I remember there used to be so many too. Sad to see them moving away or dwindeling 🙁. I heard when environments & ecosystems change, butterflies are the first thing to leave. Not sure how true that is...but I noticed they started slowly disappearing in my area way before they reported bees disappearing 🤧. People used to have flowers on their porch and stuff out for them, but people dont really have flower beds or gardens like they used to either. I tried planting some but I only saw a few pass by every now and then. Tons of wasps and yellow jackets though 😒 lol.
When I was a kid, I went to Glacier National Park, and I found a butterfly on the ground missing a wing. I knew he was going to die eventually, so I let him crawl on my hand, and I hiked around the park with him so that he could see it one more time.
Look at the dude's property. He's likely working a full time job to afford all of that. Doing that plus his butterfly hobby AND making videos is quite hard
Just found your channel and loved seeing such a rare form of the Tiger Swallowtail. Your butterfly is a partial kaleidoscope gynandromorph because some of the female color is on the male side and some of the male color is on the female side on the rear wings. I had one bilateral gynandromorph and one kaleidoscope gynandromorph during the time I reared Buckeyes for three summers. I asked Jesus if he would give me some gynandos. and that is what I got. I was experimenting rearing for different colors and patterns. The genetics of the Buckeye Butterfly is really prone to changing and being manipulated just by breeding specific individuals together. It was a lot of fun.
It should be added that males of the species are ALWAYS yellow. A yellow female/male combination would be impressive enough, but a dark female/male combination is even more dramatic! I was happy to find a female that had a "mosaic" of light and dark coloration; these are uncommon (I've seen two in my lifetime) but not at all as rare as what is shown in this video. My main area of study is wasps, and I've seen less than a handful of male/female gynandromorphs out of untold thousands, but I have a Xylocopa (carpenter bee) gynandromorph of a species in which the male is golden in color while the female is black, which gives it a strange look, too.
Thank you! I am one of Steve Irwin's biggest fans, so that is a real complement for me:-) Thanks for the suggestion as well! There are several carnivorous caterpillars native to Hawaii and I am hoping to visit that area sometime in 2020.
It's both and probably sterile, some animals can be hermaphroditic though. Meaning they possess both traits or they can move between one sex and another. Most snails are both at the same time and breed like that, while clownfish are born undifferentiated, the second largest fish in the group becomes male, and the largest becomes female. If the female clownfish dies then the male becomes the female and the largest undifferentiated fish becomes the new male Then in humans and some other mammals there are intersex individuals, which is when someone is born with a mix of male and female traits. A lot of intersex babies are operated on so that they appear male or female, and there is a movement within the intersex community to try and stop this from happening since it can be very emotionally (and physically) damaging to the individual and a lot of intersex people think surgery should be put off until the person is old enough to decide for themselves what they want.
hello john! heard about you from david orin humphlett - he said he recently met you and recommended your youtube channel. it is wonderful! amazing the hand of the Lord in the designated process you describe here in this video! i am about to go to costa rica for a couple weeks and will get to see many butterflies, Lord willing. will look forward to learning more from your channel! thank you!
Great channel and information. Can you suggest, or do a video on how to put up a dropped butterfly cocoon? I have about 60 swallow tail caterpillars, most of which have cocooned, but some have fallen off their branch after I moved the plant they were on. Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.
It is literally a male/female split right down the middle. Overall I would say the behavioral traits were closer to a female Tiger Swallowtail, but it's hard to tell too much from one specimen.
OH MY! ITS A COMVINATION OF THE BLACK SWALLOWTAIL BUTTERFLY AND THE ZEBRA SWALLOWTAIL! SO AMAZING! Also,I’ve caught black swallowtails and zebra swallowtails before :)
People in comments asking if this is hermaphrodism; he said this process during mitosis isnt seen in mammals. Mammal intersexual traits revolve around other phases of development
Good question! It would not show in the caterpillar stage of development because there is no obvious gender difference in the Tiger Swallowtail caterpillar.
Its not the same thing but Did you hear about that lion who looks like a male but is really female it's got to mean like a male lion but is a female and helps it pride by keeping out other male Lions because supposedly the male lions can't tell look it up lol pretty fascinating
The world needs more Butterflies.
No it needs more moths

That’s an understatement, it needs so many to make up for the losses in biodiversity for pollinators.
I found a bilateral gynandromorph of a Papilio rumanzovia once. My favorite butterfly I’ve ever held.
They are amazing!

That’s actually the most touching thing I’ve ever read on UA-cam. Thank you for that.
That's awesome. Extremely moving and very powerful. Reading your comment brought me to tears. Thanks for sharing. You will be blessed.
Why did he stop publishing? This videos are amazing and I just discovered the Channel thanks to the Green Brothers.

Thank you! And you are correct, this is not quite a full bilateral gynandromorph, but close. Do you still have any of your gynandromorph Buckeyes?
I luv learning about insects 😊Thanks so much. It was a wonderful video.
The youtuber vlogbrothers , sent me. Well lets start from the Beginning...WOW...Amazing...WAY Cool.......etc...etc.

So is the butterfly male or female, or maybe both male and female or neither? I’m assuming it can’t breed and carry on this trait?
Merelf funny, I was wondering the same exact thing.

Probably not gynandemophs tend to look like both genders while being one or the other

Hi John. Do you still do butterfly farming?

That's a great question! There are several ways. I will try to get a video out on this!
And btw, Swallowtails will hatch fine just in the bottom of a screen cage.
@@thebutterflyfarmer1509 Thank you for the reply!
I see someone already asked but you didn't answer: is this a female or a male butterfly when it comes to physical and behavioural traits?

Very specialized butterflies
People in comments asking if this is hermaphrodism; he said this process during mitosis isnt seen in mammals. Mammal intersexual traits revolve around other phases of development
Are the caterpillars of them different as well? Or does it only manifest in the butterflies?
Good question! It would not show in the caterpillar stage of development because there is no obvious gender difference in the Tiger Swallowtail caterpillar.
Imagine if someone took it outside for a second and hawk came down and just ate it
I would have cried lol.

Alright my question is what is the "gender" of that butterfly and can it be self reproduce like clams or Oyster?!
It is literally half male and half female, but can not reproduce.
