My daughter is 13 and is a 3rd generation female drummer. I played in the 70s & 80s. My mom was a Drummer in the 50s & 60s.
Thats too cool! My son just started playing and I'm hoping he sticks with it. What a cool generational timeline you have
@@StephenTaylorDrums I never cared about a gender in music.
I mean, let's take the early Bolt Thrower, where the bassist, Jo-Anne Bench, was immediately among my favourite bass players.
One issue with drummers (in general, this is for all sexes) is, that they are mostly left in the dark, somewhere deep behind the rest of the band, both on stage as in interviews.
Lars is THE rule breaker in that part.
Thank GOD for that, I mean, think of Hetfield as the face of Slayer...
This, I think, also is part of this phenomena where males usually are more known.
I liked Wanda Day as well, as drummer.
Playing for Led Zeppel... no wait, what band was that? :P
EEEW, Jazz... I do not like it.
It's AWESOME music, seeing how many follow that style, but is just not my cuppa tea...
Beating John Bonham in Playboy...well... I mean... Playboy... Karen vs Bonham... who looks better?
JK there, rofl.
She truly deserved that title!!!
It doesn't get any better than this!
That is sooo cool. Can I get an autographed photo of the 3 of you?
I'm a young female drummer in a all girl band which are heavy metal thrash , screamo , rock , been playing since I got my first kit at 5 year's , love playing the drum's , thumb's up to female drummer's .!!!!!
Love it
Wow that's cool
Thank you !
There aren't enough of you. Keep it up and all the best.
Thanks.
Viola Smith just passed away at just short of her 108th Birthday. She was recognized as the first professional female drummer. She often was called the female "Gene Krupa". RIP Viola.
thanks for including Karen Carpenter she was a pioneer ... your words were kind
She had fantastic 'ears' when playing the kit...
When I was young I wanted to play drums. It was very much discouraged (even by the music teacher). "Girls don't play drums" So when I turned 50, I treated myself to drum lessons and 5 years later I'm still playing! It's something I enjoy and I don't plan on stopping. I have a daughter also and encouraged her to pursue what she wants. Never mind the naysayers! Thank you for your list!
Love this. Thats great to hear!
Yay!!!! :)
When I was teaching the best student I had was a girl and her mom made her quit.
@@drfiberglass That is so sad!
Oh... How abou Suzette then.
Watched a video of Karen Carpenter about a year ago. Blew me away. Always smiling throughout the performance. A joy to watch.
Karen was a unique human being too precious for this world.
Karen Carpenter is still a shining light. She never went out. ❤️
Karen Carpenter would have been delighted and amazed at the wonderful talent of drumming that these young women have achieved.
As a 52 year old woman who is finally realizing her dreams to play drums and write songs, I found this really inspiring. I will definitely check out the players you refer to. Also, you are a great story teller! I loved every minute of this!
I'm 45 and just learning to play too. Didn't realize I wanted to learn til a year ago. Now I just feel so powerful, and it's a fantastic outlet for strong emotion!
@@laughingl0tus . I am just learning how to play. I wanted to play since I was a little girl and seeing Sheila E play drums.
Follow your dreams!
All 3 of you learning are inspiring. I started when I was 13 then stopped more or less for a long time only playing intermittently, now starting back up at 37
Cheers sister! I started the drums at 52 as well. One of the best decision in my life 🤗
I am a woman drummer and people either encourage it 👍or some people say it's not very feminine👎 but I don't care I play because I love it and I play for my church and I've been in two bands Thanks for the video Stephen
I salute for going for your goal. keep hitting those drums!!😁💪
Screw the haters!!! Drum on!!!👍👍👍
Same☺️
Actually the men encourage female drummers even they actually ..sucks.. Only cause they likes to see a pair of boobs shaking while playng drums
Karen Carpenter started out as most great drummers do, playing Jazz, she was in the RC Trio with her brother and they won 2x in a row at the Hollywood Bowl, some of their tunes can be heard right on You Tube. Karen could not understand Bonham's indignance, she said" I don't know why he is coming down on me, we play Zep songs in the studio to jam too."
I know I’m years late to the party, but he was one of those men with a fragile ego. They can’t handle it when women can do anything as well or God forbid better than they do. Instead of encouraging, helping or being supportive, they felt/feel the need to say discouraging comments and basically let it be known they don’t think women make good drummers.
Karen is one of my favorite artists, period. Incredible voice and drumming chops. I wish she knew herself just how special and beautiful she was.
I’m 52 and just learning to play drums. I’ve had 2 online lessons with Alex Bent of Trivium and have a third lined up tomorrow. I’m also getting a lesson lined up with Samus who is a session player. I LOVE heavy metal!!!
Dude. Thank you for this video! There were some women in the video I’d never even heard of before, and getting to see some representation of other women doing what I love to do is so inspiring and motivating. Really awesome how you drew attention to the mental health and gender struggles faced by these women too. It really highlights how essential it is that people keep making videos like this. Drumming is definitely not just for the guys! :)
Couldn't agree more Sarah! Glad you dug!
So glad Karen is in this group. Saw them live many times and she was amazing. I played drums in high school due to her inspiration.
Ruth Underwood's playing from 1972 to 1977 with Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention was incredible. Any musician who played with Frank Zappa had to be top notch.
Couldnt agree more. Monster of a player
She was my nominee (I mentioned I had one in reply to another comment). Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks she's phenomenal. She played on The Black Page, a notoriously difficult drum/percussion solo. The drum solo was actually played by Terry Bozzio, but on Live in New York there's an “teenage New York, easy listening” version (Zappa's words in the introduction) in which she plays marimba. Not only does she have to deal with the insanely complicated poly and cross rhythms, but she has to play the melody too.
Yes I wanted to mention Ruth Underwood also. Then I remembered, … wait she plays Xylophone (well, it looks like Marimba is the accurate instrumental term) & Percussion. I remember an interview where she said she & Zappa had to have her marimbas fashioned with an output jack so it could be amplified on tour.
Awesome list! I’m sure there’ll be a 2nd part, because maaaan... Senri Kawaguchi, Sarah Thawer, Didi Negron... I’m pretty sure we all know of a drummer that’s been unjustly underrecognized...
Awesome video!
Wait...Kawaguchi isn't in there (haven't watched yet...). One of the best drummers on the planet, any genre, any gender? C'mon, man...
Hi.
Could I add two more to your list!
"Meytal Cohen" and "Emmanuelle Caplette"
Both can be found on the UA-cam's and are really talented artists
Both incredible. Had the opportunity to see Emmanuelle at a clinic a few years back. Her hands are incredbile
Both are amazing .
Stephen Taylor I saw her in clinic too. She played a Sonor Vintage Series kit. I swear, the combination of those drums and her hands created the absolute best live drum sound I’ve ever heard come off a stage. She’s amazing. And very cool, too.
And add Kalonica Nicx for the young category. She's a HLAG Champion
Emmanuelle definitely gets my vote. I do have another nominee, but I'll leave that for a comment on the video (rather than a reply)
Paulina Villarreal from the Rock band The Warning is no slouch. She's a gifted drummer, pianist, vocalist and song writer.
The Best!
Heck yeah Warning Army represent!
Thanks for the video, Stephen. This is very inspiring! I've started teaching my younger sister to play the drums. After a couple of lessons and videos shown, she did ask me why she hasn't seen many girl drummers around. Awkward silence ensued.
I messed up and didn't realise how important it was for her to see a woman killing it in the drums through her young perscpective, but I've decided to do my very best and make her feel represented in a more equal learning environment. Thanks again!
P.S. for latin/Brazilian drumming, check out Vera Figueiredo. Amazing artist, educator and samba drumming icon!
Great list! Honorable Mention. Alice de Buhr of the all female band Fanny from the early 70's. They got almost no recognition then, but they're all over UA-cam now, Check out the songs Blind Alley, Ain't That Peculiar, and Hey Bulldog to see her killing it.
Thanks for remeber that!
Awesome list. You hit the nails on the heads by including those who’ve worked beyond the drum kit.
One great feature is how these fabulous women have worked with other fabulous people!
As a musician, working with others and being on their short list of who to call is vital in this game.
All these girls fit that bill and continue to improve and inspire.
Great job, Sir!🤘🏻🤘🏻
This is fabulous. Thank you for shedding the spotlight on these amazingly talented and often under-recognized musicians. I have taken up percussion in my 50s and it is life-changing.
Stephen, this video is amazing. Such cool, passionate way of sharing great artists. I think I loved every single time you made one of these, but this one feels like a huge step towards new horizons.
Thank you SO Much for the recommendations of videos and albums on so many different genres!!
I wonder if you could start making interviews with people you cite in these lists, it would be truly groundbreaking!!!
I am going to make sure my daughter sees this list. She will LOVE it.
You should check out Pau, the drummer from The Warning rock band (It's a band formed by 3 sisters)
Watching you now and love how you are honoring and holding women! Thank you. Turning 70 this year and finally getting my own drum kit after a lifetime of wanting to play!!! Thank you for your inspiration!
You would be AMAZED at how many of my students are women and in your age bracket. Never too late!!!
@@StephenTaylorDrums thanks for your encouraging response!!!
Karen was my main reason for starting with the drums
Mine too! Definitely an inspiration. I've been at it for a couple of weeks. I feel like a dork, but then I keep reminding myself that Karen - and EVERY great drummer - was a newbie at one point, too! 😃
Great feature Stephen. Thanks for bringing awareness to some of these great drummers
I love your presenting style and the passion you pour into this. I'm planning a radio show for this Thursday night celebrating female drummers. I'll be sure to mention your UA-cam channel.
Another vote for Senri Kawagushi, astonishing player. Also a shout out for the british drummer Sarah Jones. Nothing flashy just effortlessly quality. Great live with Hot Chip and more recently with Harry Styles.
Keep the videos coming, cheers
Editing skills, props, research.. great work Stephen!!
Dude you never stop pumping quality content out, it's insane
Senri kawaguchi is a top top pro, and is still so young. And Yoyoka a 10 year old rock drummer that has more pocket and soul then most UA-cam drummers.
Hey Stephen! Love your videos, they give me a lot of inspiration.
This is awesome! Thank you for sharing this. I’m also amazed that you record with 3-4 different eye-catching backgrounds that shift multiple times in the same sentence. And your voice is super engaging!
Glad you enjoyed!
VERA Figueiredo. Last century, transcending any gender o geographical barrier, way before social media and internet, gaining recognition and spreading her ART, even getting her own Sabian line of cymbals and Effect (sheet) should have been on this one! awesome channel, subbed!
Stephen I love your drumming so much!! You have inspired me so much!! Thank you man!!
This is great! I knew most of these amazing drummers, rocked Evelyn Glennies Vic Firth sticks back in the 90s, Sheila E is a still a huge crush of mine (and she knows LOL) Teri Lynn used to just dominate back on Arsenio and is still a monster. I learned about all the others and now have some great albums to pick up, thanks Stephen!
Never knew Karen Carpenter was a drummer... how did I ever miss that? (Probably because I was only 8 at the time).
Easy to forget as that part of her career quickly got sidelined because of how phenomenal a singer she was as well
She was an incredible drummer. She described herself as "A drummer who sings".
@@dirtydave2691 Karen played great. Great chops very much like Buddy Rich type chops. I believe Hal Blaine discovered her and played on a lot of the Carpenter tunes.
@@thesimplyagapeproject6342 My brother and I used to just drool over all her Ludwig silver sparkle gear!
Love this Steven! Thanks and I’ll be posting this on the Drummergirls United site on FB. The girls will love it!!
Great video! 🥁🔥 👍🏻 Maybe number 11 could be Emmanuelle Caplette? 🤔🤷🏻♀️😃
She's so great! Saw a clinic by her a few years ago...her hands are insane!
And add Kalonica Nicx for the young or teenage category. She's a HLAG Champion
Steven, got to add Senri Kawaguchi - This clip is when she was 16 (In 16) . And a bunch of young ladies from over there popped up ua-cam.com/video/VisODUOCiUk-/v-deo.html- I see I wasn't the first to bring her up, and Meytal, Emanuele..
YES!!! I was going to say that..... I have recently discovered Senri.... She is AWESOME!!
Yes! Yes! Yes! She is absolutely amazing.
Came to the comments specifically to suggest Senri Kawaguchi. Maureen Tucker was an interesting choice. Velvet Underground was certainly a great band and very influential, but I don’t hear the same command over the drums in Maureen Tucker’s playing like I do in someone like Senri Kawaguchi. Chops isn’t everything but it should be taken into consideration.
She is top of my list on Female drummers.
And add Kalonica Nicx. She's a HLAG Champion
Very cool upload! I have three daughters and my youngest (almost 2 year old) love the drums....hoping she continues to pursue it when she is older :)
My niece was 9 when she started playing drums with the School of Rock, I quickly ensued after that at 55..... waited too long for that.... but Kudos to all the female drummers out there. I have been in the School of Rock myself, did a weekend jam session at Girls Rock Greater Boston where we wrote lyrics, music, made shirts, called our band Just Boots and performed. At my first lesson I didn't know how to hold the sticks, 10 years later I've been in 3 bands and still rockin! Doesn't matter who you are just get out there and play! Thank you Steven for putting this out there. Have been a fan of yours for a while!
I am truly amazed with all the percussionists in this video, but Glennie's got me speechless, really. Beyond words. Thanks for sharing, and so much time and effort!
God bless you
As a guy, one of my formative "someday I'm going to be a drummer" moments was watching Barbara Crawford from the prog band Now (The USA, not Belgium Now) play in our dining room at a co-op house party. This was in the 80's. I was freakin blown away.
Brilliant video Stephen, glad these drummers are getting the shout-outs they definitely deserve!
Thanks Jimmy
Great video, will be sharing and checking out those links! Thank you !
THAT WAS AWESOME!!! I WIIL be watching that video with my seven-year-old daughter at some point in the next 2 days. Thank you for that video!
So good that you did this - great job 👍
As a little boy , not only did I have a crush on Karen, but she could hold her own on a drum set. Respect
Senri Kawaguchi blown my mind, check it out.
Cindy Blackman and Teri Lynne are 2 of my favorite drummers...Karen Carpenter is a direct link to my drumming career start...When she first went to the front of the stage, my first teacher,James Anthony, was called by Richard,a childhood friend, to drum..I got Jimmy's full time gig as a result, and my career began....Great video.
Thanks Stephen!!! This girl/woman drummer loves this...I always enjoy your videos but this is my favorite!!!

Hi I’m First
@@joshuaantunez9470 What up Mariano!
Stephen Taylor Hi
Thanks for the video. The funny thing is that I can't ever imagine that phrase going "...all about giving boy drummers the spotlight.". Not focusing on gender, but the word used. food for thought ^^
please don't steal my cymbals I only have three b 8's and a zbt
Stephen Taylor - I ❤️ you, great video. Thanks for the support, you're a legend!
That was an incredible and empowering list, sir!
I have to say this is pretty much a video that needed to be made imo
One of those being Shelia E who really was my first female drummer I discovered and really introduced me to funk drumming
More female drummers need recognition in the community thanks for the inspiration
Thank you for this video so much!
Love this list! Been teaching my daughter to play for about a year now.
Fascinating video Stephen. Ta!
Excellent video Stephen. I'm a male but I'd love to see more women drummers. The vibe and fun Sarah Thawer and Senri Kawaguchi have in their 'drum-off' video just warms my heart a ton. BTW, there's a lot of Senri mentions in the comments, and rightfully so. I consider her to be one of the best drummers around, period. Maybe you should do a 10 MORE women drummers video.
Anika is the best!!!🔥
She's phenomenal
I had the pleasure of seeing her live at one of her masterclasses. She's so fluid and makes drumming look so effortless. Truly a master
Stephen, thank you for this very important video recognizing these amazingly talented and ground-breaking women. And for emphasizing the message about Karen Carpenter's body dysmorphia around trying to retain her place as a musician by having what was considered the "right look." I was heartbroken when she passed and also shocked, because we were about the same age. Something extremely important about her passing was the wake-up call it gave me, and hopefully other women. For that, I am forever grateful to her because, as a former dancer, I was also bulimic. It was a very common practice in the dance world in order to remain at an impossibly unrealistic weight. When Karen Carpenter died it was a wake-up call for me to seek counseling in order to stop doing that self-destructive practice.
The nth power is truly amazing thank you so much for this introduction!
Well, I can help with exposure! This has just been added to my new Drummers Worldwide playlist. Merry Christmas!
Thank you for this great video, Stephen ! :D As a drumming lady, I appreciate it very much :D Bless you and your family :D
Thank you Debra!
Saw Anika in November and hadn't heard anything from her before. . . that clinic was so cool!
What a great list. I love Anika's proggy music as much as her crazy quintuplets. I love watching Sheila e, her pocket is amazing and she oozes style, charisma and experience in her playing and I can never get enough of Karen Carpenter.
My favorites are Arika Casebolt of Circus Lupus/Antimony and Sara Lund of Unwound. Great video Stephen!
This is awesome! and much deserved
Nice tribute! We have a great female drummer at my church in LA, and she always captivates me.
I was fortunate enough to attend Anika Nilles in store clinic at Guitar Center (Dallas). One of my all time favorite drummers.
You're a good man Stephen. Thanks for bringing attention to historically underrepresented or ignored folks.
I am pleased you recognized the contribution of women who use percussion to make an impact. Who's missing from this list is Senri Kawaguchi, Sarah Tomek, and Haruna.
Im a mama drummer, played drums the first time in my 50s and am loving it! Music is open to everyone.
Thanks! I don't know if I ever would have started playing the drums if it hadn't been for seeing Sylvia Cuenca at the Ballard Jazz Festival in Seattle.
You should check out the drummer for Band Maid. She's really amazing!
Akane is definitely one of my favourite drummers totally awesome.
Maybe you should leave him a link to check out who Band-Maid are. ua-cam.com/video/9TkHpvaO09c/v-deo.html
This was freaking awesome, thanks for giving women drummers the respect they deserve! :-)
Karen Cerpenter.... and my favorite: Great Hilary Jones... Best fusion drummer all the times
Bravo! Great video... still love the t-shirt!
Eye opener thank you Stephen.
Thank you so much for making this video! I would like to start drumming, but I have always noticed how the music world is largely male-dominated, particularly in terms of percussion. This video made me tear up happy tears and feel proud :)
R.I.P. Viola Smith, who died today at age 107(!!!!)
I’m glad to say I knew majority of these great drummers except for 3. As a fan of Prince, Sheila E has been on my radar for decades
Anika Nilles I remember seeing on UA-cam about 6 years ago with her song “Wild Boy” and I’ve been keeping up with her ever since
Cindy Blackman I knew for years since her time with Lenny Kravitz.
Karen Carpenter still makes my jaw drop with her drumming skills and I feel she really started to struggle with her self esteem once she left her comfort zone of the kit, it seemed like she didn’t want to be out front but behind her kit
Viola Smith I learned about a few years ago and the only video of she playing I watch a lot.
Terri and Nikki I know but not as well as the others but Evelyn, Moe, and Jody I haven’t had the chance to listen to but thanks for sharing them with me, I’ll check them out
I thought it was cool that me and Karen both played Ludwigs. Great video giving the ladies their props!
Great video!! And an inspiration for women drummers! I'm the first female percussionist to receive my diploma in Geneva Conservatoire 25 years ago. It has been a difficult journey with a very over dominated masculine percussion world and I've been through a lot of sexism. Keiko Abe : first female percussionist in Japan that inspired and taught a whole generation of percussionists. Ruth Underwood played for Frank Zappa.
I have to say, I'm always skeptical when I see lists like this, but thank you so so so much for such a fantastic, complete and thought out list. So many of these "female drummer" lists are just...offensive, to be quite honest. But you nailed, and I even learned a few things!
Thanks Patrick!
I have to say Stephen, Sheila E won me over as a female drummer after I seen a solo clip her playing the DW double bass pedals in high heels. It gave a whole new meaning to the (high) heel toe method.
Interesting fact...she was semi-paralyzed for a while due to extended years of playing in high heels. I believe that was around the time that her "Sex Cymbal" album dropped...which REALLY affected how well it did on the charts.
@@StephenTaylorDrums wow, I had no Idea of that. It just goes to show the importance of using proper techniques of playing drums.
I saw her with Prince on the Lovesexy tour. She was amazing. During her drum solo her kit rotated through 360° vertically! How she managed to play upside down is beyond me, because she didn't miss a beat. Just think about it, gravity will be working completely in the opposite direction.
Tied for #1 Karen Carpenter and Akane of Bandmaid. Jimmy Page saw the reincarnation of John Bonham in Akane
a pretty good list, as the top among women. i want to ask a question about your opinion on the modern drummer article you mentioned. would any of the ladies of your video be better than the least of the men in the modern drummer list? i haven't read it (it's behind a paywall) so i don't know who's on it. also i want to say that those articles, just the ones rolling stone put's out about guitarists, rock singers, etc. are really only good for one thing: starting arguments on the internet. there's always people who are ranked way better than they actually are, because they were commercially successful. there's always insanely talented people who rank low on the list or not at all because the person who wrote the article doesn't listen to their music much, or doesn't like them. also, there are lots of unknown players (any instrument you care to choose) that are just as good as many of the people, man or woman, who would end up on lists in a magazine. there's usually an 8 year old japanese girl here on youtube, who can smoke 98% of the rest of us on our best day. and do it smiling, with all the charm that comes from being a little kid. either way, i have long admired may of the players on your list, and i'm not even a drummer. your list was a good one, i enjoyed watching.
Great list! I would like to add Senri Kawaguci, Kanade Sato, and Yoyoka Soma to this list.
Good on you Stephen, its great to recognise the women who play and play good!
Thanks Stephen!
Karen Carpenter (RIP) was a G. ❤️ 🥁
When you're so early that it says no views but 8 likes
Cam'ron comin' in like a boss! What up brotha
Your video and channel all together is awesome and informative, keep it up man
Fantastic list of great female drummers!
How would you feel about doing a similar listing on left-handed drummers?
I'm a lefty myself (both left-handed on hi-hats and left-footed on bass drum) and would love to know about professional players who function like me. Phil Collins and Ian Paice are the clear starting points, but there are quite a few others that would make up an interesting list.
Very cool. I performed with Sheila and Tito is a small club is SFO. (I was doing live lighting and laser effects). Both amazing artists.
