  • Station visit number 7 in the series - getting round the least used station in each county of the UK, and at Little Kimble if you go at the right time you get to ride a very old heritage train. Thanks to Steve for joining me!
The Office of Rail and Road statistics (Which give you the passenger usage numbers) are here: dataportal.orr...
Diamond Geezer has also blogged about it here: diamondgeezer.b...

@@buksi6342 Good luck! Although this might become difficult in the northern maakunnat: "So, this is Misi, the least used station in Lapland... where we will have to wait for eleven hours until the one train per day comes back from Kemijärvi. And there is... absolutely nothing here."

Yes, a points system Geoff. The checklist of station amenities should score weighted points depending on their necessity and then combine into the "Station Index" that can ranked overall. Easy peasy. You'll have to start your 'all the stations' over again.

There are two class 121 bubble cars in service. The one on the video was brought back into service in 2011.
Both 121s are fitted with AWS, TPWS, OTDRs, GSM-R and an electomagnetic secondary door locking system.
The 121s operate services during the weekday peaks. They will be withdrawn from service ahead of the May 2017 timetable change. (Interestingly, were they to stay in service, it is likely they would have been fitted with wi-fi.)

It isn’t just this line they run them on, plus I don’t know if there’s only two of those units running. The reason why I say this is because there’s a class 121 on the Swanage Railway in Dorset which is formed of three coaches and if there are any issues with a steam train, instead of using one of their class 33 units, they can just use this instead. I’ve been on it before and it’s nice apart from the door to the driver signal which is really loud.

If you go to Bekonscot Model Village there is a huge model railway you will like.
Also the most reliable train service in the UK is run on the Isle of Wight and it uses an old 1930's tube trains. it's easily assessable at Ryde using the Hovercraft from Southsea (Next to Portsmouth) or you can use the Fastcat. It also has a station that is out to sea again for the Fastcat.

If you get the train to Aylesbury from Marylebone via High Wycombe, it does pass through here. I've been on it a couple of times, and I don't remember getting anyone getting on or off. This is probably because the bus from High Wycombe runs alongside it, and they're every 20 mins! Really enjoyed this vid!

I noticed "Minehead" as the blind destination on that 121 Bubble Car (which hasn't been on the National Network since the 60's!!), there was often another one displaying "Porthmadog" (on the Cambrian Coast Line)! They certainly liked to have fun with their Heritage stock, now sadly no more on this line.

One little thing that irked me was that although Monks Risborough was the 2nd least used in 2014-15, it was undertaken by Denham Golf Club in 2015-16 (MRS had 24,264 in 2015-16 compared with 21,072 at DGC)

I did get to travel on 121 034 yesterday and did 2 round trips! The on-board staff were amazing, and a friend of mine parked at Little Kimble, to catch the 121. The staff told us that the poor person who lives in the house has had people knocking on their door asking about trains!

Interesting that you come across a heritage unit used in commuter service. Here in Chicago, we have plenty of Budd-built bilevel cars dating back to the 1950s still in service on the Metra Burlington line, where they were first put into service. Nice thing about stainless-steel, if you take care of it, it lasts pretty much forever.

I was just thinking and the Highlands of Scotland has many little used stations and since your coming a long way could you maybe do a couple Scotland videos while your here? In terms of counties well Scotland has different council areas and regions but due to a lower population the two dividers really are the Highlands and the Lowlands.

Those 'heritage' trains! To me, they are the nasty diesel units which took over from steam - and more specifically for me, the Marlow Donkey. I am pleased to see the safety locking features because towards the end of those DMUs' lives I was travelling on a train to Reading at speed when the door at the seat where I was sitting flew open with a mighty crash. It was most disconcerting, but no one batted an eyelid. When the train arrived in Twyford I merely slammed it shut again. This was not an isolated incident either; it happened fairly often. On the news today (8/2/17) I also hear that passengers panicked on a train at Dalston when the carriage filled with smoke and there were some injuries in the rush to leave. A carriage on one of those old DMUs also filled with smoke on a trip from Maidenhead to Paddington back in the 80s - I merely pulled the communication cord, people opened the windows to let in some fresh air and the guard walked along the track, kicked something on the motor beneath the carriage and we continued on our way. Some left the carriage for another, but there was no panic, merely English sang froid!

I wonder how you're going to manage "one train a day" stations? On that note, looking forward to your "Least used station in Cambridgeshire" video!!! :P

I've investigated Slippea Hill - it really is outstanding on every level & in any category you might want to devise.

Geoff Marshall I think I'm more concerned about the one way nature of these journeys, especially if these stations are out in the middle of nowhere - getting home afterwards will likely be quite an expensive faff!!
Awesome series of videos, btw. If you would like a souvenir Permit to Travel from the machine at Beaulieu Road, give me a shout as I'm reasonably close by! I can always post it into your Londonist address.

Hello, could you do a video on Ilkeston train station which reopens in April?, Ilkeston I believe hasn't had a train station in around 50 years, Ilkeston was gave the title of the largest town in England that hasn't got a train station

I'm actually one of the small bunch of people that uses this station every day. There are slightly more interesting things to do nearby than you discovered. Mind if I link to this from my blog?

It's not a classified open station and also Coombe Junction Halt is the least used station in UK now due to All The Stations thrashing it's numbers to a new record.

7:22 +Geofftech I can kinda Answer that: Ashchurch For Tewkesbury station. It only has 2 platforms, 2 shelters & 1 timetable & 2 useless Helppoint with departure boards (which never work)

    • @TrainNutter
      @TrainNutter 8 років тому

11:43 Pilning is in South Gloucestershire (Different county). The least used station in Gloucestershire is Ashchurch For Tewkesbury (91,000). (All other stations in Gloucestershire have 100,000 passengers per year +)

TrainNutter MC Yep. Gloucestershire (the traditional county) and South Gloucestershire (formally the Northavon district of Avon, more or less) are two separate authorities :)
