Today we check out how to write riffs and solos in an odd meter or odd time signature! For this lesson I chose 7/8 and wrote a cool little riff and apreggio section. I explain my system of note grouping in detail and we check out how to count this specific time signature. You can use the system we learn here for any other odd time signature too!
I got Toontrack ez drummer and Superior Drummer. I got off time signature midi packs from them too. This helped me out a lot. Playing to real drum sounds and the different accents makes it a lot easier than just playing to a metronome.
It's been a year so maybe you've found it already but it's called "konnakol", it's a time counting tool/system, you basically use a word in place of numbers so instead of "one-two", you'd say "ta-ka" and instead of "one-two-three" you'd say "ta-ka-ta" so counting 2+3 would be "ta-ka, ta-ka-ta". I don't know konnakol so that's not a real example but I hope it gets the function of the system across well enough
Im doing an odd time signature assignment in university right now, I decided to do 7/8 because I like the groove of it, im a hard rock guy so im trying to understand how i can incorporate odd time into metal music and not jazz (like our text book refers too). My favourite way of 7 is 2, 2, 3. This video is great 🤘
3:31 I`ve just imagined a death metal band playing and singing this lol with some growling that`s gonna be broootal! and without growl it`s math metal I guess

Sick!! your ability to express the time signatures are truly an eye opener thank you.
Please explain more about the "conical" system of counting time signatures you mentioned in 3:00

I loved these riffs. It sounds metal, but not so Alien like Prog metal;)
Thanx Bernth.. now I am beginning to understand how Meshuggah writes... Or atleast it's the starting point

Great explanation
Really helpful, mate!
Jason Becker and Marty Friedman have some of the best odd metre examples.
And then, there is Dream Theater.
Odd signatures are tight!
I want to see more...i love it
Even with the grouping in smaller bites, it still is incomprehensible to me. lol But that was a sick rhythm and solo you wrote in 7/8!
Beatiful😍🤘🤘🎸🎸
Digging the Modern Shredding lessons. Question about this lesson first bar has a power chord then 2 2 3. Does the chord not count as part as the beat?
Hey I have sleeves just like yours! Mines all hair though!!
What if you can only count to four?
🔥🔥🔥
You should avoid it odd time signatures. Unless you can see a reason for it.
