An irrigation project in Chiansi, outside Lusaka, Zambia, in Africa. Funded by InfraCo Africa (part of the Private Infrastructure Development Group), FMO, EAIF, and the Lundin Foundation, and developed by eleQtra.
Life has been tough for smallholder farmers, who are only able to farm six months of the year in Zambia due to lack of water. Now, thanks to InfraCo Africa, irrigation and advanced farming techniques enables Chanyanya to farm year-round. The commercial side of the project grows wheat and soya beans, while smallholders use irrigated market gardens to grow a variety of vegetable and fruit crops.
One day this model will be replicated across Africa, improving food security, water access and people's lives.

Brilliant doccie. We do have problems in Zambia when it comes to irrigate our crops during the dry months. This is a very much welcome innovation. i wish the doccie had also shown us how the water is tapped from the Kafue river upto the smallholder scheme. By the way the name of the area is Chanyanya and not Chiansi.

I'd rather teach the farmers to make and maintaing rope pumps.
that's an appropriate technology that such small scale farmers completely understand, finance, control and can rely on. this makes is a very reliable technology and a true asset.

8 years later, how did it work out? Did the 25% of the share profits ever make to the farmers?

If you...all of you were bit more clever, you should listen and watch to Muammar Gaddafi, he was creating THE GREAT MAN MADE RIVER..... this thing had serve for all of libyan people....but there was an other plan too.......to spread it for all of african people....almost all of this was destroyed by bombing of NATO Army (especially by USA, FRANCE and GREAT BRITAIN) --- during the ovethrow of Muammar Gaddafi....because he was a big obstacle for greedy bloody capitalism....there is need to read about plans of Moammar, he was a good person, who served he´s own people.....but the Western media presents it differently, this is very real case for explaining - how whole capitalism works

I love the idea very much but we really need to consider what are we growing, Soy, Wheat, GMO, and hybrid foods are Not good for Human consumption, if we decided already to grow food why can't we just grow good food for healthy, sustainable and environmentally friendly

Inspiring, yes, but practical? Increasing dependence on rivers with less and less rainfall is not responsible. Better yet to reclaim the land to lush green growth by capturing rains during the rainy season into the land, creating swales, planting indigenous trees to fix nitrogen in the soil and bring fertility back to the land. Dependency on fertilizers and hybrid/genetically modified seeds is exactly that. Proper land management can produce crop abundance without costly infrastructure, costly farm machinery and produce far more nutritious food.

    EXPANDING UNIVERSE.MENTIONED
IN HOLY QUR'AN 1500 YEARS AGO
    ALMIGHTY ALLAH THE MASTER CREATOR
Who can claim 1350 years ago that the universe is expanding?
والسماء بنينها بايد و انا لموسعون o
" And the heaven We built it with power, and indeed, We are the expander "
(And We it is Who make the vast extent, thereof )
    (Qur'an, 51:47)
Until 1931, physicist Albert Einstein believed that the universe was static. An urban legend attributes this change of perspective to when American astronomer Edwin Hubble showed Einstein his observations of redshift in the light emitted by far away nebulae - today known as galaxies.
After Hubble discovered that the universe was expanding, Einstein called the cosmological constant his "greatest blunder."
At around the same time, larger telescopes were being built that were able to accurately measure the spectra, or the intensity of light as a function of wavelength, of faint objects.
It is clearly mentioned in Holy Qur'an :
" And the heaven We constructed with power, and indeed, We are the expander "
    (Qur'an, 51:47)
Almighty Allah is the Master Creator of the whole universe. He says:
Should He not know what He created? And He is the Subtile, the Aware.
The knowledge of scientists is very limited and poor to understand the universe!!
But theirs constant efforts to understand the universe is highly admirable and they are praiseworthy indeed.
