    What a great video John - insane action! I’ll add the light tackle part adds to to the fun but doesn’t seem to hurt the fish. This would not have been as much fun with a 5 ounce sinker with a traditional blackfish rig and stouter tackle.

    Skinner catches more fish before work then most people catch in a week.

    NIce to see you back in the kayak in skinnier water! I'd love to see how you set up on a spot, what it looks like on the finder and how far up current you go before dropping. Do you reset if you don't see the rock top depth on the finder or trust you're close enough? I found this frustrating fishing a well known rubble field last season. I did better on pilings & rockpiles.

  • @Teach_1ne

    Ironic how you said they sometimes pick up the jig and swim away with it. I noticed this for the first time last weekend in 10-15 feet of water. I was using a rig though and a 2 oz sinker. Never saw that before.... the line angling out like that haha.

    John and all you fellow NoFo anglers, I am in Greenport and was wondering where you think would be an ideal place to launch the kayak from to get quickly into good rocky taug areas. Truman's and Kenny's are convenient with the parking right there at the beach but it looks like it might be a long paddle to fertile grounds. Was thinking about Southold Town Beach since it is rocky east and west of there. Or maybe Goldsmith's.

      Craig from CT not necessarily true Craig - we’ve caught a ton of 6 to 10 pound tog on 10 pound test. It’s all about the drag. You can’t have it on super tight....

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 років тому

      10# is an excellent choice in many places, but if you're in a situation where you're trying to keep big ones out of a wreck, then I'd go to 15 or 20#.

    • @j121212100
      @j121212100 6 років тому +1

      Where i fish for tog, i use 80 pound test with 50 lb mono leader. Just more likely to retain your braid and loose just the hook or sinker when snagged and it is tough enough to rub against the rocks all season.

    Hi john if I'm in a 28-40 foot boat , how do you determine where to find spots on structure seems from your video it needs to be precise ? Thank you in advance , how do you look for the best black fish spots ? Or what makes a good spot good?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 років тому +2

      Pick your depth in an area you know has some boulders, cruise around until you find one and put a jig down on it. Repeat until you find fish. Avoid rocks already on charts. Those get picked over. Undisturbed rocks harbor many more fish.

    • @jimgreenfield1320
      @jimgreenfield1320 6 років тому

      GREAT Q & A. Was wondering same thing. Never ever did it occur to me that the rocks on the charts could be picked over like that. Still curious about that... don't the togs move in as the water cools? Wouldn't they just replenish these spots?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 років тому

      Those togs are around the rocks all summer. They're just not feeding much. This is a summer dive: ua-cam.com/video/VCPOhS5QEZs/v-deo.html

    Hey john i see you use a lot of 10 11 foot lamiglas rods rated way over 3/4 in your videos and it may seem like a dumb question for you but is it possible to get away with using 3/4 bucktails and sp minnows with really beefy rods like that? Just for futre reference.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 років тому

      I mostly use my 9-footer. I used a 10 for a few trips with pencils this fall, but otherwise only used that rod for eeling. 3/4-ounce is a little light for most 11-footers.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 років тому +1

      It's marginally OK. Trim a little off the tip if it feels too soft. Those rods actually have pretty good backbone near the handle. I prefer 90 minutes either side of either slack current.

    Love blackfish. How do you hold bottom with one ounce? When you go on a party boat they say you need 8

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 років тому

      Thin line (10# test). There are some areas with heavy current where this will not work, but there are many places to fish for blacks where it does work.

  • @seaoats24
    @seaoats24 6 років тому

    John why do you prefer spinning over conventional for jigging blackfish?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 років тому

      Great question. I wish I had a very solid answer, but I can only say there's a preference for moving the fish immediately with my hand already on the reel. I can't do that with a right-handed conventional, and I'm not comfortable with a left handed conventional with the heavier weights that require more leverage on the rod.

    • @jackh7545
      @jackh7545 6 років тому

      John, Similar question. When I do fluke fishing with quantum, I use right hand (I am right handed) to hold the rod and lift when fish is on and moved to left and start to reel with right hand. Because I am not comfortable reeling with left hand. In black fish, do you think it will work with quantum? What I heard, you have to lift the rod quickly in black fish , so you don't waist your time to move the rod from right hand to left?
