    Segment pulled from my Carl Zeiss Biotar 58mm F/2 review. Correct way to pronounce Biotar (B-ee-oh-tar) not (BIO as in BIOLOGY class) Also Jena is (Ye-nah). Regardless, interesting history this lens has.

    I really like the shorts you are making, but I always feel like they end too quickly, just when it starts to get interesting. But I also really nerd for lenses.

      They’re existing snippets from my full lens reviews that’s why. I wanted to package them out as a stand-alone thing. They also take forever to produce so lol, they’ll always be short for what youtube “pays” me.
      I’m a nerd too, it’s why I even do these segments 😂

    When I took out my dad's Exakta Camera to use recently I realized I recognized it, not because of using but because I had watched Alfred Hitchcock's REAR WINDOW the week before. So I had to go and check out the movie again. Sure enough, Jimmy Stewart's L.B. Jefferies is using an Exakta Camera, although the camera name is blacked out. And can I say that I love that beast of a lens he has attached to his camera!

    This is one of my favourite lenses I use for video. One out of three.
    Thanks a lot for your video.
    I love your "Vintage lens files"
    Gives them some mystical flair.

      The Helios 44-2 (it’s copy) was used in The Batman car chase sequence. Rehoused for cinema use, but inside that lens is the Helios which is basically this lens. So you appreciate the same things DP Greg Fraser does. Good taste mate ✊

    I'm totally with you on three things:
    1:45 Or may I say, that is the reason it was so Brillant? coz esteemed from the ingenuity of passionate mind and not a cold senseless binary machine!!!
    1:39 Seem no matter where in the calendar you look, at the time of introduction of a flagship, whether it's a Canon 1D* or Nikon D* or Sony *9*, adjusted for inflation, the target price that the pro-consumer is expected to pay is ~ 5 to 6 K $... Isn't that astonishingly strange or a marketing gold standard!!!
    3rd - Whatever Real German Zeiss made, was Magical, Timeless, and Priceless. Pitty they had to go only for the name to remain as a higher grade commodity.

      They do they’re all part of existing lens reviews. But some people just want a snippet of history as a factoid without the 7 mins full review.

    Very effective editing of old newsreel films. Music too. Well done. Didn’t they have “scientific” slide rules to help perform optical calculations?

    Hi Mark, I found 2 copy of this design, one with 17 blades and other with 12 blades. My question is are they that different from each others? given the price usually almost twice as much for the 17 blades. Thanks!

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  2 роки тому +1

      12 is still enough for nice round highlights. 17 is more of a collector item at this point so that explains the price. Go for what you feel most comfortable with. Either is a win.

    Have the Exakta-mount version that I absolutely love. Not the sharpest lens beyond the midframe, but wonderfully sharp in the middle, and I have a 10-blade version (which I specifically sought out) so it gives me those lovely 10-point sunstars that make me weak in the knees.

    Any vintage zoom lens recommendations?

    • @MarkHoltze
      @MarkHoltze  2 роки тому

      The “best” I think might be the Contax Zeiss 35-70 F3.4 (pocket full of primes). But apart from that thr 70-210 from canon FD is decent and inexpensive. Good vintage zooms are hard to recommend.
