Passing 1%ers & MC's

  • How do you pass 1%ers and outlaws on the highway, while respecting MC Protocol. Most of the time 1#er MCs riding in the pack are moving so fast and in such tight order that you may never even be presented with an opportunity to pass them. And in general passing 1%ers while riding in your MC's pack is just not a good idea. But there are some instances where you may be in a situation where you have to pass a 1%er MC. IF so you will find that MC protocol does offer a solution that can get you safely past without violating, or being disrespectful. Black Dragon explores this very touch subject.

    Never had a problem with clubs riding too slow. Back in the early 80's I had a KZ650 with KN's and 4-1 Kerker, was riding into Chicago from Hammond running around 70 when three Black Panthers pulled beside me. They looked at me I looked at them and their lead pointed behind him, I slid in behind them and we ran 80 plus down the Loop. No cop problems and cars got the hell out of our way, when they got to their exit they waved and I waved back, and then slowed back down, but it was a sweet ride and I will never forget that.

    Long distance motorcyclist here, I ride single and always ask tail gunner to pass and then acknowledge captain on the way by, riding in a group is not easy and for the safety of the whole group rules have to be laid down and strictly followed, it's not about feeling superior at all, it's about knowing what and where everyone is in the group, The Captain is responsible for everyone and sets those rules, by respecting the group as a single motorcyclist if later on I'm broken down in the middle of Wyoming and that same group comes along they would help, I have seen plenty of MC's helping others along the road even broken down cars changing tires and such, I've never met anyone in a MC that was a bad guy even though I ride a Suzuki Vstrom Adventure bike I still get offered a beer in the parking lot they're hanging out at.

    I'm a solo rider coast to coast. I ride a Kawasaki Voyager. Hell I'm 58 years old I don't have to worry about passing a MC club. I'm cruising along cruise control on probably under posted speed limits lol... But it's all about respect man. Treat people no matter who with respect. 99% of the time you'll get it back . Ride on brothers!!! ✌

    I’ve ridden now for 36 years and this video (nicely done)
    Just reinforces my long standing belief that clubs regardless
    Of designation just add and over complicate riding motorcycles
    At least for me, but I can’t even stand just doing organized
    Tours with schedules.
    But you do a good job explaining the concepts.

  • @krisn8820

    I ride how I want to ride. Not causing anyone issues, but if you are going slower and I can safely pass, I'm going around. Deal with it. I pay tax and registration to use the road and have just as much right to be on the road.

    • @jonzuihgaming7558
      @jonzuihgaming7558 6 років тому +4

      Kris N to be fair mate, it's got nothing to do with elitism, not that you said that mind you, or MC's/1%ers owning the road it's just a safety thing. If you're behind a pack and you can't see the front, just hang back wait for someone to wave you through, the front is usually in contact with the back so they can see wether it's safe to pass or not. Cause if you do and you don't know or see what's oncoming and you pass you're putting both you and that pack in danger. Like I said not just an MC thing or tradition or protocol, just a good general guideline to follow for the safety of anyone on the road.

    New to this motorcycle world and I found this video fascinating but here...the comments section, only proves people in many cases just simply suck at getting along with others regardless of what they ride or drive. I’m not saying I’m a people person by any means and that’s one reason I bought a bike, to be free and not have people in my face. With that said, more people absolutely need more respect in all aspects of life. Ride on brothers and live the life you want no matter who disagrees.

    Good information if you are into that whole club/patch/vest thing, I personally got past that when I was about 15. I am 51 years old and have been riding for about 45 of those years on type of motorcycle or another, from dirt bikes, to Harley, to crutch rocket to cafe racers, etc... When I come upon a group of bikes ahead that are going slower, I simply approach them with caution and when it is safe to do so, I turn my blinker, pass them safely and give them a wave, I don't pay attention to what they wear, what their hair looks like, if they are whatever... I use road caution and courtesy and go about my business, and I have never had anyone get upset or chase me or anything like that... No different than if I am driving my truck and another vehicle is traveling slower than I am, check for safety, blinker, and away I go about my business, regardless of what vehicle it is, or if it is a black limo with a drug king ping in it or a highway patrol car... Just go about your business without making an ass of yourself and you will always be OK.

    My passing a club story: I came up to them at the start of a rare straight section of a twisty mountain road. They were going significantly slower than me. If I stayed behind, I'd be stuck there for miles, crawling through the twisties. Not fun. So I downshifted, pinned it, blew past the whole pack. Gave them a wave and disappeared around the next turn. I never saw them again.
    Don't remember if they were 3-piece or monopatch, it's been too long. They were maybe 30 bikes in side-by-side formation.

    As a performance cruiser rider, I just like speed, curves and throwing sparks. I've passed many 1% riders, formations occasionally, and by NOT putting any of them at any risk, I have yet to have a problem, save for when we passed a Gold Wing group, where they got pissed enough for a couple to zip ahead of us (and we were buggin' it) to show their "dominance" ...so they used their 6 cylinders to show us twin riders up. I was SO impressed...!

    • @garychandler4296
      @garychandler4296 7 років тому +1

      Oh, and I don't relate well to your "young club vs old club" ideaology, because it's mostly H.O.G. riders, riding clubs in general, that I have a problem with, inasmuch as they usually don't respect OUR ride to either momentarily share a lane letting us pass,(AND the rocket riders) and just sit there in the way, blocking our ride with their cluelessness and lack of riding skills.
      GEORGIA ALLOWS lane sharing for bikes, the northern part of the state has numerous PULLOVERS to allow faster traffic, and btw, I'm 64 this month, and our motto is still " if the boards ain't sparkin' you're just parkin'"!
      Not that I'm special; I just wanna pass the slugs.

      BS. -There are a few stock performance cruisers, but I am one of many who have taken factory slugbikes and fixed what the factory fouled.
      2005 Heritage, last of the carburetted model years, low-slung, slow, no lean angles. Add 2" over forks, darkside rear tire, Intiminator tuned fork valves and lighter oil, and I have the same lean angles as a 2010 Sportster.
      Add 2-1glasspack exhaust, Boyesen X-wing to carb, rejetting (for a year!) and Andrews 21 torque cams, and in 3 easy blips of the throttle, stoplight traffic is far behind you, without even trying.
      Go hit the twisties and watch the occasional sportbikers look back, wondering how in heck are those big cruisers still behind us!
      God, I love riding!

  • @ShaneShepherd
    @ShaneShepherd 6 років тому +13

    I think a lot of riders - when they hear about "rules"/guidelines like this - need to understand the purpose behind them. These rules aren't just about respecting the club. They are about respecting safety. This was my response to a comment below:
    You may consider it ridiculous. But, when riders are "in a pack" they have these guidelines for riding safety.
    Like when a pack changes lanes. My old club: Road Captain (riding in the front or second row depending on the situation) signals lane change. Sgt at Arms (pulled drag/at the rear) and initiates the lane change to block the traffic in the intended lane. The rest of the pack moves over like a snake forward with the front of the pack moving last. This ensures the whole pack can move over safely.
    The reason another group asks permission to pass is not because of ego. It is so the leading group can deny if they need/are planning a lane change for their club. This prevents you/your group from getting caught in the middle of the other pack. If you are moving faster this could cause issues - that is another reason you don't "blow past" - if a cage makes a sudden movement and the pack being passed has to make an evasive lane change you don't run into them.
    Younger/less trained members may think it is more about respect/machismo. But, it is really about respecting each other's safety.

      kind of like one big truck and trailer i would say, as a normal road user when i overtake a MC group i tend to act like there one big Truck with a trailer, one big unit. so i indicate first wait for the rear guard to notice it or wait a few seconds so they can have time anticipate my overtaking then wait till the road to my side is clear to overtake and then keep a safe distance from them as i don't want to cause chaos by being forced into there formation by a poor car driver bad driving, then overtake as fast and safe as possible then continue on my way. the same as i would do with a bus or truck.

    I met some Black 1%ers when I was a prospect in another non 1% club, and they were extremely nice folks. I talked to them, knew my role as a prospect, and I didn’t have one single problem. If you act like you have half a brain, some semblance of common sense, and don’t believe in making debts that your ass can’t cash, you should be good. Not all will be like that, but I’d hope they’re the exception rather than the rule. What does get me are those groups who wear 1%er patches and past TV, some “friends”, or bad commercials who think they’re “suddenly” bad over a diamond with “1%er” in it. Keep up the good videos Black Dragon National President.

    I've been riding in an motorcycle club for many years and can add a little to this conversation. Motorcycle clubs no matter how serious of a club understand that the vast majority of riders don't have a clue about MC protocol. Nobody in most clubs gives a shit if you pass them doing 110 mph. Nobody's going to say anything to you at the next gas stop as long as you weren't driving in a way that would endanger me or one of my Brothers in our pack. Any rider who was endangered would have something to say to you at the next stop, so that's not a club thing. However like this man says, clubs do follow a certain protocol between one another. When we roll up on another club, we"ll look over and nod and maybe give a fist salute and then get a nod or a sign back and then we'll roll on past. This isn't done because we need permission to pass, but as a common courtesy and an acknowledgment of respect we may have for the other club. Its part of motorcycle club tradition. We don't care or expect non club riders to know or understand this. Having said this, if one club blows past another without giving this common courtesy its seen as some serious disrespect. And maybe for whatever reason one club may do this to another to demonstrate exactly how much of a lack of respect they have for them in the first place. And maybe they'll have a conversation at the next stop or maybe they won't. It just depends on a lot of factors.

      One summer when I was a kid,before I had a motorcycle, I formed a group of bicycle riders.We added extended forks to our bikes,spray painted them black because well,c'mon black bikes are badass. Put cards in our spokes to make motorcycle noises.Kracker Jack tattoos on our arms and rolled up our sleeves,rode around the neighborhood like we owned the place.So much fun.I miss those days.

    My advise after 40 plus years riding on 6 different motorcycles regarding passing clubs in formation? Just don't get in their way. I was in a hurry and caught up to a couple dozen 1%ers hauling ass (80mph) in formation in the fast lane on a straight stretch of interstate. I remained in the middle lane when I caught up to them doing better than 90. Without hesitation I proceeded to pass them, and as I did so, held my open left hand down and outside of my knee. Just like I do when I salute a Brother riding the opposite direction on a two lane road. I momentarily turned my head to admire a few of the finer bikes and gave a thumbs up when I did. As I passed the Prez I raised my hand and gave them a peace sign. Personally, I don't think they gave a rat's ass about any of it, and I sure as hell wasn't worried about meeting them at a bar or gas station down the road because I didn't somehow ask "permission" before I passed.

Of course, living and riding up here in Western Washington could easily be a big part of the problem, however, my association with alot of the local clubs has a tendency make me expect common respect when it's most always given. I don't hate or disrespect bikers, but I'm definitely not part of their world and I get sick of people calling me a biker with the implication that I must be an alcoholic, drug addicted loser just because I ride a bike. It was simpler years ago. If someone was on a Harley and dressed like a biker, you could pretty much assume he was. Now the roads and coffee shops are overrun with cheesedicks who watch Sons of Anarchy, buy themselves a metric cruiser, dress up in their pirate costumes and hang around telling themselves they're badasses. I'm not part of their world either and I really don't like hearing them call me Bro and talking about some biker code that means nothing to me. You do your thing, I'll do mine. I've been watching your videos and have enjoyed them and have learned a lot of the information over the years myself one way or another. When talking about 1%'ers I have a story. I was stationed in South Dakota back in the 80's and got to attend Sturgis for 5 years. I just like to ride my bike into town, park, and just check out everything going on. This was around the 50th year of Sturgis. That year a famous 1% club came to down and I was just walking down the sidewalk with others in public. The club was riding by and I was like wow, check this out and just watched. About 40 to 50 members. Up ahead of us a couple whipped out a camera and began taking pictures. (Before cell phones) Suddenly the group stops and a few members walk over and confront them. I don't mean pulled over stop and parked, I mean came to a stop in the middle of the road bringing everything to a stop. Minutes later the person with the camera opens it and hands biker the roll of film. Biker pulls out and exposes the roll of film and hands it back to them and goes about their business. Like you mentioned on your videos about the people who write tuff comments of going to do this or that you're 100 percent correct. NOTE: Someone is bound to say it was you taking the picture dude. It wasn't, but I wanted to. I was part of the base security forces and we got briefed on who was expected to attend Sturgis and how to interact with "Outlaw" bikers should we come in contact with them both on and off duty. I just watched your video of meeting a 1% where you talk about picture taking. I wasn't trying to overstep what you're doing; was just sharing an experience I had a long time ago.

      Hey Black Dragon I agree with Squire SCA and I guess I could introduce myself I'm Jeff Yoder the ol'broke down scooter tramp, exbiker, Vietnam 🇻🇳 Era veteran and and as I was about to say I agree 👍 with Squire SCA that your educational videos on UA-cam my only sort of reliable place to see them cause I'm having to try to piggy back onto the wifi connection for this assisted living home 🏡 I'm in these days cause I'm 72years years old (as of Friday July 15th, 2022) and some health issues from about a year and a half ago (a major stroke and a couple of minor strokes )landed me here but it's a roof over my and at my age (recently turned 72years old and the health issues I mentioned my retirement from riding has really been finalized but it's 👌 cause I've got plenty of bittersweet memories to look back on continue to be sort of amazed that I'm still around and 1⃣ of the last tattoos I ever got says it all pretty much with a simple I'm still Here, so any w Black Dragon keep up your good work and keep the rubber side down,

      @@jeffyoder8105 I think that a lot of the confusion comes from the word "club". To some people, that just means a club. To the other ones, club means literally "gang". When you look at the 1%rs, the only difference between them and the Bloods, or MS13, etc... is that they have bikes.
      So if you join a GANG, then following the "rules" of the gang lifestyle make sense I guess.
      But most people aren't interested in joining criminal organizations like gangs. They just want to belong to something, they ride, so they form or join a club.
      Two very different mindsets with two different sets of rules.
      Dragon has a reaction video to some guy in his car gassing up, wearing a Sons of Anarchy vest and some goober on his little Harley rolls up and gives him shit for wearing a vest and demands that he take it off. F that. If some Wild Hawg wants to roll up on me and tell me what to wear, he can toss off. If he wants to get physical, he better be a faster draw and a better shot than I am. The notion of just walking around telling grown men, strangers, what they can and cannot wear, is patently idiotic, and goes against the "freedom" and "rebel" lifestyle that they claim to embrace...
      Its high school in bike form, and as adults, we don't have to play that game any more. Most of us moved on from high school. Those that didn't, and want their "hierarchy" and crap, can do that amongst themselves. Forcing it on others isn't freedom, its tyranny.

    This video is way too long for what he was going to say about actually doing the passing. If anyone is wondering he starts to talk about it at 13:35

    I only know that a group of Harleys are in my way.You could be a 1 %er or a dentist.It really doesn't matter.I am only going to wait so long before I pass.When you get a line of people behind you going up a canyon,pull over and let people pass.Respect is a two way street.Maybe you guys ride fast enough that this doesn't happen that often,but in the Colorado mountains most Harleys are driver slower than R.V.s
