  • I’m building a recording studio in an old barn using reclaimed materials. I somehow found a tascam 388, portastudio 424, tascam m30, and a yamaha mt44 all locally for free or close to free. This is a little studio setup walkthrough tour.
    The concept of this studio is using just recycled gear, broken instruments, non working amps, reclaimed materials, left over equipment that people don’t want. Even that sweet carpet was given to me by a friend! I found furniture at the dump. I’ve built acoustic treatment out of old insulation and old wood.
    When covid happened, I moved back home, started to help clean up my parents property, cleaned up this barn, got wifi and started working out of it. Just cleaning it alone was a big project.

    I’m a guitarist - I play on people's songs, do film music, scores, teach guitar, drums, ukulele. Back when there were gigs, I did those. So this has been my workplace during covid.
    I realized the other day that I had all these projects going on at once, and it was pretty ridiculous! But that’s what I’ve been doing with my free time. Just messing around with old broken gear, trying to fix it, sometimes failing, sometimes succeeding. It’s been a fun learning experience.
    I think even if the gear is free or close to it, you can still have a bad case of G.A.S. “Gear Acquisition Syndrome”. Which might be the problem here haha.
    The barn already had a lot of stuff in it like speakers, amps, my old Tama Artstar from college, lots of cables, etc, that’s actually how the barn studio came about. There was enough stuff to put something together. So I’ve augmented it over the months by just bargain hunting - scouring craigslist. Someone even kindly donated a casio keyboard. Craigslist in this area is pretty amazing, epending on what your’e into.
    There were a few times where I saw some awesome pieces that were priced super cheap, but I didn’t buy them cause that’s no fun. I wanted to stay true to the philosophy of this home recording studio build, which is using either free or donated gear, and not pay anything more than a nominal amount. I found the tascam 388 locally for a fraction of what it should cost, and I just couldn’t help myself. It needs work though, and I’m in the process of fixing it.
    yes the barn is haunted.

    Dude that's hardcore. I bought my 388 for 800$. I'd never sell it ...ever! You can build your whole studio around it. I use my four tracks for tape loops and mellotron stuff.

      I hear ya that's about what I got mine for. You have a mellotron?!

      @@travisraab Nah just the 4 track loop trick. I had one but could never get it repaired. I sold it broken and bought a car ! Mad respect to your musical adventure. All my gear is barely working throw aways too. I love getting weird gear 3rd hand.

      Haha a car is more important! I'd like to do that loop thing i might try to build one of those tape synths. I figured out how to fix this 388 somehow but there's a couple pieces of gear that are still stumping me around here! I guess they were garbage for a reason

    like that approach .. reuse/repurpose👍. Love that 388/nice 7" tape 4mat/nice desk/don't sell it! Mine's a Tascam 246 multi-trk as the core of my very modest home-studio .. all cassette now as I've downsized. My "plug-ins" r ; Korg Pandora emulators (uno; the old Red, Green & Blue ones & a hi-qual Pandora Stomp I couldn't resist). Even sounds from apps on my iPad get fed into the 246. I got an Alesis SR16 as a modern classic dm machine. I use small collection of affordable mics incl a pair of rare Teac ME-120 electret pencil condensers. My pwr amp's an overhauled antique Kenwood Trio TK-150. I'm gonna hafta do wot u've done & actually bld mounts 4 the gear .. everything's teetering on everything else atm🤣.

      @@travisraab so cool! Have you thought about using it for vintage analogue tape loops? Like beatles style.

    • @travisraab
      @travisraab  3 роки тому

      No I've seen people do that on youtube and i was always like how is that done? Is it just a very short tape that is wound to keep turning or am I dumb? i could have 8 notes or chords and perform a song by using each channel?

    • @diyrecordingstudio
      @diyrecordingstudio 3 роки тому +1

      @@travisraab yeah a literal loop of tape, you can sticky tape the ends together, then you play it onto another tape machine. Tricky to sync and all that on these types of machines. Im sure theres a clever way to do it though.

      it was an offer i couldn't refuse 😂. i was actually nervous about it and wondered why no one else had grabbed it. i also had to open it up and fix it which i'll explain in a video. it's always a gamble, cause if it doesn't work, then it doesn't work and doesn't matter how good the deal was. guess i got lucky.

      😂 i would be like 😭😭😭 you might be right. i know these machines don't make music for you but they can certainly be inspiring! when i first got it gave me so much anxiety I wanted to just get rid of it right away I tried to sell it the very first day honestly. i'm actually a minimalist at heart that's why i was cleaning this whole place so i'm not trying to fill it back up with too much stuff!
