunderstanding eventually, never feel like you overreact with things like that! Someone else commented it's better to be annoying than dead and that is so true!!

I live alone and last week a guy followed me on my run back into my apartment complex 😭 definitely shook me up but I am grateful I am able to live alone and support myself

My sister and I were living in our first apartment in college and this guy across the hall (who we had never met and was significantly older) was pounding on our door one evening screaming “they’re looking for the people that are smoking on our hall, just wanted to let y’all know that if it’s you they’re going to find out and I’ve been to jail before” and we weren’t smoking, we don’t smoke at all. And like an idiot I opened the door and got real sassy with him bc I didn’t want our apartment to be targeted and searched bc he was screaming but later realized that was a poor decision bc I didn’t know him or his intentions. Stay safe girl!

I recommend you to get a ring doorbell!! It has a camera so you can monitor your front door, i guess i it can give you the peace of mind you’re looking for☺️ I myself also live alone and have had random people stand in front of my apartment door for no reason, I remember seeing the shadow of someone’s feet one time, it was scary
I second this! Ring has a solution for apartments called the “peep hole camera” and it’s great for when you hear noises outside your door and want to monitor the situation

I doubt she can add things to the hallway of her apartment complex! She doesn’t own the hallway/door so they more than likely won’t let her add the ring doorbell
They make apartment friendly holders for the ring that don't require you to make any permanent changes! I think it's called Doorbell Boa
When I lived in an apartment I had a guy follow me from my car so my complex let me install the ring door bell in my hallway! It’s really just like 4 small holes in the wall that can be easily patched and painted over when removed. Just like hanging photos or whatever!

after the day i had at work in the ER yesterday todays vlog was much needed
that happened to me! a guy i went out with but then i was no longer seeing decided to come by my building uninvited and he buzzed, i told him to go away, and i guess he buzzed someone else or someone let him in. because, moments later he was pounding on my door, pushed me over to get through, broke down my shower curtain rod, ripped hooks off the wall, and basically just made a terrifying scene. He was drunk at like 9am. Luckily I had a girlfriend over and together we shoved him out. that was 11 years ago and I'm still afraid of my buzzer. So always better to be safe than sorry!

The apartment thing is 100000% real when you’re a girl and live alone! I live in a small walk up building so it’s always a bit scary but I have everything ready for any situation. Doorman buildings are usually very safe but I know the feeling. I also loved the cove sponsorship! I am the SAME WAY! I have these anxieties too but I don't get hard on myself because I don't let it rule my life (like you) and I'd rather be safe than sorry!
I had random flowers delivered to my door when I lived alone and no one who knew where I lived sent them so I got in my head that someone who had seen me on runs/walks left them and got spooked, I think it's important to try to be safe living alone no matter who you are 🤗❤️
As a single person who also lives alone...you did everything one should do. Like you said better safe than sorry. The one time you don't take the proper precautions is when something happens.
I live alone in the country area of Georgia but when I first moved here ... it did make me feel on edge at first but I’ve lived here for four years now & love it .. just take time to get used to your situation :)

I live in CA and my boyfriend's a firefighter and he's been gone for over a month and this has been my first larger chunk of time being home alone which is definitely an adjustment. I actually bought that door lock thing after i saw it in your vlog so thank you for sharing that I had no idea that existed before! If it makes you feel any better i've been sleeping with my side lamp on every night lol

living alone in a big city tip: get an addalock. I put it in my door every night and one morning my maintenance guy came unannounced to fix my shower and he has a key to get into my unit, but the addalock was still in and he couldn't even open the door. just helps with peace of mind

That used to happen to me and my flatmates in Spain. People would usually just buzz to get into the building, not necessarily looking to get into your place. But you did the right thing. Stay safe xx
Please read! Don’t feel bad about bothering your doorman! That had to be scary for you. I also had a scary situation happen and the cops couldn’t even do anything because he didn’t harm me or damage my vehicle.
I have always been taught to take care of myself and be aware of my surroundings, and last winter I was leaving Starbucks and saw someone following me. Long story short, he tried to get into my vehicle but I was quick enough to lock the doors before he could get in. Come to find out, he had been charged with assault and criminal confinement using a vehicle only months before he followed me. I still think of that guy every day. I thank GOD my infant wasn’t with me, I had my phone to get a picture of him, and my gun to protect myself in case he got inside.
Make sure to take care of yourself, be aware of your surroundings. 🥰

just want to bring to your attention be careful taking migraine meds while on birth control!! it GREATLY increases your risk for stroke. i’m going through this right now with my doctor and trying to find a treatment for my migraines. just be careful and maybe talk to the doctor about that!!
Hey girly, I just wanna say I COMPLETELY support the being annoying about your safety aspect! The summer of 2017 I was home alone and my roommates left a window unlocked and I actually woke up to a man in my bedroom (he didn't see me in bed), thankfully he was someone who didn't want to hurt anyone and ran out but since that experience I am extremely annoying! The includes triple checking locked doors and windows and needed updates on when people would be home and wouldn't, better safe than sorry!
