    Additional Tip: A lot of newer exterior doors have adjustable thresholds that can be tweaked by ~4 adjustment screws across the top of the threshold. If your new sweep fits too tight, try bottoming those screws out in the threshold first to see if that makes enough space. If it ends up being too loose, adjust the threshold screws accordingly.

    To fix a hump in a non-adjustable threshold that has raised wood directly under where the door sits, a straight-edge and a belt sander work wonders.

      If that door goes to a hallway, that space might be on purpose. Many apartment buildings rely on being able to suck air from the hallway when handling exhaust. You might find your bathroom or kitchen fans don't work as well if you cover that space under your door.

    Any suggestions about what to do when you need to fill the gap under the door, but the carpet on the interior is too plush and prevents the door from opening easily if there is a sweep on it?
    Don't want to change the door because it's original to the house, and don't particularly want to change the carpet since it's brand new.

    • @Myarmsasleep
      @Myarmsasleep Рік тому +3

      The only way a threshold and door shoe will seal properly is if the threshold sits proud of the flooring by a minimum of a 1/4”. You need to raise your threshold enough to clear the carpet. You can buy an aluminum threshold at the home centers and install it over the existing threshold. There is more involved but that’s the jist of it. You’ll also have to cut your door so the shoe/sweep has enough room to fit now that there’s a new threshold height

    • @Myarmsasleep
      @Myarmsasleep Рік тому +2

      Tip: before you start you should mark the height of the door on the top inner jamb on both sides. When you go to cut your door you’ll already have a mark to measure how much you need to cut from the bottom.

    Hi! New house and the old threshold is about 1/2inch away from door. I think they messed up when they installed new floors. Needless to say huge gap between door and threshold. I bought the adjustable threshold. But seems like I’m going to have to cut off quite a bit of the bottom of the door. To fit over the wooden part. And enough for plastic fins to be reinstalled after door cut. Is that the normal way. It adjusts from 1 1/8 inch to 1 3/8 inch. Will people trip over this? Or is it meant to be flush to floor level? Thanks :-)

    Do you have suggestions on how to secure double doors so they are less easy to kick in? Mine has plastic tabs that push into a hole at the top and bottom of the door. The tabs slide down gradually over time. So I tried to remove them and replace them with a metal latch, but was unable to find one that fit. I thought about installing a removable security bar behind the dummy door to help prevent it from being kicked in. But maybe it's just time to upgrade my 1963 metal front doors?

  • @LuminairPrime
    @LuminairPrime Рік тому

    I'm surprised to see a pro recommend a U-shape for an exterior door. It will capture water and rot the door. At most there should be an L-shape with the slope running to the outside, and an I-shape sweep in front on the outside. Realistically, these things are consumable, so you should also only recommend something that can be replaced easily. Some of these bottoms have a channel for removeable weather stripping.
