Penn State ready for spring football
Franklin clarified a certain aspect of the offseason, with three new coordinators joining the team this offseason. The coaches' changes are more about naming plays and organizing their systems to help teach them to players.
"If we hired these guys and they just came in and dropped their playbook, then we'd start installing and teaching to get those things done. Where I think it was almost painful is sitting in those rooms and grinding for hours about, what is in Penn State's best interest? Our players best interest? Not what you were comfortable doing [elsewhere]. There's an opportunity for, say Coach Kotelnicki, to clean some things up to call and term this to put us in the best position to be teachers," Franklin said.
Moving Abdul Carter to defensive end
Franklin also explained the move of linebacker Abdul Carter to defensive end.
"It's kind of interesting, right? I remember when we recruited Abdul, I thought he was a defensive end. Abdul and dad were adamant that he's a linebacker. The reality is we just wanted him in our program. This wasn't really something from us. This was Abdul, who wanted to make this move, I think for a number of reasons. We lost some defensive ends that were highly productive. We feel really good about the current room. But being able to inject Abdul into that room is going to be positive for us as well. He was on the bubble of struggling to keep his weight at linebacker, him and Kobe [King]. His body was telling him he could make the move if he needed and wanted to, and there's an opportunity there. This is going to be a win-win for everybody.

I like Franklin. I think he’s great for PSU. Would I rather win more? 100% but let’s get behind this team and help it happen.

Franklin couldn’t coach a HS team. He has no value added. As a PA resident, I’m appalled that some of my taxes pay the salary of this moron.

I really really hope our receivers step up this year. And if we don’t see a big improvement we need to get a new receivers coach.

It really just hit me. Manny was great hire. Joe Moorhead was. Brent Pry was reliable. Yurcich was not. The Special Teams were reliable for years. Just seems Yurcich was a snake oil salesman. That hire killed us at a critical time, along with sub standard play at some positions. EVERYONE bought into Yurcich beforehand, analysts, reporters, fans, etc. Franklin hits more than he misses. He’s a really good HC. I see him trending upward. Good things await us!

Maybe Franklins motive is to outlast all the great coaches that will and are leaving the sport, so that potentially he can get into a playoff game finally.
It’s shocking how bad a sideline coach he is, and more shocking that the WE ARE Nation excepts his record against top 10 teams.
Now comes an expanded playoff, and if Franklin gets this team in, all. The WE ARE followers will come out of the woodwork hailing this guy as fantastic. All the while guys like Saban are walking past multiple trophy’s at their homes from knowing the game better.
Name one coach that has been successful as a head coach that came outta Penn State under Franklin. Moorehead got fired, and I’m sure doesn’t have anything good to say about Franklins skills as a coach, Diaz RAN AWAY and it looked like he couldn’t wait to leave….Tell me anyone that’s gone public and praised Franklins coaching skills.

Never say never!!! I obviously understand till now he hasn't, but he is still a young coach, that's a fact and he already has way over 100 wins, that's definitely not easy to do, seeing as he has coached in the SEC and Big Ten!!! WE ARE

For those complaining about not winning big games, I'd like to know who they could have hired that would be appreciably better? A hot assistant? Kalen DeBoer? Dan Lanning? Neither of them were coming. So sink a huge payout to Franklin after firing him and then hire a new big name coach for more big bucks? Get real. Penn State is a very, very good team with the potential most years to be a Top 10 team. Can we find something else to complain about?

@@whofan1967 PSU is the same team without him. He offers no value added. Tired of using my tax dollars to pay this loser of a coach. The point is not who would they hire. That’s a different issue. They have the dollars to get someone to take them to the next level. The point is why do you reward incompetence? He certainly has had adequate opportunities to win a meaningful game and has failed miserably time and time again. He makes absolutely stupid and incredulous comments like I don’t get involved calling plays. He supposed to manage his coordinators and when they screw up, step in, not to continually follow the script to disaster. He lacks the acumen to adapt and compensate for the dynamic and changing circumstances on the field. If he were a company commander, his men would all be massacred. He has clearly demonstrated he can not do the job, at a level to win a championship. The longer this poser stays the less relevant PSU will become.

@goairborne3114 They've had years when they we one play away from a 4 team CFP. And I don't know if you've heard of Saquon Barkley or Micah Parsons, but they're pretty good. If Justin Fields had stayed, it would have been a whole different story. I don't want to start over and be 7-6 again. Remember Nebraska? Miami? Hiring a new coach is fools gold at this point. Take your Top 10-12 team, and take your chances in the expanded playoff. At this point, NIL is more important than coaching anyway, and he can't control that.
