Herr Antrim ! I’m learning a lot of different languages !
So when I read Latin, it opened up the door for learning German !
Because it’s a language that people use today ,
DER SCHMETTERLING!!! - "the butterfly"
DIE SCHMETTERLINGE!!! - "the butterflies"
A true classic
You know it.
My German teacher in highschool said that war is a masculine noun "Der Krieg" while in French it's feminine "la guerre" and that's why Germany wins its wars and French don't. I was very offended as a French, but I got to admit that I will never forget that war is "Der Krieg" in German lol
Your tips are awesome! Another thing that I found EXTREMELY helpful is writing the word with the respective color: RED for feminine, BLUE for masculine and GREEN for neutral... It is funny how everytime I think of a word I learned, it appears on the right color and then I just know the gender... Plus, I find it better than using DER, DIE, DAS in front of the word, because the declensions mess it all up (especially when DIE becomes DER in Dativ and so on).
That is very interesting. I will definitely try it.
As a German professor, I agree with Herr Antrim's tips, the only minor quibble being that a student should not - in my humble opinion - try to say the word as fast as possible. In the long run, accuracy is more important that speed, esp. since speed can lead to fossilized errors that are hard to un-learn.
I think the best way if we say the words out loud and form sentences with them.
+Praneeth Media I googled it. I was underwhelmed. It looks like the website was built by a kid who just learned to code. Also, this is the second comment on this video with the exact same text. Looks like they have to resort to spamming in order to get customers. I'm sure it might be a great product, but with business practices like this, I can only assume it is worthless.
Now I can't forget a word after repeatedly saying it like a song. I wish I had thought about this earlier. My boring plan consisted of writing and then reading them everyday but this actually buries the words in your brain. Thanks, wish I stumbled on this earlier, subbed
Thanks so much for your support, you are totally right when said ‘’as you write as you read ‘’ this is absolutely the best technique to memorize new vocabularies...
Thanks once again.
Ich bin deutsche Sprache Schüler in B1 . And i used to follow this channel on daily basis.
Nice! I like your 'silliness' tips, especially the one of the table hitting on the fork. My Dutch mom could have used it - she always said das Gabel.
Hallo Herr Antrim, I want to thank you so much for your videos. I have been learning on my own for 11 months and I practice and learn every day using duolingo, German reader books, a grammar book, slow German podcast and flash cards. I do write the words down but I don’t repeat them, so now I will! Your videos have helped fill in gaps that I had not fully understood. It is like lightbulb moments all the time. So thank you again
Thank you for the kind words. It's comments like this that make the work I put into this channel seem worthwhile.
is it possible to learn it all alone?
duolingo is so boring...get on a course like Tandem with real people on zoom. Great fun and new friends
Thanks for sharing these tips.
Thank you, Herr Antrim!! Subscribed.
That is what I am doing now writing my vocabulary and verbs plus I write one word 10 or 20 times until I memorize it. Danke Herr.
More brilliant stuff from the hardest working man in the Deutsch lernen biz. Nonsense imagery simply works for memorization, and if I write something, I know it.
Thank you for these great tips!
I like to write the word in a few sentences.
Say I am learning "die Bewertung" (the rating). I'd write a few stuff like:
"Meine Bewertung ist da.""Das Lied hat eine hohe Bewertung."
Thank you very much for your video. I have been learning German for many years, I know the grammar, the different tenses etc... but I can't really have a conversation with someone or understand or write something more complicated or even basic things because I can't remember the vocabular... It is very frustrating because I know how to write complicated sentences and how to use the prepositions etc but actually I can't because I can't remember the words in between (the vocabular...)
Ihre Meinung ist super, Herr Antrim
I personally find Anrtim's method of presenting straightforward and I like the fact that he explains why the structure of the language is the way it is.
He doesn't try to hide things that he thinks might be too overwhelming. Instead, he isolates these things from the main learning lesson, but presents both fully.
I used to get frustrated at first reading even simple German because of idioms, and mystifying sentence constructions.
If I had been told to watch out for (but not necessarily learn) cases, conjunctions prepositions and subordinate clause structures early on, then I'd have made more progress and learned faster with less frustration.
i think your video is one of the bestes tipps because you had explained that apps are not all ways the best method to learn vocabluary, i think it is a commercial thing ,these apps. Danke.
Herr Antrim, this has to be one of your best videos yet! It was pleasing to read in the desc that you learned German, like we're doing...so you understand what difficulties we are experiencing...
The ideas put forward about learning new words is direct and instructive!! I am a fan of Anki because I can add images and audio to my cards and the fact that is uses SRS. But writing down the words may be a quick method.
I ask myself sometimes, have I learned any new words today. (Rather than just rehearsing old words). So, instead of learning no words, I could easily follow your suggestion and learn 5. That's a huge increase. :-)
As to music, music with words is definitely going to fight against the learning process. A gentle classical tune in the background however can be supportive. This shouldn't be confused with learning German from German songs (independent of the vocabulary activity).
Thanks for all your work!
+pegasusdba Finally a comment from someone who understands what I was saying about music.
I was going to ask if the music thing applied to music with German lyrics honestly for me the music helps more during times im not actively studying its more of a review of sorts or practice finding words youve learned and eventually you understand the whole song and its meaning if that makes sense
I was talking about actively trying to learn new vocabulary. If you are reviewing, sometimes music can help you recall the information better when it comes time for a test, but often times it is a distraction and it keeps people from remembering what they are supposed to remember. They remember what song they were listening to when they were studying the word, but can't remember what the word is. It is a strange phenomenon that I have noticed with myself. I remember having conversations with people, but don't remember who it was even though I can remember what was on the radio at the time.
oh ok im sorry that took so long for me to grasp but i absolutely understand what you mean now and it is very true ive only been learning German for a few weeks now and just found your channel thank you for putting this information out its helped a lot so far my biggest hurdle seems to be i still cant fathom sentence structure and it seems to be that you have to kind of memorize the articles for each word or there gender to know when to use die,der or das but something tells me if i explore your channel i will find the answers im looking for thanks again!
Thanks for the tips!
Thank you for saying listening to music doesn't help in learning. I could never do it and failed to understand why some would do it.
I extremly love your videos, Thank you for sharing it. :D
You are welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I have a slightly newer video about this topic, but it is completely in German. You can find that here: ua-cam.com/video/lodkvi3YGx4/v-deo.html

I belong to the Old School Of Thoughts. So I too share your views that writing down the new words, reading them aloud and associating them with other interesting facts, literally etch those words in one's memory for ever. Very well explained for everyone to understand and feel motivated to follow these practical and very useful suggestions.
Glad I could help.
Super smart, especially the singing method.
I really like the singing method, too. I still use it in class all of the time. My students think it is annoying, but they have to admit that it works, because they remember my bad singing.
this helps so much!! thank you!!
you have just cracked open my brain with knowledge!!! these are superior method i wish i would have watched this video eons ago! lol
You are welcome. :)
This was really helpful ❤️
I totally agree with You!
Wow Mr gentle man thanks for your good idea 👍

Danke.
Thank you.. tried few tips already i did write many words.. plus repeated.. but forget.. i will try again sentence form.. but making sentences needs prepositions too..
Thanks for teaching singling German
Fantastic video. Thank you! LIKE
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Have fun learning German.
Yeah you are wright it is the best method thank you man!!
Good idea vielen dank
Thanks. Glad I could help.
I will try it ,,danke schon😊
The best way I learned German is hear someone use, say, a German verb selected, in a sentence, even if the verb is in a different tense, and "Deutsch Direkt" (a BBC German-language telecourse released in 1982-1983), was my favorite program for this. This gave me some pretty quick recall on nearly any German verb I had to master, even some of the difficult ones.
Zum Beispiel (or "for example"):
"Machen. Er hat alle mit der Hand gemacht."
(To make. He has made it all by hand.)
Ein andere Beispiel (or "another example"):
"Abholen. Herr Kager hat das Brot abgeholt."
(To pick up. Mr. Kager has picked up the bread.)
Thx for this friend it's very useful !😊😊😊👍👍👍👍
Thanks for all the tips....it really works when we write n speak that word it helps to memorize...
This guy is great!
Thanks a lot 😊😊😊
I think what you say is true, but it is but one side of the coin, for learning a language, you have to learn and to memorize the vocabulary of a language, but the best way to do that is to connect it things you already knew, so I say learn the vocabulary of cause, but also beginn to look around you and start naming things around you and the actions you do, but beginn with easy things and as better as you get you can take on more and more complex objects and activities you can take on.
Writing is the best way of memorizing. Very underrated.
Danke für die Beratung
Gerne. :)
Look say cover write check has worked for me since primary school, I stopped learning Korean for almost 2 years and I can still read quite alot of the characters (hangeul) I think that's the spelling.
Sie sehen sehr cool aus. Ich möchte darüber versuchen. Vielen dank.
Ich glaube ich sehe nicht so cool aus, aber danke.
Thank you ! It´s useful ! :)
You are saving my life
Thank you, yes I came up with this idea on my own and it works the best for me. I am learning 200 words a week with out any difficulties. To speak and understand German language just on daily basis it is suggested to learn about 1000 words and yes it works. Danke
hi i also wanna learn german words but i cant/ how can i find those words ? could you send me pls my insta account is: ilaydaguzel1997 thanks a lot
The method that works for me is Memrise. Not the flashcards, because that becomes silly over time and that is for beginners. Memrise allows you to type the word every time and it also has the pronunciation. I'm doing a 5000 thousand words course in Memrise (every word with plural included), and it's the best way I can think of to learn vocabulary.
I think it is much better to learn words through sentences especially words that deal with abstractions.
Thanks a lot.
The best way to learn the words is to really, really need to know the meanings of the words to survive. Also, it has been shown that writing rather than typing words leads to better remembering.
thanks to your tips.will try singing!
Very useful
vielen danke mann 😍
Danke!
I study with a small amount of cards. If you're trying to memorize 20 words at one sitting, you'll overload your brain. I'll get 2 groups of 3-cards. I have a free, boxing timer ap where I can create timed rounds. I do four, two minute rounds with a 15 second break between rounds. I start with stack #1. I read the English word aloud, flip the card and read the German. I then place it at the back of the 3 card stack (flipped) and continue. It forces me to alternate German/English. I do round 1&2 somewhat moderate/fast. After round 1, I put down stack #1 and study stack #2, and repeat the process with those 3 cards. After that round, I go back to stack #1 and then back to stack #2. These 4 rounds total take about 9 minutes. I then take a 5 minute break to reset my head and repeat with new cards. I find that a timer keeps me on a schedule. If I have note cards without a timer, I'll daydream or get distracted.
+9StickNate That sounds like a great method.
Sounds like some good tips. Cheers, mate!
Personally, I am an audio visual learner therefore it helps me to not only write out the words, but also hear them. Although, I usually write out words in one language. Then I turn over the page to test my memory, by attempting to duplicate that list as many times correctly as possible until the vocabulary becomes memorized.
I believe related groups of words are easier to recall. Than random words that are unrelated. Such as words for articles of clothing, or rooms in a house, and so on.
I did learn words such as ' die Mauer' using the method of creating a mental picture like this: picture a woman pushing a lawnmower towards a wall. The woman represents the grammatical gender of the German word for wall, and lawnmower sort of gives an English word that has a similar sound to the German word 'Mauer' and the fact the woman is moving to towards the wall essentially points out the object for emphasis.
That method does work, because even if I forget what 'wall' is in German. I can see the mental picture of that woman pushing a lawnmower towards a wall, then I recall it. Then I know it is: die Mauer = the wall. One common statement from the cold war era is: Die Mauer ist weg. Thankfully it has been torn down.
I also have used stickers to label different things around my house and each time I see them I can say: das Badezimmer, die Küche, das Buch... und so weiter... but I need to extend that
These are great methods of learning vocabulary.
Hey where can I find that kind of videos? Please leave a link
Danke
About Don’t listen to music, I have some counter arguments that I’d like you to explain.
What if you listen to music without lyrics?
What if the music lyrics are sung in German?
What if you have a noisy household?
Music without lyrics is sometimes ok, but be careful that it isn't something that is catchy enough that you hum along or you find yourself paying more attention to the music than the vocabulary.
Lyrics sung in German are great for learning vocabulary, if you are using the song to learn the vocabulary, but in this video I was talking about listening to music in the background while trying to learn vocabulary. If the music has lyrics of any kind in any language, you are more likely to be distracted by it than to be helped by it. It is best to leave this kind of music to when you can focus on the music to get the most out of it.
If you have a noisy household, I would recommend noise canceling headphones, but there are alternatives to listening to music. You can either just use the headphones as a way to block out the noise by merit of the noise canceling features or you can play some sounds that won't detract from your learning, but will still drown out the sound of the distracting noise. This could be white noise, ocean sounds, rain, or other ambient sounds. All of those options are better than listening to music with lyrics.
Very helpful video. And I subscribed.
But I think my girlfriend would leave me, if she walked in and I was sitting on my own singing "bequem, bequem, bequem. Bequem means comfortable" 😂 also, I've just ordered German demystified from amazon. Thank you for the recommendation 👍
What about listening to classical music since it typically has no lyrics? I don't normally listen to music while studying German, but I have thought about it. Your comments in another video about people complaining that some videos are "boring." I agree with you; there are aspects to learning a language (or anything for that matter) that are not so exciting. Again, I agree. Not everything in life is going to be "fun."
There have been studies that show listening to "white noise" music (music without lyrics & isn't distracting, like something with a fast tempo) helps you recall the information later. It also serves to drown out other distractions. The point in the video was that you shouldn't listen to music with lyrics.
Und Jett ich werde nie der schmetterling vergessen 😜 Das ist genial
I always do the singing thing when my medication stops working because I'm so hyperactive then
Amazing Videooooo:)
good
thanks handsome that was so helpful
I teach Mandarin Chinese to kids. I also encourage them to sing the Chinese vocabulary and simple sentences. I encourage them to create their own Chinese lyrics and sing them out.
the best way that works fine for me was learning words through short stories and movies
how about for learning the verbs itself? do i need to add the das,die and der for the verbs?? bc as u pointed out before that we should clarify our goals, my goal is to learn the basic words of the german(i hve a list for it, they are adverbs, pronouns, nouns, verbs, adjectives and names) so having this goal and all im starting to wonder if im approaching the german vocab wrong bc for ex. im starting with 10 basic survival verbs which is to:be,go, have, want,do,understand, speak, sleep, eat, and drink. so im wondering if i needed to add the pronouns and the tenses as well.
Not sure if you still need an answer to this question or not, but only nouns have an article (der, die, das). Verbs don't have any. Der, die and das mean "the" so it wouldn't make sense to use them with verbs.
In addition to what Miss Linda said, remember that you have to conjugate verbs. Most of them follow the same pattern, but be careful because there are irregular verbs as well.
Do you think putting colours to words and objects would work? So blue being maculine, pink feminine and green for neutral.
Adding color is a great way to help solidify the genders of the nouns with the nouns themselves. I know a lot of my students who do this.
I can remember words and numbers but the difference in sentence structure is what gets me.
If you are talking about word order, I have a few videos about that. You can find all of them from the 3 Minuten Deutsch Series in the link below.
ua-cam.com/video/xPdu7dq-l4c/v-deo.html
I like memrise for a couple of reasons: first you have a native speaker pronounce; second the timed review exercise is so effective and FAST!!!
I actually like it enough to have made my own course on there for my two current series. I'm a bit behind on updates for the B1 series, as I have been pretty busy, but most of the episodes are there. I started making a version for the A1/A2 series, but I haven't gotten very far in the list. Check them out if you are interested.

Learn German with Herr Antrim thanks i will check it!
I listen to German songs while revising German lol it's useful
Yesterday I thought you uploaded a 3 hour video but I no longer see it. Did you take it down?
I did. It will be out soon, but it isn't ready for public release yet. Sorry.
Danke schön
Wenn lerne ich einem neuen deutsch vokabeln wort, zeichne ich eine bild von den ding.Meiner Meinung nach, helfe es mich ganz viele
apologies for my rudimentary German;I've only been tryna teach myself for a month, but is that how you would say it in German?or did I butcher the whole thing?
Wenn man nur seit einem Monat Deutsch lernt, ist das nicht so schlecht, aber es gibt ein paar Fehler. Ich habe die Sätze korrigiert.
Wenn ich ein neues deutsches Wort lerne, zeichne ich ein Bild von dem Ding. Meiner Meinung nach hilft es mir sehr viel.
Learn German with Herr Antrim thanks for the help! Could you do a quick explanation on what's wrong in English?is wenn a subordinate clause that's why lerne is at the end? also, how do I go about the adjective endings?
Yes, "wenn" is a subordinating conjunction, which pushes the verbs to the space around the comma in the middle.
Most of your other errors were due to the genders of nouns. "Wort" is neuter, which requires the indefinite article "ein" when used as the subject of the sentence or as the direct object, as it is in your sentence. This in turn changes the adjective ending to match a neuter noun after an indefinite article in the accusative case, which is -es.
The gender of both "Bild" and "Ding" is neuter, also. "Bild" is your direct object in the second clause, which means it is also accusative, which requires no extra letters for the indefinite article "ein". The preposition "von" requires the dative case, which is why we change "ein" to "einem" for the word "Ding".
The verb "helfen" is not only irregular (it requires an "i" instead of "e" in the "du" and "er, sie, es" forms), but it also require the dative case. For these reasons I changed "helfe" to "hilft" and "mich" to "mir".

Learn German with Herr Antrim for adjective endings and pronouns, its a matter of cases ,but for a verb's regularity, would it be safe to say that u have to memorise all of them by heart? and whats the difference between ganz and sehr? dont they both kinda mean "a lot" in english?
There are rules for the stem-changing verbs, too. You still kind of have to remember which ones fall into which category, but for the most part, it is just another pattern to learn. (Video about it here: bit.ly/2rYgr34)
There is a big difference between "ganz" and "sehr". While "ganz" means "completely" or "quite", "sehr" means more like "very".
Ex.
Der Konzertsaal ist sehr voll. - The concert hall is very full.
vs
Der Konzertsaal ist ganz voll. - The concert hall is completely full.
About the music while studying, what do you think about listening to music in german?
Singing Rammstein before and after german classes really helped me, getting my mind ready for german conversations and of course, introducing new vocabulary to me :D
+Gonzalo Landau Before and after is fine imo. If you absolutely must listen to music while studying then listen to instrumental music.
I think listening to German music is good for the learning process for a long list of reasons, but if you are studying and trying to memorize something, I would argue it is still a distraction.
+Gonzalo Landau Sorry for such a late reply, but I've had very strong benefits to listening to German music, BUT NOT while studying. Take the time to listen to the music, and reading the lyrics in German with an English translation which are super easy to find online. You'll learn a ton of new phrases, and words, plus they stick in your head better since they're lyrics to a song :)
+Nick H I agree!
Have you found any other artists besides Rammstein?
What do you think about listening to German music music while learning German? I feel like it doesn't confuse me...
Listening to music is a distraction when trying to learn vocabulary separate from the music. If you are listening to it while doing other tasks it can be helpful. In the video I was specifically talking about learning new vocabulary.
I have tried to listen to music while studying or doing homework. It doesnt work with me at all. I need quiet... Thank you for the tips.
Some people concentrate on homework better while listening to music and it can actually keep them on task for longer, but while learning vocabulary or trying to memorize something, the research is pretty clear that it isn't helpful.
Na ja ich kann schon deutsch sprechen aber der artikel oder nicht alle wörter verstehen
Hello guten Tag, do you have a reference for english speakers to practice Deutsch writing? zb writing a paragraph? like a story , reports and the likes? Vielen dank für ihren Zeit
I'm not entirely sure what you are asking for, but I generally don't spend much time talking about writing on this channel. It is mostly about spoken German. I do have quite a few stories on this channel, however, which are animated or with puppets. Is that what you are looking for?
I'm learning German online. And they are requiring us to do some paperworks like interpreting forms from the hospital and putting into words what the detail has to offer thank u for your continuous efforts
Unfortunately, I do not have anything like that yet. I will be doing some German forms in future videos, but they will be more basic forms than what you are probably looking for.
With so much thanks!
Thank you very much Stoqn!
what if white noise songs? Yesterday I read a book ,,How we actually learn'' and it says music helps backed by science and I feel guilty for listening nothing while learning German.
Yes. What I was meaning in this video was any music with words. Words in the background while trying to learn foreign words causes you to mix the two or get distracted. My high school students claim they concentrate better when there is music playing, but you can't memorize German words while singing along with Drake. :) With classical music or even ambient sounds like waves or other white noise sounds, you can connect the music to the vocabulary and end up remembering more of it.
I make up things that go with the word like for Wie i think its pronounced as 'vee' and 'vee' rhymes with flee so i then think HOW did that get here? and there Wie-How and then for Welche i think of squelch WHICH is gross Welche-Which see! try it! it might work for you
This is a pretty effective method for my students, too.
I have to write the words down to get them in my brain.
I struggled to remember the gender of spoon, fork and knife in German until I imagined moving anti-clockwide from the spoon to the fork to the knife on the table and that's der, die das 😀.
I use different colors for different genders (red- Fem, Grey - Neuter, Black- Masc) It works for me, try it :)
God!
You are right!
drink a holiday latte while doing flash cards?
What about instrumental music with no lyrical content ?
This really depends. Some people are so musically inclined that they find themselves humming along or otherwise getting distracted by music of all kinds; lyrics or not. Others find it relaxes them and allows their brain to shut out other distractions around them and therefore learn better. I am on the fence on this one, because I have found some instrumental music can be helpful, but other types can be distracting. I would leave that one up to the individual learner.
I use Anki to organise my flaschcards! it's a great method !
I have heard great things from Anki, but I haven't tried it for myself yet. Maybe that will be a future resource review for me.
Can u please make the video for practicing a1 test of German.....
I'll look into it, but I'm not terribly familiar with the European language standards (A1, A2, etc).
+Learn German with Herr Antrim I have an exam and I am searching on how to do good in Writing part Where we should write a letter. Please Help me. You are the one to whom I expect a lot....
That is specific enough that I could make a video about that. I'll start writing, but I'm not sure when I can fit it into the schedule. When is your exam?
Words are a piece of cake, but nothing seems to work for me when it comes to memorizing gender, which is such a huge deal in German. But I'm determined to find an easy solution, and I'll keep you posted. :)
I have 2 videos about that. Maybe one of those will be helpful for you.

The absolute best way to learn (anything, and in this case, German) is to develop your *own* system for learning.
Think about it. Why do so many German teaching channels and organisations say they developed _their own_ approaches for learning German because the _traditional_ (aka someone else's method) did not work for them?
