Mk, a city focused around the car. Sure there are cycle ways but unless you're a local you will get lost. And its impossible to leave MK without venturing onto a 70mph dual carriageway.
Better signage will help, but air quality is great in MK thanks to little traffic problems and convenient cycling shortcuts. You can also leave using these things called buses and trains
Are there connections into MK from nearby towns or villages too? I’m really hoping that various plans in Somerset pan out and we get some connections between towns and villages. Country roads are lovely apart from a lot using the national speed limit and being used by HGVs and other vehicles at speed.
We couldn't agree more with this Simon. We all know those winding country roads too much and drivers can occasionally play on both sides of the law with regards to the speed limit. Cycling infrastructure between villages would not only improve the wellbeing of its population, but also get people healthier!
@@FullychargedUK Hi. I just want to ask if there is any progress after coordinating with Milton Keynes Council?I would love to know whats going to happen in MK redways in the future
Not sure my handle bars would fit into those bike lockers. What's the parking infrastructure like generally around MK? Can you park at pretty much every destination?
@@cubbykovu8955 Great! Nice to know. How do you find the red ways in MK? Do you thinkmit needs more improvements? How is the MK council doing to improve it?
@@onebicycle3772 I love them to bits they arent perfect there are some dodgey road crossing bits and some of it is very old and worn BUT I went to york two years ago and it was horrendous to ride in XD
Maybe that’s because it’s also really easy to drive round MK. In The Netherlands high bike use is sometimes related to the bike being the quickest option. Eg. The pioneering Groningen traffic plan made cars go the long way round and bikes direct. UK newtowns were designed completely around the car in the 60s and sadly most other towns had the heart ripped out of them for the car. Result: 2021 Urban (and countryside) UK is a complete traffic sewer.
@Greig Smith you are completely wrong. Please stop regurgitating tired old myths and propaganda promoted by the anti-cycling infrastructure lobby, which have long since been debunked. The walking and cycling infrastructure in MK does get used by many many people who would otherwise not have the opportunity to cycle safely. You often see children, families and elderly people, as well as commuters using the cycle routes. It’s not perfect by any means, many of the redways are desperately in need of resurfacing due to lack of funding, and as @Mike Owen rightly points out, the city was designed primarily around the car, not the bicycle, which accounts in large part for the difficultly in getting people out of their cars and onto bikes, especially compared to somewhere like Holland for example. But as a long time resident I can assure you that MK’s traffic free redways and leisure routes are used by many people, and the experience of cycling in MK is blissful when compared to almost any other town or city in the UK. If you ask almost anyone from MK you’ll discover that most them love living in the city, they’re very proud of MK, and the redways and leisure routes are one of the things that makes living in the city very special.
@battletruck100 I’ve lived here for 31 years, which is handy, as I know where all the adult education centres are located if you need a helping hand with your written English skills. Let me know if I can assist.
thats because they built it with the car in mind. They didn't build it with cyclist or people who do not drive. Go to scandanavia, holland. They will tell you how to build a city for cyclist
@@moyolinux 😂 It’s the largest and most comprehensive segregated cycling network in the UK. MKs practically famous for its Red Ways. You can literally get anywhere in the city and not share a road with MV’s. But it wasn’t built with cyclists in mind. Ok. Yet the beards of the LCC go on and on and on about segregation and how once built, cars will be abandoned and the modal share will change dramatically to cycling over driving. We’re not Dutch. We don’t live in Holland
The reason I DON'T cycle is because I fear that my bicycle might be stolen, parts stolen from it or damaged. ALSO electric bikes and eScooters have become a scourge. Meat-Heads ride around MK on pavements or shared spaces such as Redways at breakneck speeds.
Why no thought for pedestrians or community life? Why an American car- centric grid system which is totally inorganic and dead.?..Asphalt and concrete. If pedestrians aren't hemmed in by car parks they risk being mown down by cyclists.
is this guy serious, Milton keynes is the worse cycling area you can think of. The signage is appalling, you are constantly getting lost. Because the the path is covered by bush you cannot look around for a marker point to find out whee your going. The underpass looks like a scene from nightmare on elm st. Its scary, may I suggest you look at the Scandinavian / dutch countries who can tell you how to build a cycle city
I’m glad MK is getting more recognition. Thanks :)
I'm from mk and love cycling around all the different lakes.
We couldn't agree more. What a lovely place to cycle, especially with all of the red-cycle lanes.
Nice one! #getaroundmk 💚🚴♀️💚
I visited some friends and family in milton keynes, it's really beautiful
Beautiful to be riding bikes around!

Well said. It is good to have some honesty in the comments.
I have always biked to work for all my working life as I don't own a car. Never have. I have a ebike and can get to work in 20 mins.i live in mk too
Great to see good bike infra, nice bike btw,

Germany is making MK look basic. Went to Munich so spectacular
Of course, Germany is ahead of the game with regards to infrastructure.

Are the council of MK planning to improve more of the existing red ways?
That is a question for our partner store in Silverstone, but we hope so!!

This be another Milton Keynes. The one i know has crap, meandering indirect bike lanes that go nowhere in particular; & everyone drives everywhere.
Thanks for the truth.
MK without a Car I feel trapped, I wouldn’t know where to find a red way?
I needed a map to get me started when I was a teenager with no car but I quickly learnt the routes. Best place I’ve known to cycle.

MK . a town built around bike thieves also
Is that right?
Houten is what happens when town planning is centred around cycling, Milton Keynes is almost the opposite!
