  • Handspring dreams? Let's first look at how you do the butterfly.
🙋🏽‍♀️When I ask what you would like help with, 'handspring' is one of the most frequent responses.
Why do we want to handspring? Because it represents strength and badassery!
But when our only strategy is kicking up, do we really know where we are going? Or what alignment we're looking for at the top?
In this video, I offer some insight into a progression I teach.
It's all about learning to re-organize a 'butterfly' to be:
💪🏼More arm dominant (push-pull in action)
    ↕️More vertically stacked
    🔮Full of possibilities
Generally, for handsprings, I teach true grip, then cup grip, then twisted grip-from the top down, starting as a positional isometric and following principles of progressive overload.
Why? I want both of us to be sure that you know how to support yourself safely before adding
bigger motions ( like kicking up and orientation change).
And- I want to reduce the likelihood that you will bypass muscular support and hang from your ligaments (as twisted grip tends to allow).
ligament dangling = welcoming injuries ( @doctorkenpoleninja says so)
So, I recommend starting the journey to handspring with:
👉🏼A strong sense of static positional support
    👉🏼 Learning to land lightly
👉🏼 Improving body awareness while inverted
    ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Btw, I edit these videos myself, and it takes me a long while. But, when I see that this material helps reduce frustration and help pole more safely-I feel affirmed that it's totally worth it.
Thank you for watching and commenting!

very good video. I was lucky enough to start in a studio where the butterfly was trained from the start with the body away from the pole. When it worked well, it was only a short walk to Hanspring. The version in which you swing into the handspring was only allowed if you could hold it in a controlled manner from the invert/butterfly. I have to admit I tried it before, it gave me a 4 week break from training because I injured my shoulder. As a tip, if you can't keep the handspring clean from the invert, try not to swing into it from a standing position, your muscles don't like that at all.

This is so useful! One of the very few videos I found outlining how to perform extended butterfly in order to gain confidence and strength to go into handsprings/Ayesha. Such an overlooked progression but I feel it deserves so much more attention. Thank you!

I've been working on Ayesha for a very long time. But practicing this type of entry has finally made it happen. Funny enough my handspring Ayesha was the 1st version I got, it was the on-the-pole version that eluded me. So huge thanks!!

That was the best tip I saw on UA-cam to this topic. I tried for month to get this trick out of the Inverted crucifix or the butterfly and it was so scary and I fell to the side so often!
But now I tried it with your method and I finally knew how to use my arms and how to push with the bottom hand - which is really hard. That was so much easier and less scary.

Hi Marlo great stuff and I have learned a lot. Question: How did it take to get you to this level and how often & long did you train?

Amazing video, so clear & concise! Great examples of good and bad form so we can spot it in our own practise. That music at the end was a bit of a jump scare tho XD

Can you do the same method in reverse grip? This was so easy to do in true grip, so that I you for this great butterfly tip, but true grip still scares me

I thought this would show at least some instruction on the handspring. I was never taught to do the butterfly from a knee hook or to have my torso close to the pole. 🤷🏾‍♀️
