Like it or not, this man deserves all the respect in the world. He's easily one of the most versatile, dedicated, intelligent, positive, and emotionally connected drummers in the history of drumming. This is just one video as part of a larger video with many styles and a larger career as a musical chamaleon. He prefers metal but the more you learn about him the more you realize he takes risks and borrows from many traditions outside of metal constantly. Even here he started playing traditional grip as fast or faster than Buddy Rich (for anyone trying to compare them, which is unfair anyways...). Also, remember the point of this video is speed WITHOUT triggers. There isn't supposed to be any perceptible "feel". There's no time for it here. Judge his "feel" in slower styles where you have room for it. Don't cherry pick. This dude is waaaay too dedicated and humble to get any hate.

He is just absolutely amazing 👏 this isn't his style of music but I don't think there's any style he can't play. I can't believe a human being can actually do what he does on the drums. His abilities far overshadow in my opinion every other drummer on the planet !!!!!! Strong statement yeah, but I've never seen anyone with his type of ability and I've been playing for years and watched as everyone else countless drummers OLIMPICS !!! HAHAHA 😀 He seems to again in my opinion, always outshine others. I'm sure I'm wrong but man !!!! I'm blown away by his talent !!!👍💪
+gcharocks This is an excerpt of a longer video in which he demonstrates a variety of styles. It may be boring and long to some but it will definitely prove that Mangini knows his craft on another level.
I had seen before the whole performance Mike Mangini in this festival , but i cant find anymore . anyone help ? the first preformance i remember Mike play with brush stick
It was supposed to be on a multi-purpose yet simple kit. Part of the point is to show he could play anything on any drumset, even if it isn't the "proper" sound or tuning. He also needs to use it for other styles. This isn't a Dream Theater gig. It was a versatile, cross-over styles clinic. He plays latin music as a lefty in another video in this clinic. This clinic also had an "ok" mix from the board. It sounds thinner than it should. Anyways, he's gotta be able to adjust. As picky as he is, he is also practical and flexible stylistically.
It would be understood more if everyone watch the whole video, this is only a part. He's very much aware of what he's doing. The audio mix is not that great though
The performance is cool and all and I certainly couldn't play any such thing ! Not sure if it's backing track or the mix that's let it down, but it's not helped by a lack of bottom end. it'd be nice to hear it would he envisaged it. But really, it just comes down to this, would I add it my play list ? Probably not.
I love mike but I'm not sure what he wants to accomplish but playing the snare so quite during the "blast beats". Same goes for the kicks as well. I have seen him play better than this.
I was there !!! I sat about 10 row from that stage.... him and Thomas lang was the best on that 3 days festival !! what a beast...and he wasn't just playing but he taught some things.... and oh btw, to do this kind of speed ON A JAZZ SETUP DRUM/drumhead ?!?!?!?!?!?! unreal !
Something about his playing just doesn't excite me. He's a excellent rock drummer, but his style isn't for me. That's why DT doesn't have the appeal it used to for me.
Marco could have won the audition for DT, I liked his playing style as well, maybe he would have fit DT better, but DT chose Mangini for a lot more than just drumming, they were chosing someone that could fit as a person with the rest of the band. Mangini was the best fit.
I love his unique style of drumming... But I don't find any melody that I find in mike's drumming... I don't mean to judge him bit something isn't right😶
I was waiting for Ashton Kutcher to jump out at the end and say you just got punked to the audience, then they would all start laughing, but I guess Mike was serious ?
Mike Mangini literally broke world records for speed. Whether you like him or not "10 times faster" is plain wrong. Also, the point of this one song is to help him demonstrate versatility with different styles. This is part of a longer video with MANY styles and ways of playing the drumset (he even plays completely lefty in another song). Also, idk if you noticed but he literally started using Buddy Rich's left hand technique at a ridiculous speed and a little LOUDER than buddy rich usually played it so... From what I've heard in his drumming and his interviews (as well as his job titles and experience as a world-class teacher) he understands Buddy Rich's drumming way more profoundly than anyone on the internet. He grew up playing and studying his stuff. Don't judge him by this video. If Buddy Rich was playing black/death metal this intensely you'd be very impressed. Mangini is a chameleon. If you watch videos of him through the years you'll learn that his "feel", his grace and his elegance takes many forms and fits into many styles from all over the world and history of drumming. He's known as a metal drummer but has an incredibly vast understanding of what "feel" is to begin with and the many forms it takes. I also recommend watching some interviews with him on drumming (the Drum Talk one is great). You'll gain respect. Which is what he deserves for his INCREDIBLE amount of hard work and efforts to educate others.
