@@2minutesguitar708 I went to Eric Johnson play a show here in Memphis and Shawn came up to say hello. I asked if he was going to get up and jam. He said "I don't know, we'll see." Well next thing you know Shawn is up there onstage with Eric and they are jamming on Hendrix's Spanish Castle Magic. It hurts me to say it, Shawn smoked Eric. Hard to image that was possible, I'm such a huge Eric Johnson fan, but I honestly think there was nobody on this earth that could go head to head with Shawn. And he truly was just a regular good guy
I absolutely admire his insight, his talent, and unassuming nature. There are giants among us that we don’t always see, I’m glad this one showed himself.
This is probably the most valuable advice an honestly the “secret” to shredding or doing anything great in life. Don’t overthink, spend a stupid amount of hours on it, and it will reveal itself to you. Has to be found within, doesn’t matter what guitar you have, or amp, processors, pick angle, none of that matters really. Listen to any of these caliber players, they usually have a super hard time explaining what they do because how could you unless you were them! Lol Shawn saying look within and don’t let the system reset if you can help it, brilliant, RIP MR SHAWN LANE, you are still inspiring us thank you kind sir!!!🙌🏽👏🎸🔥
I still can't believe, especially for all the shredders out there that Shawn Lane gets very little or no credit for being one of the greatest guitar players ever.
I think there's a lot of people actually, I know Paul Gilbert calls him the most terrifying guitar player of all time. Eric Johnson too. But it is a shame that so many people haven't heard of him. Or Holdsworth. You could search top 10 best guitarists on the internet and I bet Allan or Shawn won't be on most of them, meanwhile Eric Clapton, Kirk Hammet, Slash will be. And those articles are supposed to be written by guitarists.... Clearly not very knowledgable ones.
Shawn is on a different level than all guitar players. Nobody comes close to his tone, technique and melodic shredding. Just wish more people heard of him, even my guitar buddies say " Shawn who".
i doubt he thought of these ideas on his own as a musician he had the opportunity to be around other older musicians who prob taught him these concepts.
@@mannyfragoza9652 I'm sure he learned a lot from other players, but he took a lot of it and made it his own. Firstly, no one was playing like he was until he hit the scene. Secondly, you think there was another musician with a stutter who told him how to make the connections with speaking and playing the way he explained here?
Shawn once told me that we're all peons compared to the likes of Beethoven and Bach, so whether we play music or not is unimportant. He really didn't see his own playing as that important either. I unfortunately took his advice and basically stopped playing during the time I knew him well. I thought "Why does anyone need to hear my playing when someone like Shawn exists".
Heh that is kinda similar to when we hung out a bit before I left Memphis . I ended up being inspired but seeing how easy it was for him since his memory was savant like I had to manage my own expectations but most of the time we just talked about twin peaks and Russian movies lol
@@damonstewart70 Shawn had a like, communist authoritarian view on music. He kind of thought only a select few should even be allowed to write and/or perform music really. And that an individual's own personal self expression simply didn't matter. Kind of grim. I believe he was sort of torn about his own musical importance. Sometimes he thought he was not too shabby, other times he thought he was insignificant.
Brilliant. I’m from Memphis and worked in a music store where he was one of my customers. He was a kind, humble genius.
Great, if you have more anecdotes about Shawn, please share!
Please tell more!!!
I can imagine he would’ve been an unassuming modest man. The world is so much the poorer for his passing.

Because nobody can touch Shawn Lane
@@2minutesguitar708 Exactly
Guthrie Govan and Andy Timmos are like the only people I heard that gave him credit for being like one of the GOATS

Shawn said that Holdsworth was the best.
Shawn Lane was an absolute monster on guitar and keyboards.
You build a music machine in your brain and then sit back and listen to what it does. It took me thirty years to figure that out.
thank u for this comment

A deeper thinker than you'll encounter generally, or perhaps one that has the gumption to put his thoughts out there

Heck out kenny werners effortless mastery. Same idea but a different presentation. Both worth wrapping your mind around

Lynch and Tarkovsky, no less.
Shouldn't have stopped playing though

Shawn is the goat.
This was amazing, so insightful.
Great advice!
Brilliant. He makes complete sense.
Pure genius.
He reminds me a lot of John Frusciante in how deep he thinks. Seemed like a cool guy!
Holy shit he is spot on here..
legendary
I expected "Don't try this at home"
Thanks for sharing. I hate to hear how Shawn sounds here. He passed later that year.
I read some time ago that both language and music are processed in the same area of our brains. From this premise, Shawn's idea makes total sense.
He sound kinda old in this vid.. How old was he on this recording?
40, links in the description ✌️
He was quite ill. He passed away that year.
