- Every great show has a curtain call. For the biggest surf contest on the planet, not even the cascading sun could diminish the Vans US Open’s sizzling fire. Over the last nine days, Stab x Vans’ variety show, The Pick-Up, has covered all things Huntington Beach.
On finals day, the cup overflowed, and Olympic skateboarder Zion Wright joined the news desk bright and early to kick off the final episode and lend his expert opinion to the conversations at hand.

I started skating at 5 roller derby metal wheels in 1960. Then at 7 clay wheels and 17 Cadillac. @ 18 road riders. They helped @ Kenter School.
I designed and built one of the first skateparks in 1977 called Golf N Fun in Santa Barbara. I ran it for 2 years. I kept skating for another 25 years.
But after I finally learned to surf in 1969. Skating, like thousands of us baby boomers in So Cal, was always secondary to surfing. Carving ruled the way we surfed, mostly due to less our stiffer era single fins. But we went fast and had fun with our own colorful ways. Spray on!

Skaters has 40+ years to practice on a stationary wave. Skateboarding is and always will be influenced by surfing. Even if the technical skills progression is greater . Skateboarding is the son. Surfing will always be its daddy

Well actually im pretty brown now. I'm changing colours frim white to red to brown and back and when im sick im green. Forget colours thats all bs!
