  • The gorgeous Ozora limited express train runs from Sapporo to Kushiro in Hokkaido, Japan. I rode its entire length one sunny winter day. My route actually began in Otaru, where I took a local train on a stunning seaside ride in the snow to Sapporo. From there, the Ozora train goes through mountains and valleys and tunnels, winding around tight curves and plowing through snow. The line has been known to put severe wear and tear on trains, with frequent cancelations, delays, and even derailments. And yet, JR Hokkaido manages to maintain this daily service hundreds of kilometers across this huge island... even through deep snow in the dead of winter, which is when I rode it. This is one of the most beautiful and technically impressive train rides in all of Japan.

I’ve learned so much about Japan watching your videos! I never knew Japan had a cold north! And I’m 65, shame on me, I guess. Love love your videos. Arigatou!

You're welcome! Yes, it's a rather small country, but stretches from tropical to frozen

Good idea. Would be fun to see it in a different season. I also think renting a car and driving some of those areas would be fun too, and the only way to really see life along the line outside the train. (Problem is, I'd need a license...)

These videos from Japan are just fantastic! Thank you so much for the education and entertainment! You are documenting this amazing country and the way you approach the demographic decline will be appreciated for a long time. Your content just moves me like not much does these days. Thank you sir!!!

Love this train trip Jeremy. If things were only up to me, it would be an instant itinerary item for me. I think my Japanese wife may cringe. but maybe not as long as there is a decent dining car. A definite goal for me.
Jeremy, I hope you share your hotel and food and drink scene in Kushiro on the next video.

Yeah that was nice. Not many of these trains per day, compared with Osaka, but they're far from full

Those ocean views from the train! Wow! Why do you never have your coat zipped up closed? You go on about how cold it is yet your jacket is always open...Love your video's! Button up! Stay warm!

Heh, I guess I mean the air is cold, but *I'm* not too cold because I have so many layers of shirts on. I try to keep the coat open because my microphone is clipped to the shirt collar. Plus it doesn't occur to me...!

Your Japan railway videos are so darn good. So how was the treat in the fridge? Nice catch of that fox! Have a great Thursday! Keep in touch.

I'm sorry to say that I sort of forgot about the jelly thing in the fridge, after eating my actual convenience store dinner. I was worn out and just had a hot bath upstairs and went to sleep!

Total bummer, was waiting for those scenic ocean panoramas but the darkness caught up to you Mr Buttercup.

Haha, that's true. I'm used to the frequent train options of the Osaka area; had to get used to the mere 4-5 options a day in Hokkaido, which sometimes push you past dusk

That was fun. I was beginning to wonder if you'd be sleeping on the train -- are there any lines that have sleeping cars? You have been blessed with good weather so far -- I'll try to keep it up. When you coming back to the US, or have you already been and gone? -- charlie, sacramento ca

There are some, but very few, overnight trains in Japan (like 2 or 3 *maybe*...?). There used to be more, but I think some have been replaced by shinkansens (which don't run overnight). I've never taken one. I hope to ride one this year at some point. Starting to plan a trip to the US recently, but nothing is set in stone yet
