- Black Panther is now showing on the Steinberg Screen at the BAM Harvey Theater. To mark the opening, OkayAfrica's CEO, Abiola Oke, sat down with Black Panther director Ryan Coogler for a Q&A centered on the film's themes, cast, and cultural implications.
Marvel Studios’ Black Panther follows T’Challa as he returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his rightful place as king. When a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king-and Black Panther-is tested. Ryan Coogler (Creed, Fruitvale Station) directs.

Love all these films! Andrea Arnold's Red Road should also be seen.
I love Ryan such a real down to earth human being.
I caught chills when he started explaining his first time watching Malcom X with his dad
Man I'm such a big fan of this guy.
i have watched 2 of his movies in last 3 days and now i am a huge fan.
ESTYAK ISLAM fruitvale station is crazy good for something based of of only 5 mins of footage
I, along with millions of others knew he was something, at fruitvale station.
Him, Jordan..look at how they were given these roles, the opportunities could have just as easily not happened, it shows all the potential people have whom we've never even seen yet
I love how Oakland this man is!! Brilliant!!
Ryan Coogler is simply brilliant.💯👍
Crazy how many people in the comments have never heard an Oakland accent.
It's not bc most people in the world live outside of that specific city.
7 billion vs Oakland's population dude
I said what I said
A Prophet is one of his favorite movie ! Yet another reason for me to be drawn to his own movies.
Awesome that he mentioned Fish Tank. Its masterful. Un Prophete has always been a big influence on him and he's been very focal about that in the past. The very first seen in Creed in the juvenile detention centre, the boys are wearing the exact same prison outfit as the characters in Un Prophete.
This man touches my spirit.#LoveRyanCoogler
Love that he said, "Malcolm X" is one of his favorite films! I know that scene he's talking about too.
Transformation of Red to Malcom
I will definitely check out Fishtank on Ryan’s recommendation. I loved his vision of the women of Wakanda and how great a society where men and women were truly equal could be.
Boyz in the hood is a Oscar winning movie with no Oscar!
Facts
Such a great director. Christopher Nolan and Ryan Coogler are the people I look up to when wanting to become a director. So passionate on what they love to do which is making movies and motivate me so much.
I love you, Ryan! Here’s my top 5 favorite movies: Taxi Driver, Boogie Nights, Bully, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and Goodfellas.
his dad though omg LOL!!!!!!!!!
He has such a creative mind so handsome...I wish for a husband like him who's creative and handsome a beautiful soul.
Latoya Thomas u gotta a shot
C Rizzy Ive been researching him and looking at alot of his interviews and there is something about him that is very profound. I see that in his face. If your lacking or in need of someone to tell you how great your are as well......sorry but I'm not the one. Sometimes I wonder why people dwell on negativity and bad energy like you...you need a hug but I'm not the one to give it to yah....hold this L though...asshole
Latoya Thomas pray for it. Vision it, ask and you shall receive
C Rizzy I mean his movies are beautiful too, and those are a reflection of him because he makes them himself.
C Rizzy you can if that person is truthful and represents the real them when they speak. It's just sitting down and having a conversation which is how we all tend to learn more about one another's soul.
Our dads were twins apparently lmao. Mine had me watch videos of the actual Malcolm x speaking with him, sadly he died before he could show me the movie.
Love the Andrea Arnold shout out. That top five is as good as it gets.
Gabriele Simon was
Wish I had been there to see my favorite director in my hometown.
How’d I miss this?? I would have been there
Rashida Na same here!
Ask any film geek on any given day what his 5 favorite movies are and you'll get a different set of 5 movies each time.
3 movies so far and all great. He may not have favorite directors but he is becoming one of my favorites for sure. He's also a great inspiration for any young director, an amazing artist. Can't wait to see what he does next.
love this dude, sounds so real
Fish Tank!!! That's my movie! I've watched it like three times!
You know what I’m saying?
Thanks for having CC! I love being able to have stuff written out.
It’s crazy how Oakland he sounds Lol
“I’ll beat yo ass with this baby in my arm” LMFAOOOOO

Is this interview uploaded in one piece anywhere?
The Batman it might be... depends on who you are
🙅🏾♂️🇬🇭Wakanda Forever🇬🇭🙅🏾♂️
Um I thought one of his favorite movies was Rocky
Can you imagine how many favorite movies a filmmaker could have?
I don’t know if it’s because I played and loved football so much but Ricky getting killed in Boys N The Hood was the saddest thing ever to me when I saw it. Still sticks to me.
It's interesting to note that he has a stutter but he is a great director. I think no one could have done a better version of Black Panther and I can't wait for Wakanda Forever in November 2021.
Someone definitely could have atleast made it good
felicitation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fish Tank is the real curve ball here, if it's the one I'm thinking of
"I'll beat yo ass with this baby in my arm" lmao...aint nothing like a Black parent.
I can name my 5 favorite movies
Yes. I know...what you...are saying.
I admire his intellect
A Prophet is AWESOME. Rust & Bone too.
rest in peace
Great choices.. not enough people have seen Un Prophete.
How the heck I missed this??
He’s so fine🤤😍😍😍 all the good ones are taken 😢😢
Top 10 Influential films I loved - No order: The Last DragonTerminator 2Conan the Barbarian Tango & Cash Harlem NightsBig Trouble in little ChinaDuneRocky IVWeird ScienceLost Boys
Brilliant black american young man
Thought he was gonna say rocky. 🤔
Jason5499 5499 thats his dads favorite movie
Jason5499 5499 why?
Lashawn Johnson it was his inspiration for “Creed”.
I love listening to this man but Malcolm x the only powerful black man? What about MLK. They really need to do a movie about MLK so the younger generation can learn about him too
'Selma' by Ava DuVernay?
Mike Gouken thanks. I'll check it out.
Smokey B, some people prefer Malcom X's method for black rights to MLK's method. To him Malcom X may be greater. We won't all belive the same person to be the most impactful in our lives.
He's not ignorant of MLK, come on, he's well educated, he just prefers X. I believe in the movie 'Selma' it is shown that MLK tries to recruit Malcom but he tells him they don't do things the same way, it won't work, although they were after similar goals.
Why does he seem so nervous? :)
Marvel should let this man direct a "Blue Marvel" film
we were all inconsolable and crying
French films are amazing....
Cool interview but lol why does the interviewer look so depressed half the time.
You know this man may not be that well spoken but he is one hell of a director.
He's a wonderful writer as well. Very intelligent, creative, and authentic.
He has a stutter/speech impediment but he's a wonderful writer (wrote Black Panther script) and director
Probably more well spoken than you.
I think he is very well spoken, great guy, you can tell he has some street in him and I love it.
So you decided "Well-Spoken" is whatever your definition is only. #boybye
Does he have lisp?
Vegeta Solo ...nah that's his accent but it sounds like he stutters some.
Nah he has lisp. He just Oakland af too
un prophete. YES!
Ruth Carter got an Oscar nomination and win for both Malcolm X and Black Panther.
Angela Basset was also in Boys in the Hood as well. Nice to see him working with people he admires
He’s my cousin
Mmm
👏🏾🤍✨
Deep accent
I like Andrea Arnold a lot, but Fish Tank is one of her most overrated movies. The girl is excellent, as are damn near all the non-actors, but Fassbender clearly reverted to acting "techniques" and it was so artificial. The entire arc of where everything was going was so predictable. As pretentious as American Honey might be, it's artistically much better, as is her triumph Wuthering Heights.
This dude can make good movies, but listening to him talk is painful.
your moms is painful
be quiet
Sshhhhh 🙊🙊🙊🙊
The Black Pander
He has diction problems
He should probably see a speech therapist.
andrew miller he has a really bad stutter. That or he just has public speaking issues.
your mom's should see a speech therapist.
andrew miller he should still see a therapist to improve.
I appreciate his confidence which will give others that stutter confidence as well. Inspiring
I’m not criticizing Coogler at all - so please don’t think I am when I ask this, but does Coogler have a speech impediment?
Sobison lol no he’s from Oakland, that’s how most of them talk
I think he has a stutter
I love this dude so much
He does not speak well
For anybody who wants to see a film that is about the real life of people of colour, I would recommend Girlhood,
a french film and infinitely better than most of the stuff the english speaking cinema produces.
Black Panther was average not anywhere near as good as Spike Lee's best tho...
DAMN is he annoying to listen to
Tomy foh bitch
Tomy wow dude. That's a little bit disrespectful
then don't
He kinda sounds like moneybag yoo but a lot better obviously
He has a weird accent.
