Break is when an enemy's toughness is depleted (the white bar above their health). Each element has its own effect when breaking but they all include damage and delaying the enemy's next turn.

holy, that fight with Hoolay was tight, I thought for sure someone was gonna die to dots after his last attack
There were more than a few attempts where someone died
