Shogun: Lord Toda Buntaro Displays His Master Archery To Anjin-San In Anjiro, Japan

- Shogun: Anjin-San (Pilot-Major John Blackthorne played by Richard Chamberlain) hosts Lord Toda Buntaro (Hideo Takamatsu), Lady Toda Mariko (Yoko Shimada), Usagi Fujiko-San (Hiromi Senno), and a house servant at his home in Anjiro, Japan. Lord Buntaro explains that his archery is more accurate than using a musket or pistol. Anjin-San toasts Lord Buntaro, and tries to get him drunk so that his “steady hand” is affected by the Sake. Lord Buntaro displays his Master Archery to Anjin-San, shooting 3 arrows in the same place on Anjin-San’s chosen right post with pinpoint accuracy. Anjin-San asks his consort, Fujiko-San, to leave the arrows in the post forever, to remind him of a Master Archer.

There is a new Shogun coming out on the FX Channel on February 27, 2024, but honestly, I do not see how any version of Shogun can top this amazing production of excellent cinematography. This was made way before WIFI even existed.
In the book, Buntaro and his wife were at odds, which greatly distressed him. When they got into an argument over his suspicions of the pilot and his wife, she became angry and dared her husband to kill her. He went into a rage, and since he could not bring himself to do that, he took his sword and swung it as hard as he could into a big wooden post. It went nearly a foot deep into the hard wood. Impressive.

Dude, feudal japanese would actually lose their minds if they were introduced to the british longbow before the gun. Either a shame or a blessing that by the time the British reached them, the longbow was long replaced by the musket.

The argument that could be made (Anjin-san) does not) is that it is easier to teach untrained recruits how to fire a musket through drill. Archery at this level takes years of practice.

Even more basic archery, I.e. with the English war bow/longbow took a lifetime of training to develop not only the skill but also the strength required just to draw the strong bow….and indeed is was compulsory for certain groups of people to train with the bow from a certain age onwards. Thus, even though the French armies suffered terribly from the English archer again and again over decades, they where not able to produce a comparable force.
The main weapon of the early samurai was the bow. Nobody else was allowed to use and train with real warlike weapons, so when the time came, the musket was the weapon of choice to arm the peasantry due to the rather minimal training required….
This is the really relevant point, and one of the main reasons firearms proved superior on the battlefield. Anybody could be trained to shoot a musket. At that time in history, they were pretty inaccurate anyway, so you didn't need special skill to aim them. But the discipline of having 200 men firing them off, and then reloading while a second line fires, is extremely formidable. It's also intimidating, because it's really loud, and the wounds it inflicts are horrifying. It can break a cavalry charge pretty easily, by spooking the horses if nothing else.
Yes, and that argument could have been made for later. But with 500 existing archers against 100 riflemen, after Buntaro's display, there was no argument.

@@jeffanon1772 he was a man of his time. Yes, scary. But also had honor. He was actually showing Blackthorn. There’s a lot more to learn. They ended up mutually respecting each other, but that was after a death. They both grieved together, but separate.
I found it interesting that after having beaten his wife bloody, Buntaro was honor bound to apologize to Blackthrone, not for the abuse, but for having disturbed the tranquility of his house.
They all are, especially Yabu.
I saw this show as a kid on TV after I read the book. This is the scene I remember the best.
In this episode, Buntaro is uncivilized while Anjin is gracious. Certainly Mariko noticed

I was actually hoping the new series would show this scene and highlight his complete awareness and memory of his surroundings, with his ability to shoot point blank at an unseen target. They left it slightly vague in the new one.

The type of musket that was in Japan at the time the bow and arrow was faster. The only time the gun was effective was a mass volley

A better ending might have been to find that Toranaga was found pinned to the post. The body left in place to remind Anjin of a master archer.
The remake hits kinda different.
Shogun was the first book I've read. I like James Clavell's books. I'm going to buy other books like Tai - pan, Gai - Jin, Noble House, etc. I'm going to complete my collection.

In the recent Shogun Blackthorne doesn’t see the Arrows until the Earthquake and he is returning home to help.Edit : it also didn’t make any sense to me I was thinking they came from somewhere else, now it makes sense.
Best scene ever. Buntaro took all what was posible . He saw trough the ploy with the sake. The physical extorsion as he sat down. He know , he lost the battle. But not his honour.

Ridiculous. By the year 1600 the Japanese were arguably ahead of Europeans in musketry tactics and had been manufacturing them for fifty years. By the time depicted in this show it would have been 25 years since Nobunaga won the the battle of Nagashino by using musket volleys to defeat cavalry.
True, it may not be entirely historically accurate, but that's Hollywood. Even so, it gave us a wonderful look into Feudal Japan, and the caste system there. I agree that some liberties were taken, but this was many Westerners first introduction to Japan via Television. Still, I hope you enjoy the videos. God bless! 👍🎌
@@theshogunchannel when firearms were introduced into Japan, they did not change. They modified them to have them work in the hands of the samurai. But the design never changed.

Japanese armies were one of the very best in the world at the time. They had years of experience and developement during Sengoku Jidai.

@@theshogunchannel I'm not sure why they would rewrite Blackthorne as he is. I know in interviews the directors have emphasised they wanted historical accuracy, and the thrust of the new series seems far more weighted towards the japanese characters. Perhaps they felt a white man in Japan would not have got to anywhere near the elevated status in that period. it doesn't explain Blackthornes lack of wits. He is a pilot and as such is clever, can read, perform complex maths, and speaks multiple languages, no fool at all. In the new series they have taken out the village being instructed to teach him to speak Japanese and because of this alone he is isolated much more, removed from the conversations, unable to interact, mocked and abused. To me Mariko seems the main role, which is maybe what they had in mind when they wrote it. After a strong start I'm now at the point where I don't want to watch any more, which is HUGELY dissapointing for someone who has read the book 8 or 9 times since he was a teenager
@@FourMileSurvival Agreed. I think the casting choice is also contributing to this. He doesn't have the same 'urgency' as Chamberlain or hint of witty intelligence. The two people who adapted the show have gutted much of the emotional high points too.

This version of this scene is a bit tamer then what happens in the novel, but the 2024 version takes it a bit too far and makes Blackthorne more of a buffoon.
in the novel, there's a cultural clash due to the fact that both Buntaro and Mariko are vegetarians, the different dining and hospitality customs between two cultures, and language barrier that causes some more non-violent minor chaos or misunderstandings as more sake is consumed. But both novel and 1980 version both managed to keep Buntaro and Blackthorne treating each other with some degree of civility.
In the 2024 version, Buntaro is openly mocking Blackthorne even though he is a guest at Blackthorne's house, and Blackthorne's like completely oblivious. Was this authentic Japanese custom to mock your host?
I won't go into the details on the conversations about Mariko's family history, both 1980 and 2024 sort of condensed this part.

@@theshogunchannel Yes, that was also stupid because in the novel, he tragically was in love with her deep down but she was not having it. So shooting at her contradicts this. Again, the screenwriters for this version are leaving quality for cool shots. It's holding this version from being truly great.

@@MarklovesAngels you can definitely feel that in the 2024 show Buntaro still tragically loves Mariko, and I felt like him shooting at her with her standing completely still was supposed to prove that Buntaro's skill is unmatched even while drunk, and even Mariko knows this. I do agree they took it too far to make it more dramatic.

This is original scene which is way better then new shogun which copied this scene and made it crap
I just got to this part of the 2024 version. It was strange to see the newer version rely on what is now a cheap cliché slow-motion VFX "oh look how close it gets to _____'s face" to try and up the tension. This version just relied on Shimada's acting.

Yes, it was very intense the narative was more realistic, gives reason for Buntaro hitting her afterwards.
not at all...here Blackthorne is already coming to terms with japanese culture. In the 2024 it is already sixth episode and still a whinning gaijin.....(sigh)

Both in this series and in the novel, Blackthorne very quickly locks into Japanese culture because he not only sees the wisdom of it (especially given that he's kind of stuck there) but knows what from his own culture will dovetail, e.g. telling Buntaro he'll leave the arrows in the post, presenting the Lady Ochiba with a perfect camellia on her birthday, et al.
