And about Giles, his leave from the show is so we can actually explore the adulthood theme that it brings. Its Buffy without the safety net, and everything just goes to shit. The same goes for Tara, if she didnt leave Willow there would be no way things would get that bad cause she was the other mature character in the show. The rest of the cast was never mature, they needed the father figure

You keep saying that's not Willow, but that she's actually thinking the thi gs she's saying. You're right on both counts. This is Dark Willow. She is a part of Willow as a whole. We hall have that Darkness inside of us, no matter how good we try to be. This was illustrated by how easy it was for Willow to let the magic take over. She repressed a lot of herself when we first met her. Joss is showing us why we shouldn't do that. Remember how easily she was led to the demon that got released into the computer? Remember how she never dealt with her feelings with Xander and let herself get involved in an adulterous relationship? Until now, she kept herself so repressed that anytime she tapped into more power, you would see her eyes turn black.
Then, when tragedy strikes, she so used to repressing that she just represses the part of herself that feels anything but vengeance. Vengeance is a powerful place to exist, much more powerful than grief. Grief is powerless. She has let herself be powerless for too long.
When we deny parts of ourselves, all we do is create imbalances and extreme dichotomies. Two extremes can't share the same place, so that's when dissociation occurs. Dark Willow is completely dissociated from her humanity, so there is nothing to temper the base impulses or intrusive thoughts. Which is why she says what she says to Dawn.
Eventually (without spoiling too much) we get to see White Willow, the other end of the spectrum. But we don't get to see it until Willow learns how to honor, balance and thus control every part of her.
Joss uses this theme with Oz's arc when he has to leave to connect with his wolf so he can control it.
He also uses it with Spke vs Angel. Angel is a represser and a brooder. He shuns the 'Angelus' part of him when he is cursed with a soul, to the point where Angelus is able to keep secrets from him and be a constant threat. Spike accepted his Demon nature and learned to be good with it instead of in spite of it when his ability to harm people was taken away. He fought for a soul with his Demon nature fully participating so there was never a danger of him losing his soul. There was a blip he faced with The First, but he faced it right away and became stronger for it.
Even buffy has to do this. Faith is an example of what can happen if we repress. Buff struggles throughout the show's run with honoring every part of herself to stay balanced and powerful. Especially after she's brought back.
That's what we can take away from this theme. Feel and honour every part of yourself. We are complex, but when in balance, we are POWERFUL.

      👏👏👏👏👏
      Wonderfully fucking said. Wow!
One of Willow’s most repressed traits is sadism. Vampire Willow expresses and exhibits it with abandon. But there’s a reason why she’s one of the most sadistic vampires that we ever get to see in the Buffyverse.
It’s not because of the demon who took over Willow’s body. It’s because of Willow. Willow’s repressed sadism is something I love talking about because it’s such a fascinating subject when it comes to her characterisation.
You witness tidbits of it every now and again but it’s used for light humour. To break the tension in the narrative. We never think much of it until it’s used for a different purpose such as here.
Iconic Willow one-liners like “Occasionally, I’m callous and strange.” And “If you hurt her, I will beat you to death with a shovel.” and “He deserves a torturous and slow death by spider bites.”
Innocent funny one-liners or repressed sadism? Yes.
She was never as innocent or pure as she seemed. There was very much a storm brewing inside of this one and Season 6 said let it rain!
And it’s probably the best fucking payoff of all the built-up character representation and development in the entire show. I adore it.

What’s so interesting about this fight scene is what they’re fighting for. Willow states that being a “side man” all her life since Buffy came into it bothered her. So it’s a big deal for her to get to take on the Slayer. To feel what it feels like to be a Slayer herself. And have Buffy immediately respond back that that’s not what a “Slayer” is. I guess that’s something Willow thought. That the Slayer was all about the violence. There’s several times she brings up Buffy’s violence.
And then there’s the reason Buffy’s fighting Willow. It’s not because she wants to. It’s because she has no other choice. Willow won’t stop. There’s no other way that she can think of to temper her. And Willow keeps taunting her. What else is she to do but retaliate back?
Violence is the answer. Proving Willow’s point all the more. So a showdown begins between them. It’s a highly entertaining scene for all those reasons but then also just because it’s never happened before.
*Puts on the Western showdown theme 'The Good the Bad and the Ugly' and grabs some popcorn*
Willow was never okay with being perceived as a “sidekick” to Buffy and this was the perfect opportunity for her to express this. It’s part of what makes Dark Willow such a formidable opponent. She’s antagonist with words just as much as she is with action. Like Angelus, she knows Buffy and she uses what she knows about her weaknesses, pains and flaws to attack her. That’s why Angelus/Dark Willow and Angel/Willow are so similar in hindsight. It’s not just their power or their strength that’s challenging.
It’s also their intelligence, their ability to manipulate and deceive their opponents and their need to torture.
These characters ( both as their good/evil selves ) are so similar in such a way that’s hard to explain. Angelus is considered an entirely different entity from Angel and Dark Willow isn’t considered an entirely different entity from Willow. But some argue that Angel/Angelus aren’t so different at all. There’s lots of similarities. And I feel like getting to know Angel in his own show will only give me more logic and evidence as to how and why. As well as how Angel/Willow and Angelus/Dark Willow intertwine as characters.
It makes all the sense in the world to me that Willow is the only character in all of the Buffyverse who has ever been able to restore Angel’s soul. And that she does so twice: in Season 2 of ‘BtVS’ and in Season 4 of ‘AtS’. There’s something significant there that I will analyze and delineate once I have all the information.

Buffy is a warrior, she'd keep fighting until the end. But still, I don't think being a Slayer is just about violence. It's about stopping the dark forces of nature.
At that point, Willow was one of them. Being a Slayer is drawing the line at "murdering" humans. Which is why Buffy clapped back at her. Willow killed someone. Buffy didn't.

Willow's heel turn has been coming for a very long time. Certainly as Sofie says, since she started not just experimenting with magic, but trying to use it to solve her own problems ... like almost doing a "de-lusting" spell on Xander way back in Season 3. But personally, I don't think Willow has had all of these specific angers and resentments the whole time. I think she's always had identity and self-esteem issues. But I don't think she started resenting Buffy or being disgusted with Dawn until her feelings got all twisted around by dark magic this season. Anyway, that's my take on it.

      Sorry I didn't detail enough.
My point is that Willow is losing her humanity over this dark energy.
She has always underestimated magic. She always thought she could do whatever she wanted, just because Missy had a blast practicing it. Because it kinda gave her an "ego boost". This is why Tara took a break from their relationship, for a while. Because she was the first one to notice how far this was going. @@Girl4Music
Resurrecting Buffy was the last straw, to me. Starting the season with a scene like that, just shows you how careless she is with magic. Even when Xander and Anya were having second thoughts about it, she kept pushing. She was like "don't worry guys, I'll just bring her back like it's nothing". But when you actually watch the ritual, without having any knowledge of it, you can tell how wrong this is.
This time is a bit different, because we all know she lost Tara, but STILL. It's not even the first time we see her taking the dark magic from these books. Remember when Glory hurt Tara ? Willow went straight to the Magic shop and did the same thing, only to get back at Glory.
Willow is just an impulsive idiot, who thinks that magic can solve anything, without consequences.
And I still think to this day that Buffy's resurrection was one of the consequences of Tara's death.
Also, the fact that Giles had what it took to give Willow's humanity back is what confirms my statement.

No, Willow, you would not consider yourself the villain in your own heroic story. The Trio didn’t either despite referring to themselves as “supervillains”. It’s only Warren that truly wore the mantle of supervillain when he realized he wasn’t so super. When things got rocky for him. So in the same way, Willow could never truly cross the threshold to Big Bad status without a rocky situation for herself.
She could teeter around it but there really did need to be one hell of a catalyst to push her off the deep end. And they decided Tara dying was it. And I completely agree but I didn’t agree with the way it happened because Tara represented more than just that. Just Willow’s trigger. She had an arc of her own to conclude. And in my opinion - she should have died then and there and then Willow would definitely have a lot to face up to and likely couldn’t.
I didn’t like how they waited until Willow was in recovery, Tara had autonomy in the narrative, and they had made love for the entire fucking episode. That’s not the way it should be.
I agree with Tara’s death. Just don’t agree with how or why she died. Because as far as I’m concerned, Tara dying point blank would throw Willow off a fucking cliff into complete insanity.

I figured it out pretty damn early actually so the twist wasn’t as shocking to me as it was with other people.
I noticed the theme of power corruption cropping its way into the show with Willow. My first inkling that she might be the Big Bad was in ‘Afterlife’ when she let go of Tara’s hands to complete that spell by herself and her eyes turned black.
I didn’t expect the addiction theme. But the power corruption theme - yeah, that was a pretty strong tell.
They did the same thing with Dan Steven’s character in Marvel’s ‘Legion’ which I actually watched before I watched Buffy. I was very late to the party. 😊
And power corruption is a massive theme that turns what you know to be the hero or protagonist into the villain or antagonist. It all depends on how they do it. Slowly but surely for Willow it seems. It was inevitable.

The funny thing is that through the entire fight with Buffy, it's just Willow having fun. She could kill Buffy any time she wanted just as quickly as she killed Warren. Obviously, she doesn't because deep down, she really doesn't want to. I have to imagine that Buffy is aware of all this, so it really sells her own acting ability (Buffy's, not SMG's) that she can act so confident when she's about to fight an opponent she knows she can't beat.

yeah no she has to fight her physically until Anya is taken out. The spell is cast on Willow, not on the others to protect them, thats why Anya has to stay, she is nullifying any spells Willow casts on others. Once she is taken out Willow uses all of her power and does easily best Buffy before Giles steps in.

    • @TheJayden3977

No because Anya had found a way to block Willow’s magic, and in the physical fight Buffy is the one holding back MASSIVELY. If Buffy was going out all physically like she has against other villains Willow wouldn’t beat her. If Anya wasn’t restricting Willow’s magic of course Dark Willow would beat her (although Buffy has super human durability unlike Warren so there is a debate on whether it would work). Willow wasn’t having fun or toying with Buffy, she was hell bent on getting Andrew and Johnathan.

    Big Bads:
    Season 1 : the Master
Season 2 :Angel, Spike, and Drusilla
    Season 3: Mayor Wilkins
    Season 4: Adam
    Season 5: Glory
    Season 6: Life
Life is the big bad. Living, getting through it. The accumulation of setbacks, the temptations that degrade the soul, the self-sabotage.
All of the tragedies let up to Willows losing it, her guilt, her relationship mistakes, her triumphs turned to tragedy, her ultimate losses of Buffy, Giles, Tara, even Xander to Life moving on without her. Even bringing Buffty back which she was so proud of turned to bitterness, with everyone telling her no all season for everything she did.
Killing Tara is probably the worst decision the show-runners ever made, but it works here, I guess. It hurts the show, though, and nobody ever too this day says "Oh yeah that was the best plot twist" it is universally despised. I think the writers played it wrong as a major show arc, it hurt the show. Buffy's "end"in season 5 made sense as a bookend for all 5 seasons, and rhymed with the season 1 finale, but Tara's just was thrown in as a shocker, and kind of made enemies of the audience to the show itself.
It is interesting too look at the career trajectories of the actors after leaving the show -- some went on to stardom, some spent time on the convention circuit and some just left Hollywood. Amber Benson decided to become a writer/producer with occasional bit parts in TV and movies. Her latest project is a Buffyverse audio book which she does speak on, as well as produce with several Buffy stars doing voices -- due out October 2023!

DeKnight confirmed Tara's scene was in Joss's mind (even with the shirt thing) one year before. He needed it in order to unleash the Dark Phoenix thing from X-Men. Obviously there were changes, in every season, mostly S6 and S7 when Joss had 3 shows and a day to day showrunner (Marti) but the orange cones were pretty much planned one year before. It’s not demonic possession or incarceration. I originally thought Dark Willow was a vengeance demon but just not one under D’Hoffryn’s control. With all the hints about it I thought that’s what they were going to do with her dark phase. But nah. It’s ‘Just Willow’ as Xander said with the themes of power corruption, addiction, vengeance, rage and hatred all rolled into one. Willow is more animal than monster. Capable of being redeemed as Giles said.
I suppose - not unlike your werewolf or vampire. Not quite human but not quite not human either. She hasn’t lost her soul or anything like that. But she could lose her humanity if she continues killing.
I have already compared Angel/Angelus to Willow/Dark Willow which nobody has any problem understanding as the same person. Mostly because it makes complete sense why it happens. And there’s no “vampire with a soul” context with it. There’s a vampire without a soul but that’s a whole other discussion entirely. Vampire Willow is a subject I will return to at some point in analyzing this vampire lore concept - don’t worry. But for “Willow”/“Dark Willow” we know it’s ‘just Willow’. There’s no split-divide identity/personality going on other than the one Willow wants to create for herself to remove her “self” from the pain/grief of losing Tara but also comes right back into first-person whenever she talks about Tara and how she’s able to make her feel. Wonderful, special, loveable, powerful etc… What Willow is doing is unconsciously splitting herself into two entirely different people because she cannot face the reality of the situation in front of her as Willow - only as Dark Willow. Basically choosing to accept and embrace her new evil persona because she believes her good persona isn’t good enough to do the job. A job of which she employs on herself as her responsibility and loyalty to Tara. To kill Warren. To avenge her death. She allows the power and the darkness to take over her. But it’s still just Willow. There’s no demonic possession, there’s no demon escaping from incarceration in an alternative verse. It’s just Willow letting the darkest magic control and corrupt her while she is riddled with anger and hate. The only emotions she can feel are animalistic ones and even they’re rapidly becoming numb as time goes on drugged up with insanely powerful black magicks. So she removes herself from it all by creating a distinction between who she was and who she is. Speaking in third-person, insulting and attacking herself. Hating on her very existence as just Willow much like Faith does when she’s in Buffy’s body. As the Rolling Stones song goes; her world is painted black. Nothing matters anymore but to go with it as the UA-camr Faith Victoria (also known as @willnotacceptalifeundeserved) so beautifully demonstrated in their Dark Willow character study video using a cover rendition of that song.
She’s “just Willow” as Xander said. But that could mean anything and everything with how dynamic and morally grey of a character she is. Just Willow is a hell of a lot of character representation on its own.

Posting my BUFFY REWATCH recap for ‘Two To Go’. May contain spoilers.
The two people that ever wronged Willow the most are Warren and Veruca. And the way they wrong her the most are because of being the catalysts for her losing her lovers. Veruca made Oz walk out the door by manipulating him into thinking the wolf was who he was. Warren made Willow lose Tara by accidentally killing her. Anything that happened to Willow herself at any point didn’t cause her as much pain as anything that happened to her loved ones. Willow wrapped her entire self around the people she cared about that when she was without them, she was gone.
After losing Oz: “I feel like I’ve been split down the center and half of me is lost.”
After losing Tara: “The only thing I had going for me were the moments, just moments, when Tara would look at me and I was wonderful.”
There’s a co-dependency to Willow’s character that is so fascinating to think and write about for me since I have never experienced this loss of identity in myself.
So why then does she turn on and against her loved ones in this episode? If that of which causes her the most pain is pain to and losing her loved ones, why is she now suddenly attempting to hurt them? Well, the answer to that has already been answered. They’re in the way of her greater plans while she is riddled with an intense and confusing blend of emotions and themes that she cannot differentiate between because she’s lost all sense and control of self: anger, hatred, grief, vengeance, sorrow, pain and power. These greater plans that take most priority override everything else that matters at the moment and they’re being driven by all these emotions and themes at once. She’s running on nothing else but pure animalism. The more and more power she accumulates and absorbs into herself, the worse this gets. And the more and more people get in her way, innocent or not, loved ones or not, the more and more her rage is fuelled. The more and more likely she is to turn evil and completely lose all of her humanity. The more and more likely that she is to become a monster just like any demon or vampire. She’s at the brink here. She could topple over and submerge herself into the empty abyss, taking everything and everyone with her, at any moment. But there’s a reason why she doesn’t. At least, not yet.
There is still a part of her that is clinging on to the surface, to the ground beneath her feet. To life and to humanity. And the reason is Tara. For the few moments that she thinks of Tara and all that Tara means to her, all of which Tara has done for her, and how much Tara loved her, she is propelled back to herself and back to the excruciatingly painful thought that Tara is gone. And then the whole cycle starts all over again. She’s mentally and emotionally stuck in a cycle between the immediate and stark urgency to kill Jonathan and Andrew and the dull ache of not wanting to bother at all if it doesn’t make a difference to the outcome. If it doesn’t bring her Tara back. If it doesn’t make her feel any better. But alas, because of the corruptive power of black magic, the former wins out. Now the question is would throwing around physical reflections and reminders of her roots in nerdism be more satisfying than throwing around a reflection and reminder of what grew her out of it? Not likely. ‘Cause it’s like the woman cannot live if she’s not living for somebody else - be it for the better or for the worse.
Buffy and Willow’s showdown in ‘Two To Go’ is years of repressed jealousy, resentment and ignorance boiling to spill over. This showdown that occurs at the climax of this episode is the legendary Caesar VS Brutus showdown.
    WILLOW: “So. Here we are.”
BUFFY: “Are we really gonna do this?”
WILLOW: “Come on, this is a huge deal for me! Six years as a side man, and now I get to be the Slayer.”
BUFFY: “A killer isn't a Slayer. Being a Slayer means something you can't conceive of.”
WILLOW: “Oh, Buffy. You really need to have every square inch of your ass kicked.”
BUFFY: “Then show me what you got. And I'll show you what a Slayer really is.”
When it came right down to it, Willow perceived Buffy as a violent inhuman thing that would ultimately expose her greatest fear. And yet she’s the one that turned into the monster all because she couldn’t let her anger and hatred go and let the magic power that made her something a little more than human go to her head.
Willow’s perception of Anya in her ‘Restless’ nightmare when her perception of Buffy unveiled her perception of herself: “It’s exactly like a Greek tragedy.”
Definition of ‘Greek tragedy’ by Collins Dictionary: a play in which the protagonist, usually a person of importance and outstanding personal qualities, falls to disaster through the combination of a personal failing and circumstances with which he or she cannot deal
FAITH VICTORIA: “Just like how the Roman empire fell because of inner corruption, Willow became Dark Willow because of her inability to reconcile her inner turmoil with her misuse of magic, and fell from grace in her own way.”

She doesn't want to feel, because she can't handle the pain and always try to avoid it (even with Oz, she tried to do a spell to avoid the suffering).
Her friends are a reminder of her feelings and her loss, so she wanted to supress them, with more and more strenght every time, until she decided to end everything so she can stop feeling any more.

A great title for this episode Willow now in true 'Darkman' mode, revenge is all that is driving her, and the other two, Andrew and Jonathan seem doomed. Anya explaining in a matter of fact way to the Prison Guard what is going to happen is very funny. Her chase is relentless, and the scream she lets out outside the Prison is really chilling. The other part of the story arc is Spike's quest to complete the tasks. Prophetic words indeed when Buffy says is she is running low on magic power, she is gonna need to juice up soon, and we switch to the abominable Rack. Willow of course is now more powerful as him, and takes his strength. The Willow and Dawn conversation is interesting, with Willow's now piercing eyes looking straight onto Dawn's mind. Willow saying to Dawn you weren't always human, and why is she crying as she is just a mystical ball of energy, this is so hurtful to Dawn. Funny too when Jonathan and Andrew are arguing and Anya says ' the annoying Virgin has a point '. Great dramatic and painful conversation in The Magic Box with Xander and Anya. Willow's great scene with Buffy at Rack's where she seems to release all her pent up anger and hurt she has endured over the years of Bullying and being thought of as a nerd, and now feels she has the power to take revenge on all is a very interesting concept from the writers, it seems now as she refers to herself as a 'junkie' but feels the need to get even on everybody. The killer line here is when Willow says to Buffy, 'you hate it here even more than I do'. We switch back to Spike briefly to see he has more tasks to complete, which is interesting as this story is sidelined here as the main event is in the Magic Box, but the Spike storyline even though peripheral here, is probably the most important for the whole Series! The Buffy/Willow showdown was inevitable. It seems so bitter when Willow says to Buffy 'years of being your sideman' there seems to almost actual hate and jealousy towards her here, she is of course just too powerful now, but a brilliant ending scene Willow is thrown across the room, and we see the return of a 'juiced up' Giles, great satisfaction for the viewer here setting up a great Finale.

“What did he think she wanted?”
It’s not stated but I think the answer to your question is in what he calls her.
    “Strawberry”
And his creepy physical closeness to her. It’s likely Willow “paid” for her magic power fixes with her body since he said that he doesn’t take money.
I seriously hope not of course. But it wouldn’t surprise me that that’s how she became “his new favourite”.
Plus there’s that shower scene after she’s just come back from Racks where she’s crying and shaking.
And I doubt it’s just from the withdrawal. Unfortunately that’s another thing drug addicts do to feed their addiction. Sell their body.
It’s horrifying but given how dark this season is… I would not be shocked by it.

It's literally shown on screen (in the earlier episode) how he uses her and her body. I didn't get the feeling we were supposed to think something more mundane happened off-screen, since what's shown is already very clear: she's selling her body for a fix. Just, you know, "magically".

I don't think it was Willow talking when she talks about Buffy being miserable and Dawn whining. I think it's her sadness and anger surfacing big time. I think she has been a true best friend to Buffy and I feel she completely loves Dawn. But, she is livid and angry and doesn't care about extending that pain.
