  • Our guest this week has been hailed as one of jazz guitar’s top emerging players. NYC-based Nir has just released his second album, aptly named II, which is already drawing praise for its daring mix of jazz harmony, ensemble improvisation, and spacey ambient textures. In addition to his solo work, Nir has lent his 6-string wizardry to such contemporary artists as Erykah Badu, John Mayer, Chaka Khan, the Dave Matthews Band, Esperanza Spalding, and Meshell Ndegeocello. The 2005 graduate of Berklee College of Music won the guitar department’s Jimi Hendrix Award, so it’s no surprise he infuses his bebop-drenched lines with growling Strat-into-Marshall tones, as you'll hear in our three episodes.
In this week's first episode, Nir describes his non-traditional approach to soloing over changes and how he works out phrases on the neck. He accompanies his tutorial with in-depth playing examples, so if you feel frustrated or stymied by scale patterns, this may be exactly what you need to break free from standard fretboard dogma.
