And in Conclusion......Top 3 Gold Pans!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 вер 2024
- After many long hard test. I have come to some conclusions on what the best gold pan is. I evaluated each of the big production pans multiple time with multiple techniques and have come to the decision that three of them stand out above the rest. These gold pan reviews were in response to my fans asking me "What gold pan to buy" or "what is the best gold pan" this 8 part series should answer that question for you. One of the results is turning out to me shocking for many.
Pans in Series:
Pyramid Pro Pan
Gold Claw Production Pan
Gold Hog Flow Pan
Garrett Super Sluice
Superchamp flat pan
Batea "The Right Pan"

Dan, if they don't like it they don't have to watch! Don't listen to them. This series was awesome and gave some great insight and knowledge about these pans. Keep the videos coming!
pro tip : watch series on flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching lots of of movies these days.
@Keenan Jimmy Yea, I have been watching on Flixzone for months myself :)
@Keenan Jimmy Yup, I've been using flixzone for since december myself :)
@Keenan Jimmy yea, I have been using Flixzone for months myself :D
Dan, you are a star, a credit to the hobby gold mining industry, there are so many poor products in our industry, there always have been. Really a breath of fresh air to find a YT who sticks to his own moral code and presents valid accurate information... There are YT gold mining channels who only think of manufactures sponsorship money, continue doing what you are doing with your honest views - its refreshing.......
Sir

those reviews were great on all those pans and the Garrett is my number one pan and I have also thought about trying other ones but I'm just going to stick to garrett for now so thanks again for the reviews
I love how you went back and tried all of the manufacturers recommended techniques even when they didn't make sense to you personally. I now really trust your conclusions in a way I didn't think I was going to be prepared to do after watching all the previous videos in the series. Big thumbs up from me.
I have to agree with you you are presenting this in the best way possible
Because of you, Dan, a lot of people are saving a lot of their hard earned money. Thank you!
Really liked the series. I agree with the gold claw being an up and comer. Honestly ive never been a fan of the gold hog..just seems gimmicky
I agree about the gold hog totally gimmick
GoldHog pans and products seem to be more of a system than stand-alone products in their own right. Not so much a gimmick as not their ideal use. I have a few of their products (sluices and the HogPan) and honestly see pretty good returns on their use. The HogPan lets me really charge through a lot of the material I’m working, and with a little forethought I’m not losing much gold at all (like making sure I’m working the pan at the top of a sluice, and using it in the material it was made for). Last year I recovered almost 16 ounces of gold using a HogPan, GoldHog sluice and mats, and a Garrett Super Sluice for the cleanup. Just my take on their products.
Their products are fantastic. But their pan is not. I think it was just adding it to the checklist. I know so many people begged them to make a pan, because of how much they like their products. But it fell flat.
Thank you, Dan! I like the super sluice, too. I have several, also!
Looking at the gold hog it seems you may loose gold out the side of it, If it does not stratify fast enough to get past the side opening before material flow carries it along and out.
This series is a stepping stone for you: criticism, tough recording, putting them out every day, serious evaluations/reviews of pans. Take care Dan. I enjoyed all of them.
I have never done what you are doing. It is very attractive to me to be able to get something valuable out of the dirt. I have spent many hours watching you and others, wondering what works and what does not work. The flat pan I predicted would have poor results. Was I ever wrong! I was amazed. I am in my 70s and in poor health and live far away from the prime gold areas, so I will most likely never do this. I watch because I enjoy seeing others benefit, in the same way, I enjoy others winning big money on the game shows on TV. Thank you all for making me feel good. Paul L.
I think you have done a great job of putting this little tests together! keep up the great content!!
Honestly I think you did this series more for those that are novices than you did for seasoned prospectors. Seasoned prospectors already have a favorite pan and know how to use it to its best ability. Thank you Dan for this series.
You're welcome!
I bought a Hog Pan before Doc made his Flow Pan. It was very expensive. He stopped making the Hog Pan in favor of the Flow Pan. I really like my Hog Pan. It can process A LOT of material and get it ready for sluicing. And the way I use it I have zero loss rate. I let my sluice do that. However, Keene has a new sluice we can shovel straight into. No classifying needed. If that thing really works, my Hog Pan just became obsolete! And yes I have Garrett Super Sluice pans because I’m constantly sampling. Never stop sampling. Never never never! Bye the way, nice series Dan. Keep up the good work.
Very well said. We all have our own strengths and weaknesses skill wise. I started on the garret, but sometimes use others.
Pay no mind to those just trying to dump on you because they are being offended for no reason.
Good morning Dan.
MANY THANKS for doing this series, it was very educational and definitely helps in selecting pans. I was happy to hear you were doing this, and am very pleased with your series and the results.
I've see others review some of these devices but your an educator and it shows in how you do your reviews. I have NO issues with your evaluations, your doing what you know how to do and it's good to see someone using these for the 1st time cause I figure that's what would happen to me too. If I can see others using the device, I can judge how I'd likely use it too. That's helpful info.
I'm curious on the Batea pan but it's pricing is higher than I'd be willing to go. I like the Flatpan, seems like a fun pan for sure. I think I'm going to try the Gold Claw for small size and portability but overall your choice of the Garrett is also my choice.
Great work! Look forward to what's coming next.
Great series Dan. Very informative. Would be fun to see all those "rude" experts have a panoff.
do you mean rude “experts” lol
@@scrotex6592 It's nice to have a punctuation expert available to correct everyone.
Your evaluations were honest and upfront with a fair chance for all pans. I actually like the Gold Claw plus the Garrett. Look forward to more amazing videos.
Spoken like a true teacher. Any negative responses should be considered, but likely dismissed. Rest well knowing that you did a good job here. Thanks
I think you did a good job at wrapping up the evaluations.
Answering most of the concerns many had about methods, and confirming the results, using them as required by the manufacturer.
Fair, in my eyes!
I had a feeling the garret SS would come out on top.i also use my extra pans for minerals and con’s that i have yet to sort through.Awsome series Dan 👍👍
Morning Dan, hope you and the family are safe! 1- the flat pan 2 - Garret Super Sluice!
Would love to see you use the flat pan on your claim to show how well it does with other types of material, I think the flat pan surprised everyone and would enjoy more content on that specific pan. Thanks for the great series!
I think my green pan was $4 like new off of amazon shipped. Works like a champ! I find gold all the time.
This testing wasn’t all about what you find ,but also what you loose when you’re doing it.
ghostdevill yup! Once you do this long enough, you start thinking about return in investment. Your time is an investment and you want all the return possible.
Been watching your pan skills for a few years now. Can't think of anyone else who I'd rather watch my friend. Full of detailed information. Great post as always Dan Hurd
Your scientific methodology is dead on. Your conclusions are accurate and honest. Can't ask for any better. Thanks for taking the time to do this for us.
Very cool demonstration of all those pans.remember some people would complain if they were clubbed with a new bat😎
The people who talk smack don't have respect and don't deserve to to be responded to so don't. That was a great series and the Garrett is definitely the best. You needed it to finish all of them. You have taught me a lot even how to pan when I first started. I value everything you teach from panning to reading the land your working. I hope you never stop doing what you do. Your friend Steve Hunter from South Carolina
Late post I know. But I thought you evaluations where accurate enough to give us a good idea which way we may jump when bying a pan. But your coments about the best pan being what your comfortable, fast & effective with, where spot on. I agree, if your good with 1 particularl pan, stick with it. Good review & vid.
Great job dan, I have watched all the review videos for each pan and for what it's worth I think you did a great job on showcasing what they can do fairly. Thanks for the amazing videos, keep it up!
Your conclusion at the end of the video is the best conclusion I’ve heard in a review video ever.
You hit the nail on the head sir.
Just because it doesn’t work for you, doesn’t mean it won’t work for someone else :)
I appreciate that!
Greetings from Kelowna, I can say I have watched all your videos and this series was just fantastic! Thank you so much, I also congratulate you for your kindness and manners... a true Canadian. I pan the mission creek often here in town. Hope to run Into you one day.
I can really respect how honest you are with your reviews.
I think you're right. Personal experience is a big key in doing anything. You can get familiar with it, know what you can do and it becomes almost a reflex to do the job.
That was an interesting series. I liked the way you displayed the results in a chart for easy comparison. Being up front about your own biases was helpful in demonstrating your commitment to being as objective as possible.
It was interesting to see the variety of pans and to think about the strategies/thinking processes that went into their creation.
As always, keep up the great work!
I've had really good luck with the gold claw. The regular one, not the production pan. But I agree, it definitely has a learning curve but I'm really figuring it out now and having good results.
Why anyone would fire off on you makes no sense to me. I got your your back against all haters. We watch because you have skills and knowledge not to mention a great personality.
I like your testing protocol.
Run dirt through the pan, catch the tailings, pan the tailings to see the loss.
Excellent methodology!
Thanks for showing the flow pan in its element Dan. There will always be trolls when you make a video. But I think you do great.
What is not to like, it is your experiences and thoughts on the subject. I enjoy all the info you share and use your tips when I feel that they can be applied on my style of panning.
I appreciate that!
Dan i just want to say that you are the man! I am very impressed with your demeanor even after people taking time out of their lives just to be rude to you about your own video! I love watching your stuff and the way you do your videos! Take care of yourself Dan.
Full disclosure. I am a Dan Fan. I viewed the Manufacturer video rebuttal for the pyramid pan and I have to say I was disappointed on a few points. Dan, I thought you were very clear on level knowledge on the pan, experience with the pan, and the material you were using and how tough it was to pan. You used it with all the pans. I thought catching the tailings and panning that was very telling. I learned a lot about the different pans. Videos were well worth it just for the knowledge gained without spending several hundred dollars. I thought the rebuttal video was telling as well. He was not using the fine material you were and he was in moving water. As a hobby gold panned, I don’t always have fast moving water and I have all different materials to pan in different areas. I get it, it is a production pan but his rebuttal video sold me on my GSS as the best all around pan as I can use it anywhere with any material and even small bodies of still water or at home in a tub. I really liked flat pan too. That was surprising. He was also just a touch rude for my taste. I would like to have seen a little more courtesy. I think a pan off is way to go. He pans your material in a big tub and you pan tailings to see what it missed. I bet he declines. As a hobby planner, I am willing to take a little bit more time to pan my material and I really don’t want to loose 30 or 40 percent. Not sure it is worth the few minutes saved. Keep up the nice work Dan. You are just a pleasure to watch and I have learned a lot about gold, gems, panning, smelting, and have seen a lot of beautiful Canadian scenery.
Thanks for the time & trouble that you've put into the "pan testing" videos. I really enjoyed them.
Please disregard the negative comments, they are more a reflection of that person's personality & isn't really your problem, it's theirs.
I really agree with your analysis of the "classification" of your samples - ie: I find that when I was using the Pyramid Pro Pan, that I received much better results if I didn't classify my samples at all. I obtained better results by having a bit of larger gravel in the pan.
Please keep up the videos, some of us have reached the stage in our lives where your videos are more enjoyable than actually going out & doing our own panning - due to health reasons.
Thanks again Dan.
Thank you for taking the time to review all the different pans ! It was a great learning series. As a beginner I've found it hard to decide which direction to go with all the different types of equipment and Techniques. I've found all your videos to be quite informative and useful. During the Betae pan demo you stated that 1/4 "- classified material was the best to use for panning. Would you please clarify why that is as opposed to 1/8" or -20 material. Thank you once again 😁😎
Garret is also best for "portability". I'll always take my Super Sluice.
Hey Dan, you can’t please all of the people all of the time. For what it’s worth, I enjoyed all your review videos. You were open, honest and transparent, and where you didn’t follow manufacturers’ recommendations, you said so and why. Everyone is going to have their favourites, but I challenge any of your detractors to do as good a job of comparing five different products, with consistent material, in as objective way as you did. Well done, and ignore the trolls! 👍
Excellent series Dan, thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge with us. I have a standard Gold Claw and a Super Sluice and like both of them. More time is needed on my GC so I feel confident about my speed and capture rates.
You are a teacher Dan, not all will get it. You are on a hiding to nothing, people will have their favourite and therefore you will be wrong.
As a fan then I’d say you did your best. You spoke truthfully and again people will argue with you.
I didn’t know a thing about what you did but you are charismatic and always pleasant, and being a teacher on something you are passionate about.
I enjoy yr videos and learning from you.
Keep on going for us fans
Great analysis Dan. Appreciated the series tremendously.
The gold hog flow pan now comes with an adapter to change the flow pan to a con box. The con box really works well to go through a lot of material in a short amount of time. Loved your findings and I concur, I love the Garrett super sluice. Thank you for all your work and very informative videos, I'm a big fan.
Thank you for all of the time you put into these, Dan. You clearly only did this for your viewers and the benefit of others. You've earned my subscription and my respect. I also ordered my first set up and am going for gold soon, myself!
Thanks for the pan assessment, I just need to move to somewhere that has gold.
Rowan, that is the amazing part. There is gold literally everywhere in the world. It is just that some areas have a much higher concentration. Find an area near you with igneous bedrock and I can promise that you’ll find gold. Maybe not a lot, but it is there.
Well Hello Dan,
I’ve watched lots of your videos, some I found useful and others were just interesting. I particularly found this series to be exceptional in my opinion. Thoughtfully executed and well planned. I like the unbiased comparison between all the pans, this series was very educational and will definitely help me if I decide to get a production pan. I’d like to see more series similar to this, on a variety of products on the evolving market today for gold prospecting and mining. Great job, and you didn’t sugar coat the ill performers! Loved it
This was an awesome series. Love the breakdowns and how well you evaluated each pan. 💪💪👍 I would like to see a series like this on sluice boxes.
Great idea ! I would like to see that also. I do know that Vo Gus has some vids on that too.
Excellent Review Dan! I've been waiting on a good speed pan comparison video . I suggest doing a best pan for clay video as well
Dan, it's a pleasure to watch your work, hear your thinking and follow your conclusions on various topics. I very much enjoy your quiet thoughtfulness. As to rude people, well keyboard warriors abound. As Chef Emril Lagassi said, with a smile, on his cooking program 'Get your own show!"
Hey Dan I agree with the Garrett super sluice in you're comparison. That is my second choice after a blue HEX pan.The one reason for this is because the tri-angular focal point that centralizes the gold in one spot after stratified in the corner, and in a valley line under your aggregate behind the riffles as you wash and tilt. The corners also work well for bottom finishing fines.
Well conclusions are in im not surprised with your conclusions. What I am surprised with is how all the pans performed. I would have thought the flow pan and the pyramid would have done best. You hit that nail right on the head. If you feel comfortable with it stick with it and use it.
Great series Dan!!! Very informative.
I'm looking forward to getting the flat pan, some day. In my area we have flower gold so I'll probably just stay with the Garret I bought. Love your work Dan, and thank you again two years into the past!
Stumbled upon your channel not even interested in prospecting and now I’m obsessed. Thanks Dan😐!
I think you did the best that you could based on the fact of the equipment and how each one is used in different ways but trying to get the same result.. Thank you for sharing your finds and opinion. It does help more than you are given credit for..
Right Dan my name is Eric and I live in Alabama in the US I have watched many of your videos and I am very impressed with your style of showing in teaching what you know about prospecting and looking for gold and what to look for and quite frankly you're about the only one I will watch you have a better mannerism and a better style of teaching that seems to go well with what I would like to learn and how I like to learn to keep up the great work you do a good job Eric from Alabama
Wow, thanks
I have been following your channel for a bit now and you earned my subscription a while ago. I definitely have the gold bug and just wish I was fortunate enough to live near an area where I could do what you do. I have done the pay dirt panning just for the experience and I absolutely loved it. If I could get that excited just panning paydirt through the mail, I could only guess how ecstatic I would be to have the opportunity to prospect or even own my own claim some day. For the time being, I will live vicariously through your experiences and learn from you and the other that I currently follow. Thank you so much Dan for posting these videos for people like me who can only dream of being able to prospect for gold and work a claim and can only experience it through watching you.
I have no criticisms at all. Your tests were well thought out and well executed. Nicely done, sir. Thank you for sharing with us. You are one of my favorite you tube channels, especially during this pandemic lock-down. Keep em coming.
Thank you very much!
Thxxx for your evaluation of the pannes. I always respect your honesty and the way you explained everything.Looking forward to see the next video.
Thank you for testing the various pans for us, And another Sunday morning of entertainment. The final video holds no surprises, the Garrett super sleuth is your go to pan for you.
The teacher training really comes out in your videos, and is appreciated.
Thanks,
Rick
That end chart was a great way of giving final thoughts.
I hope some of the manufacturers send someone out to do an in person test with you and see if their technique proves anything that your test did not. Thanks for comparing all of those pans for us Dan. You really saved some of us alot of time and money.
I hope so too!
Loved all the vids I would like to see u use all these pans randomly in some of your vids this way if u ever had to use them again then your experience goes up on them and u can give a better review on some of these pans that got a lower rating. Thanks again keep up the awesome work
Good idea
i've never panned gold in my life, but i watched all of your videos in the series (and previous videos you have made). that being said, i love prospecting videos! thanks, dan. don't let the haters get to you.
Love it Dan. What a great video. I love the smaller gold claw pan as I can one hand it and save my back.
Thanks Dan. Because of your constant teaching and dedication to your skill, I bought a Garrett set. Glad I did !
I really enjoyed watching the tests and liked that you mentioned what your intuition was telling you, because anybody who pans (or prospects for that matter) needs to listen to their intuition. As you said, if anyone does well with any of the pans they may want to stay with them, but I think they will only do well if their intuition is telling them where the gold is at any given moment in the pan. That said, I think experience is the foundation of intuition, so it boils down to getting out and doing it - lots! Thanks for your videos, they get me out there when I'm not able.
new to the world of panning and i appreciate your well thought out videos, thank you so very much..... a real pleasure to watch....
You rock. Don't let anyone tell you differently! Send 'em my way and I'll slap em sillier than they already are if they aren't nice!!
Hugs from rainy California (yay!)....
I commend your honesty on being biased towards the Garrett because that's the pan you're used to. If you had the time to use all the pans on a regular basis you could make a video of a long-term review of them all. Then there would be no biased. Congratulations on the 1 million subscribers you deserve it cuz your content is pretty awesome.
Dan you gave everyone your honest opinion on each of the pans and I agree people who leave comments should keep them kind and not be rude you are amazing at what you do and your evaluations are based on your thoughts and findings some day I hope to be as awesome at finding gold like you are
Thank you for your evaluations. You were honest and fair, giving nobody a reason to complain. Please keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
Dan if it wasn’t for your honesty and being as unbiased as you can (of course you’re going to do better with your favorite -the super sluice) but I enjoyed the series and how you used them as a novice (like myself) would approach them. Great instructional videos. Haters will hate. I look forward to your next video. -Matt Nelson Delaware USA
It just shows you what pans can and can't do as far as some material go as a beginner and the people Commenting do not see the word BEGINNER / FIRST TIME USING and how it would effect there out come . Keep up the good work love the education for when and if I were to need info have a good day
Hats off for you Dan! Your calm and instructive way of doing videos are great. As a firm believer in science I say. In Dan we trust !
Very helpful for those of us who live in states where sluice boxes aren't allowed on our public lands. I was surprised that in the last category that the batea didn't get #3 but it sounds like between that and the gold claw. That flat pan looks pretty great.
Garrett is the best, now, passout the gold maps!!!! great vid, info is nice.
Excellent series Dan. Those negative comments can get you down, just remember 90% of them come from armchair prospectors. Some of which have nothing better to do than trash talk trolling. You bring great talent and loads of positivity, not to mention the loads of information that creates an awesome learning tool. 🇨🇦Nova Scotia Strong!
I really enjoyed this series. Not only did I see a couple of pans I was looking at, I was also introduced to a few I didn’t know.
On the GoldHog pans, I think one of the big things about them is they are more of a system, than they are stand-alone products. Like use the HogPan to concentrate, the flow pan to really cut down the concentrates into a nice rich paydirt, and then their smaller sluices to start the cleanup. Each can of course be used as stand-alone products, but as a system their capture rates will be much higher. Just my take on it.
I like that you also make it a point to identify where the manufacturers say their pans are the most efficient or designed to work. The pyramid pan wouldn’t be very good in the areas I work because it isn’t designed for them (lots of shale and silt, not a lot of mud or clay), but the Claw and Flat pan would be good alternatives for areas where I am looking for a light load when getting to my work site.
Thank you Dan for doing this. It was really informative!
Loved watching this series. I'm novice and this really helped to know what to look for in a pan! I went with a garret right off the start, so I'll probably just keep going with it. Lol
I think this is a very fair recommendation. I am a bit bias towards the pyramid pro pan and gold claw but I have been using them for a while. But always have a super sluice with me as well.
Thanks!
A little bias, yes. But your evaluation was spot on. I agree with your conclusion that the super sluice is the most versatile. Thanks Dan!
for me:
1 garrett
2 garrett
3 garrett
:)
I carry 2 super sluices and a 1/2" classifier anytime i am out, plus whatever else i may need
I'm obviously a little late to this party, but an update with the Turbopan and XP "snakeskin" pans would be interesting as well. Thanks Dan!
If someone was watching me pan they would probably go insane with impatience. I stratify so often but I don't lose much gold. But I believe in the long run, I actually pan faster because I don't have re-pan the material as much🤷♂️
Ur a very patient man with a great teaching style.....dont let the haters bother you. Theyre unhappy and bored clrealy
Dan, You did a great apples to apples comparison. People will always complain so don’t let it bother you. Keep the great vids coming.
Thanks for the evaluations. I feel you gave it a fair shot at what one may expect as a novice. Based on your 10 points video as regards the basics of panning it is easier to see why some do not fair so well. Some do not stratify well which leads to gold loss. Interesting that the flat pan apparently stratified and captured well while being nearly flat. But I think it requires the larger diameter in order to work, and therefore cost.
For prospecting/sampling there should be a category. The closest category of yours is "versatility". Needs to be small, practical i.e. low water consumption, portable/backpackable. Production second to gold capture ability, time required should be short as possible.
I have gold claw and batea, my gold claw needs sidewalls like the one you tested.
Thanks again
Why is the flat bottom Garrett type pan so popular in North America??? Easy, it's the most practical for what we do, where we do it, and how we do it. Going back to the old days, prospectors hooked everything on a backpack or a mule and into the wilderness they went. Big flat or conical pans weren't practical for transporting that way. Rocks rocks and more rocks is what they were working in fast flowing western streams. As you demonstrated, conical pans don't sit well on rocks and a flat pan needs a lot of calm water. Our North American pan is just plain practical for the way we prospect in the mountains. You can stack a bunch, hang them on your backpack and away you go. AAAAAaaaand, as you also demonstrated, we're doggone good at using them. Is there any reason that we shouldn't use them? Not that I can find. Good series Dan, looking forward to the sluice mat series.
As I stated before , I just watch these videos to learn, With health conditions that prevent me from giving it a go . Your videos also help break up the political atmosphere in the US, so it is a win win for me. If I could do panning I would get a Garrett pan not because of this review but rather after watching you use one time and time again, I feel you have taught me how to use one and once upon a time I was a very good student .
Awesome
I agree with Dan, the Garret super sluice is the cheapest one out there. I got one at a Gold and Gem show last year for $10! My GF asked why do I need another one..."because they WORK...and to have a backup one"
Thanks for the great reviews Dan. You made it as fair as you could. I`m still in love with my super sluice and so far all my gold is very small flakes, and i have no trouble panning it down, even with a lot of black sand.
Still working with the gold claw. It work good on paydirt bags. But when I mixed it up with some mud I lost gold to. I did a video on it with 3 grams of gold. Thanks for the info fam. GOLD SQUAD OUT!!!
Dan I think you did your best to do a fair test and you know that it is impossible to please everyone. I have watched you for years and I agree with you that the Garrett super sluice is the best all round pan. Great video buddy
Thanks!
Nice yard. As far as your evaluation, excellent. My pan is the Garret, had one from the beginning. I love the old-timer so I'm going to pickup the Berea pan. Fell in love with it the first time I saw it.
I believe some of disgruntled people probably have one of the pans that didn't fare too well.
Keep up the great work.
Dan, I appreciate the honest reviews. I have the Garrett and love it. I am very much intrigued by both the flat pan and Battea. And will definitely give them a try! Thanks again!
Great job, thanks for the work evaluating the different designs, I appreciate the work you've put in to at least see what they are all capable of. Keep up the good work.
