A surprising but very wise choice.. i honestly thought you`d have bought a Rover 75 or MGZT with the V6 engine, for a 20 year old it does look in very good condition, obviously a cherished car..

Great choice of car, and I just love that combination of color and wheels. I have owned a huge number of cars but it was only 18 months ago that I bought the first car I ever owned that colour, I polished it and it really popped. Stunning colour in my opinion. Congratulations on buying this, I can really see how much you love it.

      Thanks as ever Andrew!
I did consider an E39, as I think they’re even better looking than the E46, but they’re just larger and generally more expensive!

The E46 is one of the great designs. I remember the dad of a girl at my primary school had a gold saloon in 1998 with black door handles and the olde world-looking mirror chrome multi -spoke wheels. I thought it looked absolutely fantastic, and they've never bettered it! Also, I really don't think that any 3 series before it looked as good. I love old classics, but the E46 really has a place in my heart. Good choice.

One of the best BMW’s ever made, had two E45’s and truly loved them both. 328CI first then a 330CI m sport which was great. Enjoy, quite the contrast from the Metro’s and to say I was shocked to see this as your new car is an understatement!! Looking forward to future updates

Really enjoyed this video and congratulations on the purchase. The so called “old man” spec is right up to my street too. Indeed well cared manual six cyl cars are becoming scarce and you got a great one. I had a manual coupe not long ago in the same spec too and it was fantastic and, not expensive to run and maintain. I will look forward to more videos.

BMWs have never appealed to me, but when I saw this one I kind of changed my mind. It's the colour that did it, combined with those wheels and the styling, it looks very desirable to me. I think you made a great choice.

Congratulations Ed. A real beauty. I had a lowly 318SE many years ago (registered in 2000). A mint green colour and light grey cloth upholstery. A superbly smooth and refined car, now I have a SUV 🚙 As for faults, my 3 series had cooling system issues (weak plastics!), rear bushes and front passenger window motor. Aside from that it was a lovely car.

Great choice Ed - I took the plunge in getting an E91 330i a couple of years ago and it fails to disappoint. Similarly I just love the nostalgia being one of those cars that were everywhere during my childhood. To be able to drive a 'childhood' car feels so much more special than any other modern car. The last of the NA sixes just can't be beaten and you can still have fun with them without worrying about losing your licence (or control) unlike the modern turbo sixes! Great cruisers, but also comes alive when you're looking for some fun. The smoothness and the linear feel as the revs build...Enjoy!

Very good choice. My Mum has exactly the same 2002 in BMW 325 that she has had from new (hers is dark green)
Every time she gets it serviced at her local garage, the guy in the garage asks "Are you sure you don't want to sell it to me?" Which tell you that if he wants it, it must be good.
    Spares are available
It started on Xmas day and got her over here when the battery on her X1 didnt't work.

Great vid and super to witness the enthusiasm for proper, pre-Bangle BMW straight-6 motors. I’m responding from the perspective of having owned and run:
    E36 323i, 1998 SE saloon, M54 straight-6, 2.5 single Vanos, 5-speed manual. 5 years.
    E46 330d, 2002 Sport saloon, M57 straight-6, 2.9 turbo, 185bhp, 5-speed manual, 3 years.
    E46 330d, 2005 Sport saloon, M57N straight-6, 3.0 turbo, 204bhp, 6-speed manual, 7-years.
The manual box option on 330d being quite rare to find of course.
Just parted with the last 330d in October, as can’t justify running it, now I’m retired and don’t do the Yorkshire to Watford or Telford weekly commuting any more. Plus it did have some issues. (Now running another “old man car” in the shape of a Skoda Yeti SEL 2017 TDi 150bhp, 6-speed manual. As all the cars I could need rolled into one).
Agree nearly everything you said about an E46, styling, etc. and the only thing you can really replace a straight-6 BMW with is another straight-6 BMW. After all, the straight-6 configuration is how BMW established themselves as an en engine manufacturer during WW1. (The Yeti isn’t a replacement as I ran another 2010 Yeti as second car before getting the 2017 version.) The diesels were great for the weekly mileages I was doing, and had enormous torque to rival an M3.
Can’t agree your disdain for the Sport spec however. Those multi adjustable seats in the Sport compared to the SE, were superbly comfortable. Especially for anyone longer in the thigh, where you could adjust the length of the thigh support. Swap out the original 18” wheels with staggered front and rear widths for 17” SE wheels with taller sidewall tyres and you get very near SE level of ride comfort with superb B-road handling and no loss of motorway mile munching ability.
Not sure if I’m comfortable with the E39 5-series like “turbine” wheels on an E46? They could grow on me though? I still have 2 full sets of 17” SE E46 7-spoke wheels. As I ran winter tyres on one set. Which totally transformed the RWD car’s ability on snow, ice, and winter wet roads.
Perhaps we should talk? PM maybe?

    @andrewmoorhouse687 Рік тому +1

Great to see how delighted you are with your new car. I’ve had quite a few BM’s over the last few years and, with only one exception, all have been straight sixes of various flavours. I always think you buy these cars for their engine and the rest of the car comes free. Luckily the rest of the car isn’t bad either! As you say, they can be remarkably economical, on longer journeys especially, or fast when you want them to be. I had my, now gone, M235i up to a legal 165mph on the German autobahn and it was rock steady and, a bit of wind noise apart, amazing refined and calm. I was even able to listen to Kraftwerk playing Autobahn at the time! A bit crass, I know, but funny! There’s a lot to love about them in 6 cylinder guise, that’s for sure.

My first car was a 1982 BMW 320i. It was an absolutely incredible car, and was as reliable as a Toyota Camry. The build quality was amazing, and it felt like a new car even after I put 100,000 miles on it. In 1982 these were popular cars, but BMW had yet to go insane with their prices. It was more money than most American 2 door hardtop coupes, but not as expensive as a Mercedes or Porsche. You really felt like you got an incredible bargain. Being a mechanic I was able to work on and maintain the car quite easily, it was very logically designed and not overly complex. I did own a 1984 Porsche 928 for a year, which was truly mind blowing to drive, but it was far too complicated to work on, and the electrical systems were insane and often failed. It got sold, but I kept the BMW. The BMW also proved itself by being hard to kill, I drove from my home in Connecticut to California six times, numerous drives to Key West, dozens of trips to Quebec City and Montreal IN WINTER, one trip to Alaska, and it never left me stranded. Rust would’ve been a problem had I not been diligent about keeping the undercarriage clean. The stainless steel exhaust system was probably the best investment I made in that car.

    I had a '98 (T) E46 323i.
It was crap :) Well what do you expect for £100? Pages and pages of faults.
I bought it off a neighbour just for seeing what could be repaired for free or very low cost. Which was most of the faults.
I scrapped it for £250 a couple of years later.
    I had a couple of E30 3 series, a basic '87 (D) 316 (carb not injection) and an '88 (NI reg) 325i SE.
Got to say the 316 was the better car though, manual rack had so much feel.
Electronic carb was amazing once set up right.
The 325i had been cammed up (not by me) which spoilt the relaxing driveability and replaced it with neck snapping acceleration.
That was my first car with power steering.
    I was unimpressed.
Compared to the 316 with it's manual rack, it felt like there were a pair of bungee straps linking the steering wheel to the front wheels.
I've also had an E34 525tds SE, very strange torque curve for a diesel, but pulled right to the redline.
Unfortunately it put a leg out of bed at just short of 250k.

Beautiful car on a gorgeous colour. A few words of advice:
    1) These cars do like to rot, so an annual trip to Krown Rustproofing and a semi-annual wash and wax to keep it looking good.
    2) Tak off the plastic sill trim and make sure of zero rust. Once it is solid, spray on rubber stone guard before reinstalling the sill trim.
    3) Do not skimp on tyres. High quality tyres, such as the Michelin Defender or comparable, are a must. A second set of wheels, this time steel, with really good winter tyres. Nokian Haakappilliitta or Guislaved is the way to go.
    4) Drive like an old man until you get used to the rear wheel drive in sub-optimal conditions. These cars car be tail happy.
I hope it gives you a long and happy life with it. DO NOT be late with an oil change, ever. Be on top of the service or the VANOS can pack it in, and that is EXPENSIVE! I mention the handling in particular because here, at least, it seems that BMW lost the plot when it came to road holding. More than once I have been following a BMW down the slip road to the dual carriageway and damned near T-Boned a BMW that lost grip and went sideways. It is pretty bad when a 1990 Volvo 240DL Estate on winter tyres holds the road better than a 3 or 4 year old Beemer.

Love the car! I had an E46 325i SE manual back in the day and loved it. It was brisk rather than fast, had a classy leather interior, velvet smooth engine and being an SE the ride was comfortable. It's ideal for your needs. Good luck with it.
PS I agree, it's the last of the good-looking BMWs , the front end of the latest lot reminds me of Bugs Bunny.

Fuel injected cars should have better throttle response than carburettor equipped cars. I wouldn't be surprised if the BMW has an electronic throttle though. Once manufacturers started fitting these a disconnect happened between the pedal and the throttle as an ECU was inserted between the two. Unfortunately these ECUs think they know better than you do. The one on my Ford Focus regularly tries to kill me when pulling out, if there's a trace of wheelspin it cuts the power and pats itself on the back as I nearly have a side impact collision. The one I had on a Mercedes didn't try to kill me but there was a stupidly long delay between pressing the throttle and the throttle actually opening.

I can't say I've ever driven a fuel injected car with throttle response as good as a carburettor-fed car. They're much better these days, but stuff of this era just can't match the responsiveness of my Metros or something like the Alfasud.

Very nice choice of car, I had one of these M54 engines in a E39 and it was excellent apart from the oil consumption.
But my personal favourite is my current BMW E39 530d 2.9 6 cylinder diesel with a 5 speed manual box goes just as well as the petrol but with better MPG which suits me more.

I’ve got 2. A 323ci & a 330ci. Both auto. Manual are not common. Both mine are tidy. But yours looks absolutely immaculate. Rear arches can be a problem for rust. Your mileage? Both mine are under 115k. I think the coupe’s are worth the extra

Ahh yes the classic BMW 3 series.
I love these engines. Hence I own a BMW 328i luxury line down here in Australia. The 328i is the sweet spot for me. As in Australia at least it came with 208 BHP as standard. Mine is in luxury line trim with leather & wood. No folding seats how stingy, we get them as standard here. Yes it also has a manual gearbox.
£2995 is dirt cheap for one those.
As in Australia where I am. My 328i luxury line cost me the equivalent of £7999. You got a bargain.

Lovely car mate! Been watching you a while. I absolutely love BMWs of this era but I used to hate BMWs lol. Bit of a story I've had loads of cars and in 2017 I bought a brand new Merc A45 AMG. Fast forward to 2019 and a mate of mine was getting rid of her car (a 2000 330ci Coupe), she wanted something better on fuel and newer, being an old car she didn't want much for it she even said as a mate I could have it for £1,000, I wasn't really interested until I saw the interior, factory sat-nav, electric memory seats etc. Then she said it was a 3.0, well I drove it and had to have it! I had it alongside my A45 until the end of 2020 when the 330 failed it's MOT badly, plus had so much rust by this point I had to sell it off cheap and cut my losses although I made most of my original £1K back! But I was so sad I just loved that car! Still got the Mercedes. Then a year later (Dec 2021) I was in a position to sell the Merc in order to unlock more money for a bigger house deposit, I thought just get something cheap. I just couldn't get the E46 out my head so I sold the merc and went ahead and bought a 2004 330ci coupe facelift M-Sport with 90k on the clock, cream interior absolutely top sped cost me £6k which seems like a lot but it's a rare peach rust free, low mileage, full service history and ONE owner, mystic blue metallic and original MV2 alloys. Here we are now a year later I have replaced nearly everything rubber on it as well as lots of other bits, probably not worth the money in terms of the value of the car but what I've done is got a car I absolutely love from an long gone era that's really every bit as tight and reliable as a new car for less money. SO no I won't add that value to the resale but do what makes you happy! I now love 90s and 00s BMWs more than any other cars, although E90/E60 etc aren't my favourite and I definitely don't like anything modern from BMW at all lol! Sorry for the essay just thought I could relate.

Excellent video. I loved my E46 which I had new in Jan 1999. The 6 cylinder engine was a peach. Had to pay a lot extra per month to upgrade as it was a company car for a General Manager grade where I worked, but worth it as it enabled me to have the 2.5 6 cylinder (still only a 323 sadly) engine not the slow 1.9 4 cylinder. I did over 60k miles in less than years in that car before moving jobs (and buying a 3 year old E36 323i coupe privately, later replaced by a 328i M sport cabrio).

The most important thing about your BMW is that it has a twin cam because of the name of your chanel another thing it is a pity about the small bit of rust l know about the continuous battle with rust in the UK l live in Australia although older cars do rust in Australia cars around 25 years old don't rust my 25 year old toyota hilux has no rust issues as for sun foofs not popular in Australia

The style 73 were an option on the e46. E46 and e39 wheels aren’t a straight swap because the e39 has a larger centre bore on the wheels so you need hub adapters, or spigots.

Brill! And you are the only person who agrees with me that BMWs are not the wonder kind of reliability. In my experience as a former tester, there were more issues with them than any other car. And driving about I saw more on the back of tow trucks than any other make! But. like you, the 6 is tops for sound, smoothness and fun! Enjoy. And thanks for years of filling a loneliness gap. Rob

I’m surprised as like many others I thought you’d go for either a Rover 600 or 75 but as I watched the video I understood your reasoning. Ironically I recognised much of this era of BMW that is on a Rover 75 such as the claw bonnet catch poking through the grille or the digital odometer reader. I’ve never seen an MPG live readout on the rev counter dial before & yes style of driving does have a big impact on economy…I’ve scored 40mpg on a 2.5 V6 automatic before it’s doable but you have drive like a grandad! 6 cylinder engines are indeed the perfect balance in my opinion & really suit a cruiser car, more refined than 4 pot engines but not over the top like a roaring V8 performance engine. I’m not keen on BMW’s but this era of late nineties into early 2000’s is the last I find attractive, specifically a 5 series with the very pale green paint & matching leather interior & ideally in estate format…I think Geoff Buys Cars briefly had one? Enjoy the car it is something totally different & that is sometimes healthy to bring variety in life.
