The altimeter in non-GPS ABC watches uses the barometric pressure to determine altitude. A pressure change of 1 hPa (millibar) near sea level equates to an altitude change of 27 ft (8.3 m). So a swing of +/- 4 hPa would amount to a total range of about 200 ft. Proper use of the altimeter requires you to calibrate it to a known altitude before going on an outing. When you're hiking you can calibrate it to a trail sign that shows the current elevation. When you're on the road you can calibrate it to the elevation on a highway sign. This is how all barometric pressure based altimeters work. Regarding the compass, did you set the magnetic declination for your area? This is so the compass shows true north rather than magnetic north. Where I live, in So Cal, the magnetic declination is about 12 to 13 degrees east. If I don't set this, the compass direction will be off by this amount.
Gary K On topo maps in a lot of places there bench marks .they usually give an altitude.you calibrate you altitude to that one .when your in that area for a little while the altitude should be good enough to even locate yourself with topo and altimeter .or fairly close .did it for work often .
If you were alone lost in a large wood and you needed to walk back north to reach your car,you would give your right testicle to be wearing that watch.
Keep in mind your compass on the watch can be calibrated for either magnetic north or truth north. This may be the reason for your differing compass readings, especially if you have a lot of declination.
The compass was actually pretty accurate in this video. The letters on the compass had an indicator to the direction of ENE , E and ESE as it was changing based on movement. You will see the little indicator under the bezel pointing to where ENE or ESE etc is so it wasn't all at the 12 o clock position.
do u mind measuring the effective dial diameter (where the 'dynamic'/changing info is displayed. excluding anything 'static'/engraved/painted)? basically, the diameter of the 'ring' where 'seconds' bar is displayed.
Regarding 7:47 - from my point of view, constantly showing "Power Save", "Radio Sync" and the battery level is a big plus against the top-class PRW-7000 that I have. I need to press a button 11 times to see if the watch has synched last night or 12 times to see the battery level. And I need to pull out the crown to see the power save status. I would say, PRW-3000 and PRW-3100 even need an icon to show the autosync status.
Sure you have the ABC function in your smart phone, but the whole idea is that the protrek will continue to work in the field and will self-charge, unlike your gps, which will stop working after max 48 hours. This is an expedition watch. I think you are a type of complainer :) Nice reviewoverall thoug.
Fun fact, i bought one of these 2 days ago. I'm a skydiver and we should never use it as an altimeter, however on the way up the plane i used it in conjunction with my main altimeter. Perfect. Literally as my main altimeter climbed, this watch climbed right with it. About 40 foot difference but when you're skydiving, 40 feet is literally nothing😂😂😂. I can't get it to manually radio control but it does pick up the signal in the middle of the night when I'm not watching lol! Congrats to myself because i have a huge casio timex collection and this is the most ugliest yet best one i own. It'll be on my wrist for until it poops out! I also swim in the ocean and it's a tank in the water with 200m water resistance!
The altimeter wouldn't work for a pilot because it's pressure based (unless they are flying in an unpressurized plane). Also, the compass changes because it needs to be held flat. It moves when you angle it like any compass. You can also calibrate all the sensors if they are reading off, though most will never be super accurate, especially the pressure base altimeter.

I have the 2500T and don't get almost any use of the Altitude-Barometer-Compass but i do use the tide times for swimming and fishing. Its not that serious hikers cant use the Altitude-Barometer-Compass functions. I know the barometer comes in handy if you live under a rock and don't ever watch a weather report. Mine has lasted with constant use in 'tough' conditions but the paint on the watch rubs off and i would have thought CASIO's ProTeks would have this licked by now. Titanium is light and tough though, but does scratch. Timex have some of these functions too, so if casio is a little gaudy for your taste, try a timex model

Funny Nick, I have the G-Shock you were comparing it to and I love that little retro watch, though the buttons are too small. I like that Protrek, for an apocalypse watch, but I would get it with the resin band. Sometimes in the woods, phones die or have no signal, are much more fragile also. Good video. Heh - yeah, I just watched it. For me I just didn't want to be bugged by notifications on my wrist. Part of the reason I started wearing watches again was so I wouldn't pull out my phone all the time. You pull it out to check the time, then you notice something's happened on facebook or you check your email or whatever (because it's already in your hand so why not) then... eventually another 10 minutes of your life has disappeared for no good reason and all you wanted to do is check the time. I'm still more addicted to all that nonsense than I'd like, but it's definitely better.

What would you recommend for a reliable, accurate digital watch with a relatively small face? I've been looking at some Gshocks, but they're usually too big and full of features I don't really want, and I don't care for being stuck with a crappy band (I'd like to have aftermarket options).

I have a cheap fifty dollar Casio that has the compass feature and I have to set it everytime I want to use it so I stopped using it due to the fact I have trouble with memory and I have to check the book every time I want to set it, so it's useless unless I carry the little book around with me everywhere. It will work as I said for a few days and then boom needs to be reset. So like you said glad I don't need to rely on that feature. The temperature on it is the same as yours, totally useless. Overall though it's a solid watch and has like you said the day, date, time, seconds. All one needs in a watch and mine has a decent alarm and small buttons, Ha Ha. :) Love your reviews, thx again.

I agree with your assessment, I can understand someone wanting a Casio G-Shock if you are into actual sports, want a beater watch for real physical activity, and love those digital "extras". This thing though? No dice. All of it's features are better done by your everyday smart phone and it's watch side is better done not only by a army of well actual watches... but also by that G-Shock.
Nick, I have the plastic little brother to this watch (PRW-3000) and other than the case they are pretty much the same watch. I agree with all of the things you say in your review, but I would temper some of the bad and ugly with the knowledge that most are true for most ABC watches. I think the latest generation Protrek's are the best of the solar atomic ABC watches, warts and all. I have a Sunnto CORE ABC watch as well, and it's a considerable improvement over this in most ways (better UI, more accurate ABC functions with longer durations, less always on indicators etc) but its larger, not solar or atomic, and its backlight is meagre at best. Still, when flying, I choose the Sunnto over the Casio - because 100 feet can really make a big difference when flying in the mountains - gee what are those mountain goats doing up here in the clouds - lol Great review as always!
I badly wish the Suuntos were a bit smaller so I could give one an honest try. And I agree, this is probably the best Solar ABC watch out there, maybe excepting the 3100 with improved viewing angles. Cloud goats are always a concern!
Sure a cellphone may be able to give you all of the information that this watch can, but a cellphone may be useless if you are out hiking and have no cellular service. This watch however, will work fine under such circumstances. Also, you failed to touch on the painted aluminum bezel and integrated bracelet. I find that these are the two biggest flaws of this watch. I have had my prw 3000t for 2 years now and the bezel is completely scratched and sometimes I wish I could change the bracelet but cannot. Anyways, great video!
Good review, at first glance it looks like a nice watch but I don't think this qualifies as "N.S. Gem" status. I would have much preferred a titanium watch case to a Ti bracelet. Really enjoying your vids lately Nick.
I think I'm going to stick with my 1st gen Moto360. It's as accurate as the phone you use and I can impress my fellow entomologists with a watchface that looks like my favorite tick species (Amblyomma maculatum). Oh, and I can order my usual from the local pizza place by talking to it. Plus the last Casio watch I owned had a calculator that my fifth grade math teacher wouldn't let me use on the exams.
Use my Moto360 as a bedside clock 99.9% of the time. Mostly because i dont have an andriod mobile or tablet and iOS is very limited in letting you add functionality and faces alas...

CALIBRATE the damned compass, man! Do the figure 8's and do it OUTDOORS away from any metals. Even standard compasses react to electrical fields inside a house where AC current is humming through the wiring in the walls for the outlets and light fixtures. C'mon, Nick ... you know better. Thermometer: ANY THERMOMETER held in your hot little hand will register high. Take the damned thing off and set it down and come back in ten minutes. CALIBRATE it with a known good thermometer beforehand. Jeeez ...

Anyone else have an issue with static charge from clothing resetting the time to default 12:00 constantly? Is there a way to fix it or is it trash?
Others may have said this but altimeter should be adjusted to the correct level after you get it. How is explained in the manual. Thanks Nick

Everything can be calibrated including the compass.

Compass might be off due to magnetic declination... With my SGW-100B ... I had to set a 13 degree W declination angle for NY .....

SGW-1000 has the old sensors (bigger, slower and battery hungry). Also no radiosync and not sollar recharged.
