The emperor’s death scene horrified me as a child, but I still watched this movie more times than I can count. I live not far from the waterfall Jen crosses. It’s called Gordale Scar. It’s located outside the village of Malham in North Yorkshire. It contains two waterfalls and has overhanging limestone cliffs over 330 feet (100 m) high. The gorge could have been formed by water from melting glaciers or a cavern collapse. The stream flowing through the scar is Gordale Beck, which on leaving the gorge flows over Janet's Foss (another waterfall & believed to be named after the fairy queen who lives in the cave behind the waterfall) before joining Malham Beck 2 miles (3 km) downstream to form the River Aire. Malham is also home to Malham Cove. The cove was formed by a large Ice-age river that fell at this point as a cataract. The water drop was 80 m (260 ft) high and more than 300 m (980 ft) wide. The water flowing over the waterfall created the curved shape of the cove because the lip was more heavily eroded than the sides. During the floods of December 2015, the waterfall flowed again for the first time in centuries. The cove & the limestone pavement appeared in Harry Potter The Deathly Hallows Pt1 (Harry & Hermione camp at the top of the cove). The film was shot at Elstree Studios from April-September 1981, and exterior scenes were shot in the Scottish Highlands; Gordale Scar, North Yorkshire, and Twycross, Leicestershire, England.
I absolutely loved Henson. Muppets, Dark Crystal, Labyrinth is one of my favourite films ever...and you have to remember these films were made without CGI. The special effects were pretty basic, and the characters were all puppets, the big planetarium thing at Augra's was a moving prop! Absolutely incredible how much skill & effort went into making these films.
I was waiting for Fizzgig to jump out roaring to see how you would react. Priceless. The funny thing is after this, you find out he's just a tiny thing. This was one of my favorite films when I was a teen.
I watched this film when I was 6 years old at an Old Movie House in my hometown that’s still exists today. My aunt took me there to go see it and told me my eyes were glued to the screen. From that point on, it’s been my favorite film ever since. Most people who grew up with CGI are not too kind to this film. Thank you for being kind in your reaction, Kev. You are definitely a person who has not lost their inner-child.

Jim Henson wanted to do big picture movies, like this, with _Muppets,_ but studios told him No One would pay good money to see a bunch of puppets that they could watch on television, so Jim made this picture, pretty much, on his own; when it was finished he took it to the studio heads, of various studios, to show them what could be done with _Muppets._ _It was said,_ that when the studio executives finished watching the screening, they all got up and without saying a word to him walked out. Jim Henson was devastated, but the "studios" didn't like the fact that an _individual_ could do so much on their own without the backing of a large studio. People said Henson never got over how they didn't "like him" for showing them up like that, which was never his intention.

Aw Kev, this movie is one of my favourites. The Netflix prequel show Age of Resistance is also so well done I highly recommend it. It's becoming a cult classic after Netflix cancelled it, the fools!!!

It's just such an artistic world. I know the movie is a tad slow paced due to the time it was made in, but it's still one of my favorite films. It's so aesthetic and interesting. The prequels are definitely worth a viewing as well.
Had the privilege of seeing it on release when I was 6, then visiting an exhibition of many of the puppets (garthim, Chamberlin, Mystics) in Melbourne. I vividly remember the entire audience jumping when Fizzgig made his appearance.
The skesis costumes were actually rigged with small TV monitors inside that were used for the puppeteer's inside to know where they were and where they had to be for filming. Back in that day things like that were unheard of. This movie will always be one of my favorite childhood movies right up there with starwars, the last unicorn and a movie series no kid should watch 1987's predator.
I was 7 when this movie came out. I was obsessed with it. I had the comic, the trading cards, the story book. I loved this movie. Kira was my first childhood crush. 🤣 Star Wars and the Dark Crystal were my two nerd movies as a kid.
I was 9 years old when this movie came out back in 1982. I would see the trailers played on a Video display in a seating area in a mall in California. I still love this movie to this day. You should also check out Labyrinth also done by Jim Henson.
i watched a show about the making of this movie and they said that in the shots where Jen and Kira are in the distance or you see them from behind....they used people for those shots instead of the puppets.
Moss can actually be used to help clot wounds and form scabs faster, granted they're either chewed or mashed up into a paste and wrapped securely. (Not just any moss, though. It's a special kind of moss that I forgot the name of)

I LOVE seeing people's reaction to this film! 🤣 I watched this when I was about 9yrs old on a wobbly VHS at a friend's house. It was like someone took a camera through a portal to another world. It made me think, made me dream and it's still stuck with me 20 years later. If you haven't already, I highly recommend the new Netflix series, "The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance". It's a 10-part prequel series that goes into far more detail, lore and mythology that the film barely scratched the surface of and the visual production work is incredible, some of the best puppetry I've ever seen :) Anyway, totally loved seeing your enthusiasm for this! Awesome stuff! ⭐
When the three suns converged the power generated split the crystal into 2 parts the dark and the light. The dark power stayed in the large part of the crystal in the castle and it obeys the Skeksis, and the light power went with the small shard. When the crystal split, it split the guardians of the crystal as well and those beings split into to separate halves or beings, the Skeksis and the Mystics, creating a dark group of beings and a light group of beings. Healing the crystal means rejoining the shard to the big portion of the crystal. This movie was revolutionary for it's time, but still to this day it is a real masterpiece. Henson wanted to make an adult centered movie with only puppets as actos and no humans. This whole movie is done practically of course with no CGi as it wasn't around yet. You probably saw that Jim Henson did several of the puppetry performances, but did you notice that Frank Oz was also several of the characters. You'll recognize Frank Oz as Yoda, both the performance and the voice. This was actually one of my favorite movies as a kid. If you liked it you should watch Labyrinth and another great fantasy movie was the movie LEGEND...another favorite of mine.

May sound weird but their is so many occult tales told through symbolism and variations on stories in this movie. In the mini series it just gets so obvious I had to laugh.
One of the earliest memories of watching a film at the cinema. I should have been terrified at such a young age, but I just fell in love with it. Had the VHS copy for years, then it left my life until a few years ago when the Blu-ray came out. It still hasn't lost any of its power. Utterly unique. If you have netflix there is a new mini series out that predates the movies called dark crystal age of resistance. Skek-Sil (Chamberlin) is just as sneaky there as he was in this movie and there a few even scarier skeksis like Skek-Mal (the hunter) featured as well as Skek-var (the original general) who makes the mistake of crossing Skeksil. Skek-Mal's mystic counterpart the archer also appears in a few episodes as well.
Wooooo!!!! LOVE this film!! I couldn't get enough of it when I was little. They made a TV series for it a year or 2 ago that was a a fun homage to this film. To this day I still make the Mmmmmmmm!!! noise that the main Skeksis makes all the time. The scope and scale of the world just drag you in immediately and the sense of exploration is dripping in every scene. The Never Ending Story is pretty similar to this too if you've never seen that either might be worth a watch.
I am going to make that noise now for at least a month whenever I get the chance lmao I remember The Never Ending Story but as I watched it as a kid it might be worth re-watching :)

You mentioned growing up on Fraggle Rock. The creatures that eventually were made into the Fraggles were originally made to appear in The Dark Crystal as allies that help Jem and Kira gain access to the castle, but that part was cut out and all the puppets and such became Fraggle Rock.
warning this film has same mistake as episode 4 Star Wars film it started at end of story then Netflix teamed up with current owner of Jim Hanson production to do prequel series which was cancelled because of covid and lockdowns and nobody was watching because we already know ending. so now we have beginning and ending of story but it is missing middle part of story.
Fun Fact: the original movie was meant to be a bit more...artistic. In the way that Jen was the only one who would speak English the Skeksis and Mystics and all the other creatures would have their own language. But, first screenings did poorly, and so they had to record lines and dub over the performances on film
Jim Hanson was always hands on person when it came to films and shows he made with sesame street puppet workshop which helped him if he fell behind schedule in making of film or show when he was alive but he been dead since 90's
If you loved this, you should 100% watch the Netflix prequel. The dark Crystal: Age of resistance. It’s AMAZING and tells the story of the beginning, when the Gelfling were still living in their thousands.
One of my childhood favourite films of all time, the series was really good as well... If you get the chance read the comics and graphic novels as well, they fill in more of the gaps of the Gelfling history, the comics that came after the netflix series... not so much but still worth a read.
One of those childhood films I watched endlessly. Along with Labyrinth and even The NeverEnding Story (not Henson, but easily could’ve been). I agree the Netflix prequel show is pretty exceptional. Gives you the detailed history of this world, and the puppeteering is next level, with a great score. All three will be on my 1000 film project list as nostalgic favorites.
I am watching Labyrinth tomorrow :) really looking forward to it! I remember seeing The NeverEnding Story as a child but can hardly remember any of it! a boy on a horse is all that's coming back lol.

@@SofaandChill They played it at a local theatre a few yrs back and I took my kids to see it. Didn't realize I had lacked as a mom in showing them that movie til then. I thought maybe they'd think it was dated, but they absolutely fell in love with it. Had to buy it on Amazon. My 13 yo daughter re-watches it like once a month or so.
If still reading comments. The lore of dark Crystal from the comics is very interesting. It’s pretty much the origins of thra and augra. The crystal is s living being that one day it flew through space, found a sun and sang. When it did it created the world around it. In this new world with new life it needed someone to monitor and tend to it so it created augra. Augra roamed the world till one day new life was created being the gelflings. She infused with knowledge from the crystal helped guide and cared for them and they called her mother. Time pass by and eventually the convergence happened and you get the gist of what happened from there.
Also the comic expands more on the crystal with others existing it and they act as gateways to one another. The creators mentioned one day they may go more into that with covering other worlds created by the crystals.
You KNOW now I gotta say it. This was mine and my sister's favorite movie growing up and I hope you check out The dark crystal age of resistance sometime in the future

You mentioned growing up on Fraggle Rock. The creatures that eventually were made into the Fraggles were originally made to appear in The Dark Crystal as allies that help Jem and Kira gain access to the castle, but that part was cut out and all the puppets and such became Fraggle Rock.

warning this film has same mistake as episode 4 Star Wars film it started at end of story then Netflix teamed up with current owner of Jim Hanson production to do prequel series which was cancelled because of covid and lockdowns and nobody was watching because we already know ending. so now we have beginning and ending of story but it is missing middle part of story.
Fun Fact: the original movie was meant to be a bit more...artistic. In the way that Jen was the only one who would speak English the Skeksis and Mystics and all the other creatures would have their own language. But, first screenings did poorly, and so they had to record lines and dub over the performances on film
Jim Hanson was always hands on person when it came to films and shows he made with sesame street puppet workshop which helped him if he fell behind schedule in making of film or show when he was alive but he been dead since 90's
If you loved this, you should 100% watch the Netflix prequel. The dark Crystal: Age of resistance. It’s AMAZING and tells the story of the beginning, when the Gelfling were still living in their thousands.
Did you happen to catch that the Skekses were eating the Nebrie that pulls Jen from the swamp?
This is by far my favorite movie since I was a kid, and I never got scared by it. Probably right next to the first Jurassic Park.
The prequel series is worth the effort.

One of my childhood favourite films of all time, the series was really good as well... If you get the chance read the comics and graphic novels as well, they fill in more of the gaps of the Gelfling history, the comics that came after the netflix series... not so much but still worth a read.
One of those childhood films I watched endlessly. Along with Labyrinth and even The NeverEnding Story (not Henson, but easily could’ve been). I agree the Netflix prequel show is pretty exceptional. Gives you the detailed history of this world, and the puppeteering is next level, with a great score. All three will be on my 1000 film project list as nostalgic favorites.
I am watching Labyrinth tomorrow :) really looking forward to it! I remember seeing The NeverEnding Story as a child but can hardly remember any of it! a boy on a horse is all that's coming back lol.
@@SofaandChill It’s funny the few images we have of things we saw long ago. You’re right about The NeverEnding Story, yet the boy and a horse is such a small percentage of the film. Similar in how someone described Avatar to you: a bunch of blue people running around. Ha. After seeing that technically advanced and amazing epic, would that really be an accurate description of what’s really going on?

@@SofaandChill They played it at a local theatre a few yrs back and I took my kids to see it. Didn't realize I had lacked as a mom in showing them that movie til then. I thought maybe they'd think it was dated, but they absolutely fell in love with it. Had to buy it on Amazon. My 13 yo daughter re-watches it like once a month or so.

The lore of dark Crystal from the comics is very interesting. It’s pretty much the origins of thra and augra.
The crystal is s living being that one day it flew through space, found a sun and sang. When it did it created the world around it. In this new world with new life it needed someone to monitor and tend to it so it created augra. Augra roamed the world till one day new life was created being the gelflings. She infused with knowledge from the crystal helped guide and cared for them and they called her mother.
Time pass by and eventually the convergence happened and you get the gist of what happened from there.
Also the comic expands more on the crystal with others existing it and they act as gateways to one another. The creators mentioned one day they may go more into that with covering other worlds created by the crystals.

DC is a really good, semi-serious fantasy film. By contrast, Labyrinth is more lighthearted and faster paced.
