Not to take away from your awe or the skill of the musicians… but playing from memory is the norm (and the expectation) at this level. Reading music is an important skill when it comes to getting an ensemble in sync and rehearsing… but true performance and interpretation can’t happen until the music is fully internalized. It’s very similar to actors in stage plays. Past a certain point the physical presence of the script just gets in the way.

The sonorities are too ephemeral and short lived in this arrangement and in this setting to provide the ‘blossoming’ of sound that is needed in the climaxes though a recording of the performance may be more satisfying in that respect. That said these 3 guys are superb musicians and it was so beautifully executed.
That's genuinely magnificent. Tombeau is among my favorites of all Ravel, and this arrangement really brings out its harmonic lushness while emphasizing its lyrical contrasts. And what brilliant playing! A total delight!
