In this vlog, we visit Loch Ness as well as the Culloden Battlefield. We are of course staying in Inverness, Scotland which is located near all of these spots! I think you'll find it's the correct way to drive. We have driving on the left-hand side of the road since mediaeval times. Driving on the right is a Napoleon thing that's why the rest of Europe drives on the right to and America copied the French.....PS We Brits be Damned before we did anything Napoleon told us to do.
what a total load of bollox....the reason for driving on the right side of the road is because 90 % of the world are right handed....meaning, it is far safer and easier....this is probably why the English are so bad at wars.

Yeah, the roundabouts were a bit tricky. I live in an area with a couple of roundabouts, so I’m used to them, but going through them in an opposite manner was tough! Haha and I wish we spent more time exploring by car. Next time for sure!

When people travelled only on horses,you passed each other on the left to keep your sword arm free so why change something after 1000 years.

Also when mounting a horse, you mount from the left standing off the road (or mounting using a set of stone steps that still exist in a few places). The alternative is to mount standing in the middle of the road which can be dangerous. Why would you do that?

Oh man, this is one of the things we fear the most. I've (Nabol) driven in Italy and other parts of Europe but never on the other side of the road. Yes, it's almost always a manual. Kudos to you guys. Lock Ness is on my list for sure. I would also go straight to the battlefield. We skip most museums. Haha

Did the Rocky Mountain Train trip (as you do lol) went from Vancouver to Banff! Then boarded a Carnival Cruise and headed up the Inside Passage through to Alaska (Stunning). Alaska blew me away.
Now we have been living in New Zealand for a little while now, and it’s just amazing here!

Another thing that Americans who have driven in the UK have often remarked about is that they felt that the roads were very narrow compared to the US.
Oh yes! I definitely does rain a lot in the UK - I most whole heartedly concur!
That is why we are so green. Ireland and Wales have the most rain I think.

Good video. Just for clarification, the Jacobites weren't just fighting against "the English;" they were fighting against the Hanoverians, and a substantial number of the Hanoverian troops at Culloden were Scottish, though most were English.
James Anderson Nope, most were lowland Scots. Fact is, the Jacobites were a minority in Scotland which by that time was mostly Presbyterian and had no truck with the Catholic Stuarts. England definitely didn’t want them.

The Jacobite risings were principally about ending the Union and restoring the Stuart dynasty along with the Scottish parliament. You don't talk about the government or Hanoverian army when talking about the American revolution or any continental war, yet for some reason the idea that the Jacobite risings were a British civil war is still seen by many members of the public as the educated stance to take, despite modern historiography, especially in ENGLAND, acknowledging the rising were national ones. In 1715 the Jacobites raised roughly 22,000 men throughout the rising and in 1745 it was roughly 15,000. For the record the largest Scottish army to be raised prior to that point was roughly 30,000 men under James IV. 22,000 in 1715 was from a fencible, that is to say a military manpower of about 30,000 so these were not small risings and support was immense for the Jacobite cause, both directly and there were many who held Jacobite sympathies. This up swell of support for the cause came from opposition to the act of Union, the rising in 1689 was not particularly large, but after 1707 it was a different story.
And for the record by the time of the risings the population of Scotland was at most 2-4% Catholic and had been that way since the 17th century. The most ardent Jacobites were Episcopalians, but there were many Presbyterians as well, particularly in 1715, who feared the Scottish church would lose it's independence under a continued union.

I would just like to mention that for thousands of years the left side of a road or track was the way to go, it is only in the last couple of hundred years (if that) that people like Napoleon decided to be different and as for America they at least had a good reason as the multi horse wagons there were driven safely on the right for visibility (apparently). But apart from that I like your videos, keep them up :-)

The car hire people can probably give you an automatic if you specifically request it. It might be more expensive but perhaps worth it from a safety, both physical and mental, point of view. You might also consider trying to find a pdf version of 'The Highway Code' online before you come. It covers the basic things in summary, like driving law, rules and regulations, signs and signals, how to deal with roundabouts, etc. Remember, there is no left turn (equivalent to right turn) against a red light, unless a lit green filter arrow specifically allows it.
I live in inverness (born and bred) and the way you pronounce some of the names makes me laugh XD You pronounced Urquhart castle so wrong i giggled lol Glad you had a good time! That lil village with the cafe is called Drumnadrochit. I wont go into how to say that haha. Culloden (the battlefield) is pronounced caw-law-den. :p

In my secondary school we used "Urquhart" to weed out any suspected Sassenachs. One of the girls had that family name and if you couldn't pronounce it you were suspected of having a severe case of Englishness.

The car hire company give you a stick shift as the default unless you specifically request an automatic. It may be a bit more expensive but it will help make driving less stressful.

Fly back? I'd have taken a train. Glasgow-London is about 4:30 hours (Virgin) and Edinburgh-London about 5:00 hours. Gives a nice view of landscapes, no boarding/departure hours and likely a chat with locals on the train.
I would have liked top have taken the train back, but I think it may have been cheaper to fly back with EasyJet. I can't remember for sure now. lol I just remember our EasyJet tickets from Inverness to London were around $30 USD

The first turn out of the parking lot was a right turn so I naturally thought I could just go but I turned into oncoming traffic. I also went the wrong way through a roundabout which caused a lot of horn beeping. I got better though! Aww memories!

There`s dozens of accidents in the Highlands each year with tourists pulling out, and driving on the wrong side of the road! including fatalities, so take care everyone.

I can't remember the exact dates now, but this was in late September- early October
Driving in the UK, if it is a residential area the speed limit is usually 30MPH, some areas with smaller roads are 20mph. A-roads are usually 50 but some are 40,60 or 70 depending on the size and amount of lanes, country roads are usually national speed limit with is 60mph but most people drive around 40mph on them because they aren't well maintained. Also it's pronounced Jac-O-Bite, as in Jack.
In my experience most people drive about 80mph on country roads.
Best to just look for street lights. Unless otherwise stated (every 20-30 seconds at the speed limit) if there are streetlights it's 30mph, if not it's 60mph on a single carriageway and 70mph if there is a central reservation
It's difficult trying to give so much variable information relating to speed limits. The National speed limit is 70 mph so that was incorrect. Why not say, "the speed limit is usually displayed on road side signs except in towns where the speed limit is 30 mph".
Terence Lewis The national speed limit varies depending on the vehicle you are driving! So many signs are simply a white circle with a black diagonal stripe through it rather than a number. This signifies the national speed limit applies. It is up to the driver to know what the limit is for his vehicle and the type of road. For a car it would be 60mph on a single carriage way, 70mph on a dual carriageway or motorway. Lower for vehicles with trailers, caravans, large trucks etc.

30-40% of the worlds countries drive on the left. As brits driving in America or Europe etc - we experience the same thing to you. I find it takes about a day - then it feels natural.

Add a sticker with an arrow pointing to the left to remind you which side of the road you need to be on.
Used to stick shift, you'll bang your arm in the door frequently. Roundabouts - chips! and they are everywhere: learn where to look for on-coming traffic if you are a swift driver. Single lane roads with evasion stops to pass an on-coming car: learn NOT to instinctively go to the wrong side when there is no other traffic to show you what to do. On the motor way, do not keep lane, and the slow one and fast ones are reversed, and, don't hang in the middle one(s) when more than two lanes in your direction. And, the third day or second week, when you feel comfortable driving, driving away from your countryside B&B, still remember you have to get to the other side of the road. Walk to the other side for the driver's chair. The more experienced you were on your side, the more difficult the other side may be.

Used to driving on the right side and all these concepts foreign to me, I had to make something up when Google translate suggested one translation in a different universe. Passing places. So many memories. I remember when I remarked to my wife, the rental car's steering was rather vague at only 120. Her response: "those are miles, not kilometres, per hour." The fun.

There is certainly a monster in Loch Ness, lots of tourist jobs depend on it!
If you're interested in William Wallace then the Wallace Monument, a tower standing on Abbey Craig, which overlooks the site of the battle of Stirling Bridge, is probably the main thing to see. It has an exhibition which tells the real story of Wallace (unlike the movie Braveheart, which is notoriously unhistorical). The Wallace Monument also houses the sword which reputedly belonged to Wallace.
I live about two miles from a monument, just north of the city of Glasgow, which marks the site of the house where Wallace was betrayed to and captured by the English. Unlike in the movie, he did have a companion with him who was killed while trying to defend him.

Little chaotic at first. haha But I got the hang of them as the day progressed. There are a lot of them though! Typically in the US, if you encounter one, that's the only one you'll come across in a normal day. lol

As a Brit driver I would add that whenever you’re driving in another country, it’s mad not to familiarise yourself with driving regulations, speed limits, signs, etc before getting behind the wheel.
I drive in various European countries ( and currently I’m in La Reunion… French overseas territory island in the Indian Ocean), and have absolutely no problem driving a left hand drive vehicle on the right side of the road.
In England, my own car is Automatic, but I use manual ( or “stick shift”) as you call it.
Cars are wonderful things but can be killing machines at the hands of incompetent drivers!
lol no offence but you need to learn how to say jacobite mate, also the jacobite army were fighting the British not just the English and they were fighting to restore the Stewarts to the throne of Britain. Half the British army was actually made up of scots who didn't support the Stewarts and were enemies with the clans fighting for the jacobite. After the jacobite defeat the British started the Highland clearances which brought about the end of centuries of clan warfare and the Highland way of life, they even banned us from wearing the kilt and banned the Scottish language gaelic, millions of Scots had there whole way of life destroyed and alot of them moved to America and Canada to start a new life and that's how places like nova Scotia came about
The 'a' in Jacobite is pronounced as in cat or bat or hat - not as in say or way or day.

Ha this is funny... but imagine us driving automatic cars on the wrong side of the road in the USA.... My tip fly into Orange County and not Los Angeles and pick your car up the following day... the scenery is great in Scotland especially the last couple of hours on the train from London to Edinburgh.

I have driven in France and Germany and since I am from the UK it can be a little daunting at first. However, after a couple of days you adjust and it comes as second nature. Tip, always read up on laws and regulations for driving in a foreign country. Paris is very hectic and drivers are not patient at all especially to foreigners.
I've been to Paris and I will never be driving there haha!

Paris traffic is crazy. Went there for Disney land and must have seen several crashes. Went by Ferry and coach, so didn't have to worry about driving. The traffic at Arc De Triomphe was pure crazy, I don't even think the parisians have much more of a clue when it comes to that roundabout. It was chaos.

It's not just cars that are smaller in the UK, but houses, roads, retail store sizes etc.... Just about everything. But this is because space in the UK is at a much higher premium. The UK could literally fit inside of the state of Texas alone 3x over! And there are 11 U.S. states that are actually larger than the UK on their own individually. So this gives you a rough idea as to how much bigger the US is compared to the UK. (The US is actually 2.2x larger than all 28 member countries of the EU combined too.) The U.S. is so massive, that it's only 1.4% smaller than Canada in total area. And it actually has more physical land than Canada. The U.S. is also the world's largest in terms of Arable land. Aka...The U.S. is massive! So the US likes to do things big! Our homes are even on average the largest homes in the world in terms of sq ft. tied only basically with Australia.
Also Gas in the UK is very expensive for sure. The national average price in the UK for a liter of Gas is currently £1.18 at the moment. While Gas in the U.S. is currently $2.32 a gallon on average. So in other words, a gallon of Gas in the UK is currently $5.77 per gallon to be exact. Or another way to put it, the national average in the UK for a gallon of Gas is currently 2.49x more expensive than the U.S. national average.
And I also somehow doubt the UK will switch over to the right side of the road like the U.S. anytime soon and join the majority of the world. The UK actually did look into it. But it was quickly realised the immense cost of doing so was prohibitive. Road signage would have to be completely reworked and roads would have to be repainted in addition to the mass confusion it would cause on UK drivers. Then the cars themselves would have to be changed over too in the manufacturing process. And existing cars would become a bit awkward to drive, with the steering wheel suddenly being on the less than ideal side.
Scotland does look beautiful. I would love to visit Loch Ness. If I could visit the UK, I would probably hit up London for a couple of days, then I would get up early and drive from London up to Loch Ness in a day. It's only a 581 mile long trip. So I could easily do that trip without any rest needed at a hotel along the way. I would do it in 10 hours.
You can always take the train too! Def recommend visiting both places if you get a chance. I love Scotland!

Inverness, Glen Urquhart, Culloden and Jacobites all pronounced incorrectly but that's OK as it's very common to mispronounce them. Unforgivable is that literally no one would be able to see you in the Penta hotel waving as the windows are tinted!

Something I find weird is that, even in my hometown of less than 20,000 people, there’s a tower twice as old as America, one of the oldest tower houses in Scotland. To have history like that less than a 15 minute walk away is incredibly weird.

Lincoln Riddle Alloa Tower in Alloa (hence the name). It was the residence of one Sir Robert Erskine who was given the land of Alloa as a sort of reward for something, I can’t remember what.
Most people in the UK learn to drive manual ( stick) because if you learn to drive on an automatic license you're only allowed to drive manual vehicles and would need to obtain a manual licence :)
So there’s two different types of licenses? In the US, we can drive both on one license. I have owned two manual vehicles in the last 8 years, a Jeep Wrangler and an Audi S4.
Lincoln Riddle if you pass in a manual car, you can drive anything. If you pass in an auto, you are restricted to autos. Very, very few people learn or take tests in automatics, very few driving schools offer them and they tend to be taken by people who really struggle to learn a manual- after multiple expensive driving test failures they might try again in an auto.
When I've driven in N America I've never found an issue with keeping to the correct side.
The issues I did have:
+ looking at the mirror (it was on the wrong side for me)
+ following directions from friend doing the map reading. If he said turn right, I would turn to the offside which in the States is a left turn; and visa versa.
+ buying petrol (gas) was odd for me, in the States I had to pay first and so had to predict how much I wanted.
+ in the UK roads are numbered, whereas in the States it the route that is numbers and a road can have more than one route.
Nowadays, you can just pay at the pump, you don't need to guesstimate anymore.
A Hyundai i10 is a city car. You said that cars in the UK are small. Well, city cars are, by definition. There would have been plenty of bigger cars available but you seem to have chosen the smallest one possible!
