The major problem with mass immigration is not just numbers, although they matter in relation to how many a nation can expect to comfortably accept before they start to affect the welfare and lifestyle of the poorest in our society, ie, those most affected by immigration. No, the main problem is that most of those arriving share neither our culture or our values. Further, they arrive with all their own religious and cultural baggage intact, and then seek to recreate that obviously failed society, which they abandoned, here in Britain. We in turn, seeking to accommodate them, often end up watering down or even abandoning our own values, those which our ancestors shed sweat, blood, and tears in order to achieve. The result is an increasing, and dangerous breakdown in social cohesion. Fact is most of said immigrants, although enjoying all the freedom and benefits on offer, are either unable or unwilling to intergrate fully into this country. Instead, viewing our country as merely providing them with a passport of convenience. Listening to this i hear yet another discussion on immigration which, yes mentions integration, but tip toes around just how much of a problem it actually is, or how disastrous multiculturalism has proved to be for Britain, and indeed Europe as a whole.

It's ironic that we are encouraged to give safe haven to people who suffer from discrimination because they are gay while at the same time the same people are encouraging a general influx of arrivals that has the effect of making the UK more homophobic year by year. The indigenous UK population is undoubtedly one of the least homophobic in the world. Migrants from Asia and Africa bring with them more religious/traditional cultures that tend to be much less gay-friendly. 50% of UK muslims believe that homosexuality should be illegal (which doesn't mean to say that the other half are enthusiastic about it)- and many of these have been in the UK for years, even their whole lives. A desire for a less homophobic UK is simply incompatible with current patterns of influx.

He kept saying "more traditional cultures". Traditional for where? The mindblowingly appalling treatment of women and girls that is being imported to this country has no history here. Sure, English women have a long proud history of pushing for dignity and safety. But English men never had such sadistic attitudes towards women as the men moving here now do. Our traditions were never what their traditions are. We have profoundly different cultures.

The figurative milk might be spilt, but we could at least pick the bottle up (be uncompromising in stopping the import of incompatible cultures and illegal entries) and wipe up the milk (adjust policy so that there is no cushy welfare state advantage for permanent tourists, enact standards that recognise foreign culture as less eligible for promotion, do that thing they have in Sweden where any crime or even gang affiliation is a matter for deportation).
The only alternative is for it to get so much worse that it becomes all out civil war between leftists and islamists on one side (who are both plotting to mass-murder each other when the revolution comes), and whatever the right wing might coalesce around, and the worse the situation is, the more extreme is the principle that right-wingers are able to countenance.
A good start would be to tell the ECHR to go to hell, and start to torpedo the boats rather than guide them to shore. A few dozen invaders die and then nobody dares try it. If the Nazis had all gone unarmed and in plain clothes across the channel, I suppose we would put them all up in hotels while they waited for the guns to be parachuted in...
Trouble is, if the illegal immigrant problem were ever to be resolved, then people would go back to thinking about how insane the levels of legal immigration are... and the """"Conservative"""" Party can't abide that.

If you knew our history then you would be aware that this nation, since the Norman invasion, has experienced relatively minor immigration, up until the 1990s. The numbers of say the Huguenots being less than 2 percent. The numbers started to increase from the 1950s onwards, with the 1990s, as part of Blairs deliberate plan, being the major turning point. Another second generation immigrant is busy renaming London streets. I would say hyper immigration has already greatly damaged British culture. Refugee is just another word for Immigrant if they are allowed to come to live in the UK. If caring for Refugees is your thing, then we get more bang for our buck if we help fund or run Refugee Camps in bordering safe nations. The criminals crossing our boarders illegally are just a smoke screen behind which lies that Boris massively weakened our immigration requirements. Inviting in everyone from Hong Kong only makes sense if your aim is just more immigration. Helping other countries to get richer only enables their people to be more able to come to our county. Our nation was bankrupted by the insanity of Covid 19 lock downs and we still do not yet run a balanced budget. We show no interest in the idea of paying that debt down. The reality is we are more indebted than most of the countries we are helping. While it is nice to help others, our nation owes nothing at all to any other nation and our politicians should be entirely engaged in improving the lives of the people in our nation.

I'm certain David Goodhart is academically well educated, literate on the ‘higher’ value sets that have developed in that environment on the subject but I hear no practical reality, experience, validity to his current ‘solutions’. I am left with the perception of a man who is desperately holding on to the emotional rational of “I am a good man” to avoid handling / answering harder questions, such as: “if social / ethnic contention and divisiveness are a normal consequence of uncontrolled migration, is it not time to give the UK indigenous peoples, special, protective rights akin to ‘Canadian First Nation’ or Maori (New Zealand) rights?”. Interestingly David Goodhart does not deliniate ‘white’ any way. So, Anglo-Celtic, the largest ethnic grouping in the UK, doesn't appear to exist for him.
The hardest reality is, you cannot save everybody and if you can't except and start from that basic premise, you (he) should have the integrity to not except the position of an ‘advisor’ to a government minister(s).

David states that "only a tiny minority of people want an all white Britain". I dispute this. I think most people are, or certainly were opposed to mass immigration. As Roy Hattersley wrote in a Guardian artile entitled 'Politics should be guided by principle, not populism', 'Should I, in 1964, have called for what a clear majority of my constituents, and most of the country, undoubtedly wanted - the repatriation of all Commonwealth immigrants?'
No, Roy. Instead you betrayed the people who voted for you & oversaw their replacement, before retiring to rural Derbyshire on your fat, MP's pension to pat yourself on the back about how virtuous you are. Today Roy's former constituency is less than 5% white British. Our so called 'betters' betrayed the British people who never wanted or welcomed mass immigration. A 50 year war of constant propaganda & indoctrination has been waged against us to tell us we need this people, it is a lie!...

To stop illegitimate immigration you simply deny entry, same as what happens at Heathrow airport.
People arriving in dinghies from France cannot possibly be legitimate.
    This discussion is simply waffle.
And why should the taxpayer cover the cost?

Good suggestions but no mention our responsibility in wrecking so many countries people are now understandably desperate to flee. Look what we did to Libya, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon in recent history - let alone how we impoverished our ex-colonies are after being fleeced. Of course we cannot take all those who want a better life but we must stop financing wars overseas and use the money to help people develop their own countries - ironically as both Russia and China seem to be doing.

Riddle me this, David Goodhart. When we were in the Dublin Agreement, we didn't have any small boats.
Then we left the Dublin Agreement. And Lo! from 2019 onwards, the boats started coming. Do you think there might be connection between the two events? Bearing in mind that the Dublin Agreement allowed us to share out refugees across all EU countries and that all EU countries are still in the Dublin Agreement?
Do you think it's possible that the UK, being as it is, unique in now not being able to share out refugees, has come to the attention of criminal smuggling gangs? Who are capitalising on the fact that refugees coming to the UK have to be accepted by the UK because the UK cannot move the refugeees to other countries?
Do we think, David, that perhaps banning all known safe modes of transport might be in part responsible for the deaths in our waters of innocent people? Would providing safe routes take refugees out of the hands of criminal ganges and save lives, David? What we think, David?

Oh dear God, just another pathetic remainer referring to the Dublin agreement as the once solver of our illegal immigrant problem. Maybe check you facts first matey. According to migration watch figures, ( an organisation which has proved consistently correct on all matters concerning immigration) even while in the EU, the Dublin agreement proved almost useless to us. The numbers being accepted back was tiny, and reduced even further prior to the Referendum. In fact, we accepted more from Europe, specifically France, than we ever got rid of. And now, EU members themselves are increasingly recognising the utter failure of both your precious Dublin agreement, as well as the disaster of free movement itself. So cut the crap.

Put six cruise ships moored half a mile off Ascension Island each capable of accommodating 1000 people. Everyone that gets to Britain will be taken straight to Manston and then flown direct to Ascension and then to a nice comfortable cabin where they shall remain for a year whilst their asylum claim is processed. I estimate that after the sixth or seventh flight of 80 people each has taken place, the boats will stop. But there will still be capacity for additional four or five thousand should they think of having another go.
