Oh my God I love how you can see how like excited Bill is to have John onscreen with him for stefon. And I love how Bill loses it when John goes "HELLO GENTLEMEN HOW ARE YOU?"
Yea... you can tell during rehearsals John said that line differently. Then when it came time to go Live, he switched it up. I mean his character's name is SHY.... and he just overly confident "Hello gentlemen. How are you" threw off Bill a little.
I think during rehearsals Shy was supposed to come in and say "hi" like Stefon but John always loves tripping Bill up so he changed it last minute and did it in a super serious formal voice. I love their friendship
I think Hader said that the reason it made him laugh was that he was expecting Shy to be like Stefon, and speak in a similar man, and instead he just comes out speaking like everyone's dad. "HELLO GENTLEMEN HOW ARE YA?"

I’ve haven’t even seen John and Bill in the same camera shot before, only great stories about their friendship in interviews. I missed this so much.
He's hosting tonight -- can't wait.
This is more advertising than Roman J. Israel, Esq. ever received during it's initial run in theaters.
Also: Mulaney!!!
I know I’m not the only one who thought Seth Meyers was gonna pop up at the end, right?
Yhea they missed out on killing it!
Hockey Patriot I did! That would have been perfect.
pop up from under the desk lmao
I literately was waiting for him!!!! What a missed opportunity lol
"Please, call me by your name." LOL. Damn, Bill Hader is hilarious!
“God. Thank you, Shy.” Kills me every time. Stefon is the best.
"If you're normal, and you love seizure-inducing Malaysian music-"
Lost it, just absolutely lost it at that one.
@Angel Curtain seizure-inducing Malaysian music isn't normal.
Bill Hader, PLEASE don’t take so long to come back again!!!!!! ♥️
Bill Hader is truly amazing. I love the Stefon bits. They just crack me up and I love watching him break character.
"If you're Irish or just white and violent" I lost it there oh my goshhhhhh
Last time it was Dan Cortez that made him crack now its Roman J Israel Esq... Whoever makes up the cards to get him to break is brilliant.
dannytheman1313 The guy who played Shy, the lawyer, is John Mullaney and he's the writer of all the Stefon bits.
Dude is brilliant
I love the fact that Mulaneys writing style is so obvious. They way he builds his jokes and continues them is so distinctive.
STEFON! So much love!!
I'm convinced this is a live action madlib.
Dusty Pope And You would not be wrong for thinking that at all, because John Mulaney designed for it to be a live, crazy, off-the-cuff 'Mad Lid' Reading by Bill Hader. John Mulaney-the real mastermind behind making the Jokes for the 'Stefon' Sketch-is notorious for throwing Bill off-course with His last-minute Lines that Bill is actually reading for the first time as He sees them on the Cue Cards that John has just changed-up on Him! Whenever You see Bill crack up, then You'll know that John was involved! He said this when He was on 'Late Night With Seth Myers'.
bakersupreme2010 That's cool. I love John Mulaney.
I love how weirdly dressed and described Shy is, but his voice and mannerisms are just John Mulaney.
Apparently in rehearsal he just said "Hi" in a quiet and effeminate voice, but when they did it live he went full Mulaney and that's why Hader cracked up.
_This place has everything..._
reverse polarity Cubans with a harelip and a really bad attitude riding on a donkey show aperitif for no particular reason
And Dan Cortese
I'm happy to know Seth and Stefon are still going strong ;D LOL ♥
"You can't say midget on TV."
"Well I sure would like to."
And he still didn't.
I was like: if Bill Hader hosts SNL, he HAS to do a Stefon appearance on Weekend Update! So glad he did! Was (and still is) hella funny! 😂🤣😂🤣🤣😂🤣
I can't ever get my fill of Bill
Stefon and Shy need to be a couples costume this Halloween!
You mean Stefon and Seth Meyers.
What a cool idea.
you can hear the transition from stefon to bill when he breaks hahaha i love this man
"I don't trust any dog whose stomach touches the ground"
I don't know why I laughed so hard at that part. His voice was just hilarious. And then his look afterward lol
Gail Flemming it was kinda cute and funny how he lowered his voice while saying it.
yeah!! :)
Weirdest joke of the night
He even found it wierd when he said it by the look on his face afterward. He gave it a thought.Too funny! Love him!
I'd kill to know what Mulaney whispered into his ear. It's starts with "My girlfriend..." but that's all I could catch
And John is married, so he just admitted on national TV that he is creating on his wife. Wow.
I got up to "My girlfriend looks at pictures". It makes the cameo even funnier when you realize Mulaney wrote it just so he could have one extra opportunity to make Bill fuck up.
The more I listen to it, the more I hear, "my girlfriend looks at pictures of my penis.."
Alex Kime
You....do know John was portraying a character named Shy, right? John is married; the character he is portraying is the one with a girlfriend. John's an actor, not an adulterer. Wow
ForNoOne1,,,, I really thought he said "...my brother..." but yeah I have no idea, whatever it was it seems that Bill was not expecting it, based on his reaction. P
