@ he isn’t playing safety because his huge weaknesses at safety were coverage in man and zone. He can’t play zone because his back pedal and side shuffle are slow. He can’t play man because he lacks the smoothness to flip his hips. If he can’t do this at safety, what makes you think he can do this at corner? His outstanding traits make him suitable for special teams and a 3rd down RB. He was a good safety with Utah running downhill to cover things in front of him, but was terrible when players got behind him; that’s why they played him further back at safety and not corner. I’m not saying Vildor is the best we got at corner, but Vaki just isn’t the answer.
I think he is good when it’s an obvious passing down. So he’s great late in the game when time is ticking away and we have a lead. But he’s a pure pass rusher type. Thats just his thing and he can be challenged and he can be stopped. I don’t think they should have cut him. Who replaces him? He’s on the team, he knows the defense, what’s the point of cutting him on a short week? It has to be something more than just a football decision.
Why would any sane Lions fan suggest Jameson Williams returning punts. In one take you suggest St.brown not returning punts and then suggest Jameson should because of speed is ridiculous. We need these 2 wide receivers strictly on offense.
I believe this release shows that the lions continue to care about their players. Houston couldn't fit what the lions want but they knew he has talent and can have success elsewhere so they release him now to give him a chance to end up in a better situation. On the edge the lions want 6'4' plus 250 plus who can crush in the pocket while keeping contain. Or you need to be a SAM linebacker like Barnes and hopefully nowaski who can blitz, fill gaps in the run and drop into coverage. Houston is more like Hassan Reddick or von Miller where you're a pure pass rusher. Im hoping he goes to the Steelers or chargers. Tampa would be great also. Tomlin, bowles and minter would absolutely develop Houston and find a role. And he absolutely can have a huge role in the NFL, just not in Detroit on this defense. You can't have your edge guy blow past the QB and miss leaving 30 yards of green grass because of the over run whiff
Amazing how you say " they gave him 3 yrs"!!! 7 games in 2022: 8 sacks. 2023 against KC only Lion to reach feet of Mighty Mahomes for almost a sack. Broke his fibula on special teams! After that, very limited snaps and still got important sack and QB pressures! Even Dan sang his praises after the Texans game!! One dimensional for sure, but in the depleted Edge Rusher line up, he should have gotten many more snaps!! I think this firing has something to do with personal stuff, rather than production! He would be excellent on a team that wants an excellent, unique edge rusher, rather than 3 down DL, like Lions.
All facts. The coaches never like him, he may have asked to be released. He should have been getting 25 snaps a game. The Lions only have Smith and Pascal and PS players as pass-rushers. They now have no speed on the edge.
GTFOOH. He was ineffective as a pass rusher & had no other significant skill set. He can't set the edge and can't cover in space. One good game doesn't make up for all of that. Guaranteed he clears waivers.
@@MrTriptazadj Yeah....he is a little undersized. I think he may pick up with another team, but I doubt that the Lions will ever regret letting him go.
The Lions have next to nobody left as pass-rushers, and no speed at that position. I believe Houston asked to be released. I pray Houston goes to a team with a coach that will elevate his skills ,and dominate .
What skills? Do you mean the speed rush he has and can be game planned against? He will probably get a shot, but they will see what the Lions have seen and be waived. He is not a good player for a 53 man roster.
@@martinbeaubien440 If we both are pass -rushers , you get 40 snaps and I get 10 who should have the most production.? Josh Pascal has played 351 snap so far Houston has played only 116 not much difference in stats and, who is more productive?
Houston was good at what he did, this is where the tough guy stuff falls short. Like we can afford to lose an edge because he resisted special teams. This is when it costs you - yet a punk like Vildor get shoved down our throat pos turnstile at corner, because he loves special teams
If u think 4th down attempts cost them the game, that is a pretty narrow view of it. Its what got them there. There were many factors that cost them the game with dropped passes also being a contributor. Also, we know have a kicker Campbell has confidence in. He was in a bad situation where either u give the other team field position because of a missed field goal or you go for it like u have all year. You never fault a coach for having confidence in their team. You also have confidence in the best coach the Lions have had in our lifetime.
The LIons are now truly a *Model NFL Franchise* -- never thought I'd see the day, but I love it!
Division games are always tough no matter teams record.
Don't underestimate the bears
You would think by some of comments here Dan Campbell was Darryl Rogers incarnate and James Houston was reborn Lawrence Taylor.
Darryl Rogers -- why are you bringing up scars from my youth?! He was awful!
Falcons probably should pick up Houston and give him a try down there….
Try out Vaki as DB. He was a stud there at Utah.
Hell! -have him catching punts too.

I really would like to pick up Daniel Jones as a solid backup insurance. The Lions could very much use that.
If David Montgomery is out there this week and wants to make a statement to his former team, the Bears are in trouble. Unleash Sonic & Knuckles!

The only thing left for the famed Kicker List is to bring forth a humorous flushing sound, ala Archie Bunker...

I don’t think they value speed very highly at the edge position

It just seems like Houston is still not 100%. I was hoping they could have traded him to Cleveland. It seems like he’d fit that wide 9 scheme

Sure. Send him one.
