I was raised to use wide tooth comb but a lot of hair comes out so, for the last 5 or 6 months I've been using my fingers and a brush plus I don't detangle with wet hair anymore.
I love my weighed down hair. I remove my bonnet and my hair falls into place. I don't go out of my way to do dedicated protein treatments. I alternate between moisture and strengthening deep conditioners. I consider my hair normal porosity. It gets wet fairly quick and doesn't look like hay if I let it dry without product. I use my wide tooth comb occasionally. I use my fingers and brush most times. I have far few tangles since finding my hydration/moisturize sweet spot. I also pre poo and do hot oil treatments every wash day. I'm a 60s baby. I didn't grow with deep conditioner, hair dryers or leave in. It was shampoo, rinse out conditioner and hair grease
I love my hair to be coated. I love using grease. I also love my hair to feel dampened with moisture all the time. If your audience ever had Gerry curls when they was younger our hair was so moist with that juice and we had long hair. I live in a dessert so keeping my hair dampen is key for length retention.
Also, that’s a good thing to bring up to people who say having moist hair can cause scalp problems, bacteria etc… how come none of that happened during the Gerry curl era?
Put aloe vera juice in a spray bottle. It hydrates and it has great benefits for hair. Google what aloe vera juice does for the hair. You will thank me later.
@@debragainey3231 I’ve tried aloe vera juice before when I first went natural. But I life in a very very dry climate and humectants did the opposite for me. Always looks forward to watching your videos. ❤ I only use wide tooth comb when styling. I washed my hair recently and decided to try the kazmaleje paddle brush comb during my shampoo session. My mind was blow away. Compared to soley finger detangling during shampoo session i was able to shampoo and detangle my hair with about 5 to 10 mins. And this is while shampooing my hair freely and not in twists like I usually do. Never thought about putting sunscreen on my hair. I don't really spend hours outside in the sun. I love weighted down hair even whe my hair is straight. It creates more longevity of the styles I'm wearing. I don't solely finger detangle like I use to so I don't really experience heavy single strand knots unless I'm due for a trim. Hydration and moisture is key number one for hair growth. I now look forward to wash days. It's like a spa day for me. Greasy hair is part of our hair. Why should hair be bone dry. 😂 Deep conditioning has great benefits. Once or twice a month I do a good treatment. In the warmer months I refresh my scalp with rose water weekly. When my hair is straight in the winter months my scalp gets pretty dry and flakes at the front after 3 weeks so I have to go through and brush them out and oil my scalp a bit and massage.
Love this! 😄 I also love weighed down hair, drenched with my Ayurvedic oils and shea butter. It helps the shed hair slide out and not get tangled as much as it would. And it doesn’t shrink as fast. Regarding tools, I use an expensive, medium sized tooth comb that I’ve had for 9 years. It gives me the delicacy that a wide tooth is supposed to offer, but the efficiency of a brush…after a finger detangle first of course. Girl you said a lot and it was great! 🌺
I never cared about porosity. Been thinking of doing a video about it for the longest time actually. Never believed the test was reliable so never went by it. I just go with what gives my hair the results I like and helps my hair thrive and my hair has never suffered because of not considering my porosity in my hair care routine. When it comes to detangling, I go with fingers, wide tooth comb then detangling brush.
That’s a smart way around it sis . it’s definitely overhyped. I feel the same way because upon doing the test I was low porosity but my hair did not take well to low porosity practices
I also love my hair being weighed down. Looks best that way. Every time I tried to use less products and oils , the styles just wouldn’t fall right. But I must say I have a problem of overdoing it. 😢Definitely always have stained bonnets and pillows especially after wash days and when I’ve remoisturised my hair. Definitely a heavy handed natural 🤣
I grew my hair to waist length from neck length hair without applying the principles of porosity. Shampoo, deep condition, moisturizes, twist it up and leave it alone until next wash day. I also never needed to remoisturize my hair in-between my weekly wash. I am very active and sweats from my scalp. I literally can not go past 6 days without cleansing my scalp. So for me, I might as well cleanse my hair and complete my whole routine.
****I am ABSOLUTELY a wide tooth comb user, and that will NEVER change. I does WONDERS for detangling my hair without breaking it off. Brushes are what break my hair. I stay away from brushes, unless they are the huge brushes with the big plastic bristols.
I agree with your points. The high porosity is a really good point. I never really thought about it, but it makes sense. Also, with protective styling left my hair super dry and brittle.
I have been using clove, fenugreek and rosemary water mixed with aloe Vera juice in my scalp. I have noticed that when I spray it in my scalp every three to four days it is cleansing my scalp. I train Jiu Jitsu three to four times a week and my scalp doesn’t get buildup up on it. I’m sure it’s because of the spray. Before I starting using it I would notice that I would have to wash my hair more often and I would get an itchy scalp. But since using it I can go 4-5 weeks without washing my hair because the spray is cleansing my scalp. I do follow the spray with an oil blend that I made So my hair doesn’t dry out. But it has been working well for me.
I don't think we need sunscreen for hair. Speaking from personal experience, my hair is about level 5 in colour, and when I was younger, and used zero products, my hair would sunbleach to at least a level 9 in summer. But once I started using leave-ins and oils that protected my hair enough that it stayed dark. Now if I want the sun to bleach it, I'd have to shampoo it and go outside with zero conditioner. (Which is why I highlight it now instead.) So I think our regular products (and a hat!) protect hair just fine. 😊
I ditched wide tooth comb about 7 yrs ago. Once I discovered the tangle teezer my wide tooth comb went out the door. It was inefficient and had no place in my hair routine.
Interesting that you say you actually like greasy hair. I just recently had the exact same thoght. Thank you so much. I'm going to try Jojoba Oil. ❤❤ I have tried the grease Blue Magic (the blue one), but I'm not sure if I need to use oil and grease on my ends. My hair is not retaining length very well. What grease do you like to use?
Hi thanks for this video I senp the last 6+ months rethinking how I care for my hair. In june of 22 moved I to a sunny dry climate. It's been rough on my hair and skin. In July of 23 I starting using henna and amla as protein treatments it is necessary to balance with moisture As for sun protection I started wearing hair wraps and plan to for summer. There are nice silk lined pre wrapped ones.
I actually lightly detangle my hair with my fingers before using a detagling brush. Also, I always detangle with deep conditioner in my hair after about 20 minutes under the dryer. I use a wide tooth comb during styling, but not for detangling purposes. After putting whatever stying product in my, i then run the comb through once and then style.
I also like heavy products. My hair is lightweight and airy naturally. It defies gravity naturally. However, I like a bit of hang time so I prefer heavy products to lightweight ones like mousses.
I could not be switching up styles because my hair won’t let me and my scab won’t let me. I have to do one style and leave it because if not, my head is going to start hurting and I’ll leave that style up for a whole to threemonths.

Wow info packed video . I’ve seen that video in us being high porosity instead of low. It’s gonna take me a minute to wrap my head on that one . I feel like my hair is lower in porosity in the front than in the back . My curls are tighter in the back then front. I’m reevaluating if I’m protein sensitive bad experiences in the past have made me wary but I am adding protein back in my routine . I’m not doing any hard protein more of a protein moisture balance type of thing and I do that once a month. I agree about the protective styling about doing it your self and controlling the manipulation. I think sometimes the added hair can cause allergic reactions.
so true ! when I big chopped this year and I did the porosity test my hair swiftly went into the water! I was like OMG they lied to me about being low porosity or what ?! I was relaxed for years and my hair would always stay on the surface of water and be dry
I have hair that has just past waist length and I haven't used a wide tooth comb in YEARS. Not only it did nothing for me but I found that because of the frustration of not being able to go through my hair I would be rough and it caused me to have a lot breakage. I thought I was the only one lol until I stumbled upon a natural hair coach's video that basically explained why we need to stop using wide tooth combs for our natural hair. It is better to use our fingers or a brush. She basically said that to understand why this tool is not the best you need to understand the basics of WHY we detangle our hair.
The 1st reason is to REALIGN the hair, from this alignment you will see curl formation. This also results in products being evenly distributed on the hair. A brush like the Tangle Teezer is great to because it has small flexible teeth that allows the hair to be easily realigned. A wide tooth comb with its big rigid teeth simply cannot realign the hair properly.
The 2nd reason is to remove shed hair, because our hair is so tightly coiled shed hair easily get stuck and again because of its teeth size and rigidity a wide tooth comb also doesn't remove shed hair. You might see a few come out with it but the large majority of them will actually remain in your hair, you will also notice a lot of small broken hair. Overtime, knots will accumulate,. Also this type of comb is not able to pull the hair thot when you use it, it is simply too big. As a result, your shed hair will actually create more knots in your hair. So if you have only been using a wide tooth comb there is a great chance that a lot of shed hair have been stuck in there for a while. The day you decide to properly remove them you could loose up to 20% of your length.
very well said. I have read all your comments and it makes so much sense. I guess we have done a lot of things for years without truly considering their purslane whether they will truly serve us. your length is GOALS❤️❤️❤️
I actually use a tail comb to take down my hairdos. I think my hair is high porosity. 2 sprays of leave-in is enough but I loose that hydration sooner than I can spell hair (exaggerated of course 😊).
Natural Nadine talked about our hair being protein sensitive bcos it is highly porous in the sense that some of the proteins are large and binds to a lot of weak spots in our hair making it accept a lot of protein
I actually have my hair out all year round . I keep my hair stretched with bantu knots or blowdry and tonged . I am a hairdresser and a products formulator . I use a brush to detangle always.
I don't feel there is a bible when it comes to hair of any texture. It depends on what we consider to be protective. I see protective as a style that protects the ends of our hair, not necessarily a style that adds extensions. Extensions make the style low manipulation but not necessarily protective which is why many people who wear extensions never achieve long hair. The best detangling tool is the one that doesn't snag and break our hair. Personally, since I shampoo my scalp every 3 - 4 days, and don't have a problem detangling. I use my fingers first and then a comb or a brush. Porosity isn't very important to me. I make sure my hair is completely wet before I add shampoo, and when I add products I add enough to saturate my hair. Personally, I don't want greasy hair and don't use grease, oil, or butter. It has nothing to do with this trend of no raw oils or butter. My mom never used it on our hair so I don't like the feel of my hair with them. I do use leave-in, creams, and gel depending on the style. It's fine for my products to have oil and/or butter in the ingredients. Protein and bond builders are regular parts of my routine since my hair isn't protein-sensitive and they add strength and protection against damage.
Girl people act like grease is a disease we used to use grease long time ago and it grew our hair down our back so that’s why I went back to Greece blue magic is my best-friend❤😂
I think Enitan of "Healthy Hair by Enitan" in the UK also discussed that the only people that have low porosity hair are new borns or someone that has just undergone a Big Chop. She is a certified trichologist.

😂 Im just here with a question...whenever I do a protein treatment my hair feels nice and soft ...however moisturizing treatment does nothing...could it be that im high porosity?🤔
I think the problem with most of us is expexting something to do much as iys actually do like of you expect full detangle with wide tooth combs your lying to yourself😅 Each tool has the ability to do at its own level like a protective is actually different to everybody as much as you say the prep is difficult but it depends on how you prep and what you think you mist do for a prep. So it goes every tool every style is differwnt and perfom differently the important thing is to find what works for you and keeps that! case
I think on protein treatment did a video on the right protein treatment. And u right choose the right protein treatment makes a difference…I will avoid aphogee protein treatment (it is high molecular protein treatment and can cause breakage especially when is too crunchy)
I have some great hair products all made by me ! Can I send you some to review ? Safi amani is the brand , I am uk based and launching in Kenya soon . Thanks
Uhhh if there is an issue with hands then just use combs I’d say. Your health and wellbeing combed first. Just do it gently, take your time and with quality tools. Section the hair and chip at it slowly 🌺
Hey sis!! Love your outside the box thinking!!! Protective styles…GIRL!!! The manipulation tho! I am doing braids on my own hair… would love cornrows but too much manipulation! Wide tooth combs a no for me… anything stiff. Brush is a No for me as well. I find that I experience more mid shaft splits on my coils after brushing. I will brush my scalp though 😊. Porosity… I agree but I feel I am lower porosity than high. Protein treatments… I can’t see myself signing up for protein treatments outside of hydrolized protein. My hair SNAPS with even a moderate of hydrolized protein and I CANNOT hydrate adequately for weeks. Detangling with my fingers only for me. I love your content and will watch your experiences closely.
sis there is so much to unpack! Thanks for being real and open minded. let’s see what I find out on these topics. protein always hydrolysed and actually low molecular like silk and rice protein are the best
Wow… I watched that natural Nadine video and now it has caused me to do some digging to. In regards to the porosity water test, I asked ChatGPT to explain it. AI states “The buoyancy of hair is influenced by its density and the presence of air pockets within the hair structure. Kinky or curly hair tends to have a higher density and more trapped air, which can make it more buoyant and cause it to float on water. Additionally, the structure of curly hair might create more surface area, contributing to increased buoyancy.” Girl!!!!

@@kriseme4734 olive oil or jojoba oil. Both are very good but my favorite is jojoba oil. I can use it for my hair as well as my scalp. I also like to use grease
In July of 23 I starting using henna and amla as protein treatments it is necessary to balance with moisture
As for sun protection I started wearing hair wraps and plan to for summer. There are nice silk lined pre wrapped ones.
thanks for sharing. please also share where you got your warps?
I agree with you soooo much about the weighed down hair. I like it. It means moisture to me, which in turn, means possible less breakage.
Yeah right 🤷🏽♀️
I don’t use that type of comb bc I like to use detangler and brushes because they work best for my 4c hair but every one uses what’s best for them
great 👍🏽
I actually lightly detangle my hair with my fingers before using a detagling brush. Also, I always detangle with deep conditioner in my hair after about 20 minutes under the dryer. I use a wide tooth comb during styling, but not for detangling purposes. After putting whatever stying product in my, i then run the comb through once and then style.
Love it if you love it 😻
I also like heavy products. My hair is lightweight and airy naturally. It defies gravity naturally. However, I like a bit of hang time so I prefer heavy products to lightweight ones like mousses.
Thanks for sharing!!
I could not be switching up styles because my hair won’t let me and my scab won’t let me. I have to do one style and leave it because if not, my head is going to start hurting and I’ll leave that style up for a whole to threemonths.
great strategy

Wow info packed video . I’ve seen that video in us being high porosity instead of low. It’s gonna take me a minute to wrap my head on that one . I feel like my hair is lower in porosity in the front than in the back . My curls are tighter in the back then front. I’m reevaluating if I’m protein sensitive bad experiences in the past have made me wary but I am adding protein back in my routine . I’m not doing any hard protein more of a protein moisture balance type of thing and I do that once a month. I agree about the protective styling about doing it your self and controlling the manipulation. I think sometimes the added hair can cause allergic reactions.
adding protein back in is a great idea. low molecular proteins like silk protein are great for not hardening the hair
so true ! when I big chopped this year and I did the porosity test my hair swiftly went into the water! I was like OMG they lied to me about being low porosity or what ?! I was relaxed for years and my hair would always stay on the surface of water and be dry
the test is so volatile 🤦🏽♀️
I love your beautiful hair❤❤keep up the great hair journey ❤I’m my hair journey and I’m trying to get a routine on washing my hair
@@Tamekabags45 Keep going sis 🥰
I never tried finger detangling before but I will definitely give it a try ❤
it’s a game changer
I actually use a tail comb to take down my hairdos. I think my hair is high porosity. 2 sprays of leave-in is enough but I loose that hydration sooner than I can spell hair (exaggerated of course 😊).
ahahahh funny😅. yeah sounds like high to me
My hair is def high porosity and I didn’t know it until I got protein overload multiple times
wow 😮
Natural Nadine talked about our hair being protein sensitive bcos it is highly porous in the sense that some of the proteins are large and binds to a lot of weak spots in our hair making it accept a lot of protein
makes so much sense!!!
@@CoilyDiaries she said we should use small molecular proteins that will still bind and make the hair flexible enough to accept moisture
I love it when my hair is weighing down unlike light
yeah!,
I’m a finger then detangling brush girly because I can feel my hair better then get it fully detangled❤❤❤❤❤❤
❤️❤️❤️
I actually have my hair out all year round . I keep my hair stretched with bantu knots or blowdry and tonged . I am a hairdresser and a products formulator . I use a brush to detangle always.
interesting
What are some products you use to keep your hair hydrated and moisturized?
@@kriseme4734 see the description and the video on my staple products 🌺
@kriseme4734 safi amani healthy hair range is amazing .
Protein and bond builders are regular parts of my routine since my hair isn't protein-sensitive and they add strength and protection against damage.
thanks for sharing this. you have made many points I agree with. love how your routine is working for you 🌺
I love weighed down hair, too; I love to "feel" my hair. Greasy hair is a no-no for me, though.
totally understand 🌺
Well, each his own, but I have to have that deep conditioner and that and that leave it in conditioner🎉❤❤❤❤❤
👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Girl people act like grease is a disease we used to use grease long time ago and it grew our hair down our back so that’s why I went back to Greece blue magic is my best-friend❤😂
glad your hair loves it!
I think Enitan of "Healthy Hair by Enitan" in the UK also discussed that the only people that have low porosity hair are new borns or someone that has just undergone a Big Chop. She is a certified trichologist.
wow!!! please share the reference

Yeah, I know I wanted the scab scrapers ❤
👍🏽👍🏽
😂 Im just here with a question...whenever I do a protein treatment my hair feels nice and soft ...however moisturizing treatment does nothing...could it be that im high porosity?🤔
do you mean deep conditioning g treatment? feels ineffective? Is this all the time or just when used with protein?
i believe Porosity can change. i don't know if it's from the different wash day products or hormones
wear an tear mostly… manipulation, heat, U V
So I wanted to know so when you do finger detangling so after you do finger dangling, can you like comb your hair out with a comb after?
personal preference really
I think the problem with most of us is expexting something to do much as iys actually do like of you expect full detangle with wide tooth combs your lying to yourself😅 Each tool has the ability to do at its own level like a protective is actually different to everybody as much as you say the prep is difficult but it depends on how you prep and what you think you mist do for a prep. So it goes every tool every style is differwnt and perfom differently the important thing is to find what works for you and keeps that! case
I see what you mean and agree with much of what you said
I like natural Nadine video on high porosity.
it’s amazing!
I think on protein treatment did a video on the right protein treatment. And u right choose the right protein treatment makes a difference…I will avoid aphogee protein treatment (it is high molecular protein treatment and can cause breakage especially when is too crunchy)
Very interesting thoughts 👌🏾👌🏾!
hehehe😆
Yeah, I like to have weight down products and my hair so it can lay down and don’t blow away in the wind😂
that’s a positive!
moisturizer hair moisturizer hair moisturizer hair always
😅
I have some great hair products all made by me ! Can I send you some to review ? Safi amani is the brand , I am uk based and launching in Kenya soon . Thanks
hi there, congratulations 🥳 on launching your brand. please send me an email for business enquires.
Great content :)
Glad you think so!
OK if you have problems with your hands finger detailing is a problem what do your suggest then
Uhhh if there is an issue with hands then just use combs I’d say.
For me brush is big no, no🙅my finger is better for me of course every body’s hair is different
agreed 👍🏽
Thanks
