Great video! Watched it back at the time of posting and just watched again. You inspired me to do the same to my 2350. Took apart the power supply to find huge clumps of dust. Yikes. It had not been cleaned in the 10 years I have owned it but still runs great!

I never had luck with samsung hard drives ... I'm avoiding them now ... They are very fragile when it comes to work with a failing power supply. All my seagates have survived. But the samsung one, nope. I tried another Samsung (with a new power supply of course) And I have not lasted a long time before he was corrupting everything.
I still have it on a box somewhere, but he is not able to do anything more than noise. He is not even recognized by the bios anymore ... I don't know maybe bad luck.

I just recently modernized one my parent's dell dimension desktop that was very similar to this one. It had onboard sata so there was not need for a RAID card like the one that you showed in your video. I added an extra gig of RAM bumping it up to 1.5GB and a 256MB AGP video card, this PC works great now on Windows XP. I also added a DVD-RW with lightscribe and a 500GB hard that was from their newer computer that failed due to a random BSOD that I could not seem to troubleshoot.

Thank you uxwbill, yes, orange it is, the one blinking orange is power, now I noticed that there is one for power (left) and another for the hard drive (right). In the back only the internet connection (yellow) is blinking.

The mounts broke on my 2350, So I moved the entire assembly from a B110 into it, and moved a stripped 3000's heatsink(copper) to the b110. The 2350 with a 2ghz celeron doesn't even get warm anymore, the b110 still gets warm but less than before. The copper hs with the shroud and everything are about $10-$20 on ebay, and well worth it in my mind, though my 2350 just has the bigger aluminum one.

I think it's fine to restore a $20 compputer for the fun of it. I don't think it makes sense when people spend money on parts to fix it especially when the total cost of parts is more than the value of the computer. fixing a tape deck with 7 dollars worth of belts for example is fine. Most people who do this have parts laying around so it doesn't really cost them anything.

I had the same Issue ! I was inspired by you're own video to make our on sever (running a very slimmed down copy of xp as it does some gaming hosting as well). I had so Many Issues with my VT6421A card. It would get so far to install and it would just bottle out. With a read/write error. The hard drive I used is a Hitachi HDS721010CLA332. So I purchased a new motherboard and used a dual core E2160 CPU and 2gb of ram I've had left around and now it runs better than before (random rebooting now).

All 4K drives report their size as 512. This is called 512e (512-byte sector Emulation). Internally it uses 4K sectors, but externally it uses 512-byte sectors. They do this because everything that uses hard drives (computers, DVRs, digital cameras, video game consoles, etc.) expect 512 byte sectors, often times that value is hard-coded. Until the software industry catches up, 4K sector drives will continue to operate this way. Eventually they will release 4Kn (or 4K native) drives.

Nice job on cleaning that computer. When you say "hand washed" the motherboard, you mean with water? I have a Dimension 2400 I just got from my wife's uncle. It's just very dusty and it needs more than just a "compressed air" cleaning. Just wondering what's a better way to clean the insides of computers??

Great video mate, I serviced my neighbours one of these recently, put 1gb ram in up from the stock 256mb! and ran XP very nicely, I know what you mean with the junk fans Dell use even my last Dell I bought brand new in 2008 lasted me 2 years, one fan died and the other fans were noisy as hell towards the end, the cpu and drives live on in m current system though :)

@3:05 I don't know if you ever figured this out, but if you look at the green baffle do you see the 2 raised triangle sections near the middle. Those are to be depressed by squeezing them to release 2 clips where the green baffle meets the fan housing close to the bottom and that will make it rise easily it is not (or should at least shouldn't) bee binding on that edge.

How to work the green shroud:
Pull up on it while holding the fan in place.
    Swivel it out of place.
Dont worry, the first time I worked on a Dell like this, I couldnt get it either.

I have had a few of these from the curb, or wherever. Most of them had the hipro psu's, but some had the lite-on, and newtons(delta). Most of the time I get a JMC/Datech fan, is loud, or burnt. other times, I get Delta, or NMB fans and they work. Most of them worked fine, so kept them, or gave them to people I know, that can,t afford to get a new computer. These dells were good, today's might not be so good.

Bill, How did you wash them exactly? Like.... I've had some PC parts before that I'd love to take some kind of cleaner too... Simply blowing it off with compressed air just doesn't do any good...
I saw the video with the dish washer, Not gonna try it simply because my dishwasher is super expensive. But what are some good ways to "clean" system parts, Such as really dusty fans, and boards.

The fans in Dells were awful back then. Up until I just graduated from highschool, I worked on the computers at my school. Many of them were dell optiplexes, the slim-line with funky odd shaped fans. They would fail and sound like a jet engine. That was on top of all the other problems they always developed, names power supply, and motherboard capacitor failures.

Silicon Image cards have trouble with older systems? Interesting. All I know is that I tested out and upgraded the BIOS on a Dawicontrol DC-154 (w/ Sil3114) using a trusty old Asus P2L97-DS. That's not as old as a PPro job of course, but plenty old enough by my standards.
BTW, any clue whether one of these old 1.5Gb/s jobs can run a 6 Gb/s drive?

I have had many WD drives fail as soon as got them but this seems to be a issue with them recently guessing due to all the stuff going on in Japan with weather so I cut them slack and am waiting to see if QC improves over time . The other thing Windows ME had a big issue with memory handling which never got fixed as far as I know of had one machine that liked it ran perfect a old HP the functions all worked well even hibernation mode worked flawlessly but sadly that machine did not have usb ports or a agp slot so it was limited in what it could do it was a great system for my son for 10yrs till he grew out of it got it at a computer shop for only $10 it had been struck by lighting blew the memory stick and modem simply replaced those two things and bang booted right up.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that absolutely hates when people zip tie things inside a computer, especially in cases that don't have a side window so people can see in the computer. Just use some rubber bands. I can understand using some when you have a window to make things look nicer, but on a normal machine it is a pain in the ass and stupid.

yeah you are right that would solve the problem.. although I am pretty advanced in computers, I don't like fooling around with the Bios, well.. unless I back it up first that is.. I flashed it to A02 a while back and I dont think there is another update for it, but, it would seem to me I could modify the Bios before I flash it, and I could turn off that detection
I have a new fan in it, but it is a 2 pin, not a 3 pin like the 2300 requires.. I would never run it without a CPU fan, :-)

@1972FordF150 They should work. One of them will be defaulted to the lowest speed module. If they are the speed then no worries. It's usually best to have identical ram modules, but sometimes it doesn't matter. You just gotta keep an eye out say one stick requires a different voltage and stuff like that. I say just pop that sucker in and see what happens... just be ready for an explosion or black hole if it doesn't work. But seriously just give it a shot. If things not stable you will know why.

They are fine even with Windows 7, but you need 2-3GB of RAM memory and a discrete graphics card with at least 128MB of VRAM in order to watch UA-cam. The integrated chips in those machines are awefull so you gotta have a real, but a very cheap separate graphics card.

I find WD very temperamental, my last had disk was fine, it was brand new, lasted a week, then splat, it just failed so I sent it back and they tracked the issue, fixed it, sent me it back, and it only just failed after 5 years of very rough service, so even though they're touchy, they do sometimes work!

mind you you HAVE to have a REAL made in japan Teac branded drive to do any sort of raw mode playing with (like commodore 64 or apple II discs or even single sided hard sectored PC floppies) any others will just fail. Even the 1.2mb high density Teac drives still have a hard sector (hole in the media) IR sensor for such things. That and most of them are totally working after all this time, damn good drives.

I'd have to disagree with that. There's no problem with zip ties if it matches the color scheme of the computer, and you can't always just tuck them away, hence why they get used in the first place..
I am a perfectionist, and while loose cables don't hurt anything, I love having a desktop with clean cable management. If you guys don't, good for you. I'm a PC tech so I always have a box cutter and pliers on hand.. what kind of computer guy doesn't? And you seriously consider pliers a luxury?? They're a dollar!!! C'mon man.

    • @WaybackTECH
      @WaybackTECH 10 років тому

I'm not sure what it means, but I agree with pretty much everyone. Zip ties I have a love/hate relationship with. It is nice to take the time make the cables nice and neat, it is not however fun to undo that niceness when changing the motherboard, hard drive or even the power supply. I also don't think it is really necessary to make the cables "look nice" in a case without a window. As long as you can tuck them somewhere to keep them out of the way of hitting fans, it works just as good. Rubber bands dry out and fall into pieces into the bottom of the case which is really my only issue with them.

@@jackmcdonald8355 I'm glad I saw your comment. Yes, Pentium IVs are capable* of running the latest Windows OS.
*only the later revisions with the NX bit, which are only the socket 775 ones. I know I read somewhere with a kernel patch it would be theoretically possible to do so on an older 478 based unit, but I really don't see any real reason why anyone would actually want to do such an unholy thing. The 32 bit Pentium IVs (including and especially the ones with hyperthreading) are very suited to office tasks within Windows XP, so any new feature 8/8.1/10 brings would more than likely be unusably slow.
My most recent and longest active P4 build is a HP D530 small form factor that has a HT capable processor, 4 gigabytes of RAM, and it's original 80 GB Seagate Barracuda hard drive. It's been pushed to its limit running Windows 7… it's surprisingly not bad as long as you give the thing a few minutes to load everything first.

Nice video! But I believe that zip ties are God's present to computer maniacs! Use them all the time!
Best thing ever, after sliced bread!

For your average computer user it would be fine. If you want to check your email and play facebook games. If you can get it for free to $20 that would be bout what its worth. Even though it works you could find computers for probably 2008-2009 that people are giving away by now. People buy faster CPUs and more RAM and in the end they don't use even half the power.

What size fan can fit in the front, behind the bezel?

I have no idea. I never saw the need for any additional cooling in one of these systems. There's enough room than an 80mm fan _should_ fit, but it won't be able to do a whole lot and may hinder more than help by simply being in the way.

Those Western Digital green drive were worst drives and the biggest mistakes they ever made what I heard.

I've only had lots of reliability issues with the 512 byte-per-sector WD Green drives. The Advanced Format models have been fine.

I bought a similar drive, a 2tb green power drive and it was DOA. So i went with a new WD black.

I've washed a couple and one of them wasn't completely dry, so it would not turn on. From my experience, leave it a good 24hrs to dry in a open space.
