- Second part of the 52-minute highlights programme on the GrandSlam Standard leg in Tokyo, JPN, on 11 March 2012. Produced by WDSF Communications in collaboration with Japan DanceSport Federation.
Part-I. The Tango originated in N Africa by imitating Flemingo dance. Then the migrate workers brought it to S America. The guacho (cowboys) drove their herd to town and got paid. They grab those canteeno girls to dance the imitation Flemingo on the unpaved streets, forcefully and awkwal but turn and walk swftly. This new dance was called a dance-with-stops, theTango was born in mid 1800s.
Part-VI. The European tango also has evolved and standardized by the Britts to become one of the modern ballroom dances. Its female head and shoulder posture (turned away& lean back) was adopted by all other ballroom standard dances, e.g. Foxtrot, Waltz and Quicksteps. While in north America the tango dance was slowed down and strated to separate to perform indiviual moves. This modified tango style went across the Pacific and beacme popular in Asia before WW II. The American tango was born.
Part-V. This new dance went across the ocean to north America and started to spread too. By the end of WW I, the whole world knows tango the gaucho dance.
Back in the cities in south America, the street tango dancing was long gone, replaced by closely held tango in the narrow spaces between the tables in the tarvens. The couples could not move far nor turn quickly, so they slowed down and soften the moves and the music did likewise. This tarven tango became the Argentine tango of today.
Part-IV. Some rich young men later joined in and learned this new dance-with-stops.
In the late 1800's, some rich young south American men went to Europe for higher education, they introduced this new tango dance to the local entertaiment circle, it spred like wild fire. Every tarven and theather and ballroom started to dance tango, the gaucho style. The music also has changed to similar to military style marching beats and the dance has many stoccato movements. But none of them danced alike.
Part-III. The surge of migrate workers kept pouring into south America, but not enough farm and ranch works were vailable, so these excess young male workers hung out in the cities, near the cheap redlight districts. They were very frustrated, often drunk and angry, some started to dance the new tango dance on the street without a partner, when the tarven's music was heard on the streets. Then there were more of them dance in formations, on the street, without patners. It became a fad.
Part-II. But the sweaty, smelly (no bath after a long cattle drive) and half-drunk gauchos still wear chaps, they were just too much to be so closely held. Thus the girls lean back and turn their head to the side when the gauchos try to kiss them while dancing. Now their dance does not look like flemingo any more, not even close, it's a forceful couple dance with quick turns and fast walk and tight hold. This was the dawn of Tango dance, the dance-with-stops.
Maria, you probably did not read Part-VII of my comments. Argentine tango became the smooching erotical tarven dance, American tango allows lots of separations and slower softer moves. While International Standard (ballroom) tango retain some original gaucho tango dance forms and spirits, like these top young amature dancers in this video.
Part-VII. The standard European tango kept the very original spirit and forms of the Argetine gaucho dance but all other styles are being danced world wide. Todays Argentine tango look entirely different from both European (standard) and American tango styles, but they all are enjoyable to dance and to watch. Hope this stop the arguments.
Just a word: this is not AMERICAN Tango, but International Standard Tango ;-)
