Hello, pretty lady. Yet another question, how do you know what colors to highlight and shade with?

    • @MissFlamepaints

That is a very good questions and I can't really give a good answer. The basic is that you go from a dark color, to medium, to light color. So from a dark brown, then use a medium brown and highlight with a light brown. But which colors you will use all depends on the color you want it to look like. Also instead of using multiple different colors you can also lighten a color by adding a bit of White. But that doesn't always work. If you mix in white with Red for example it will turn pink and that will not work. And there are also colors that are harder to highlight then others like: Black, White and Red. Go with the basic: dark, medium, light, try to find colors that will go well with each other, see what are people are using and try something out! When I am painting sometimes it doesn't work out and I will paint over the previous layer with a different color until I have something that I like. It will come with experience. When I was painting the cape of Theo I was actually not sure if I was using the correct colors. But when I applied the final highlight I thought the color of his cape looked so awesome. And I made it all up by myself of which colors to use.

Now for shading. I am actually not a shading queen ^^. I am still trying to improve and I am having better results. I like how I used and tried thinner layer of shade on Theo and the next heroe I have pained. For shading the basics are to use the shade in the color of your paints. I will use examples of the Citadel shades. So skin is Reikland Fleshshade (that one is easy). Brown is Agrax Earthshade or Seraphim Sepia. Sepia is a lighter brown shade and much "cleaner' then Agrax. Agrax can look a bit "dirty" and darker. But if you want a darker shade but still with a brown I will mix in Nuln Oil with Agrax Earthsahde. And ofcourse you can do this also with the Blue: Drakenhof Nightshade and Green: Biel-Tan Green; to add Nuln Oil with that. With the shade it also depends of what are you going for. You can also use Nuln Oil on colors if you are going for this darker color.
Sorry for the long wall of text. But I do hope this helps you a bit.

What brushes do you use? The ones I've been using bent at the tips after a very short time.

Christofil Anciano The brushes I use are from: da vinci - nova synthetics. I buy them at a local craft & paints shop. They are pretty cheap around €4 I believe. When you are done painting do you roll the tip of the brush in the shape you want? when the brush is dry it will stay in that shape. This after you cleaned the brush, there is no more paint in yhe brush.
